Jim Croce was in the military when this song came to him...standing in line with his fellow military personnel all waiting their turn to call home...and he would hear a lot of Dear John stories being played out... What makes this song so interesting to me is that in the early 70s I was a long distance operator...working the night shift...when all the Mars calls came in..military calling home from all over...I loved that job...working the switchboard...one ringy dingy...
