The greatest nation in the world is 139 this year on July 1st.   :hi5:

Being a nation of immigrants makes ours a truly unique society.  We enjoy freedom and a strong sense of nation while allowing many cultures to make up the mosaic that is Canada.  Welcoming new people from all over the world makes our social fabric infinitely diverse. :handshake:

Our founding cultures are a mix of English, French and Aboringinal.  Being officially bilingual (French and English) strengths our national character.

I wish all our American friends a happy 4th of July.  As mighty as the US is I think there are lessons that could be learned from the Canadian experience.  Canada to the US is its largest trading partner and biggest oil supplier.  We are staunch allies of the US when the cause is just.

My fondest hope is that this relationship lasts for another 100 years. :oh yeah:

Just came back from the free Stampder's concert.  Yep Crystal, we made Maritimers of them.  This is, I believe, at least the fouth year they've played here on Canada Day.  They declared themselves the house band.

Timberlea... did you watch fireworks in halifax?

I used to go when i was a kid, and watched them from a coast guard ship.

We just got back from the fireworks, with Sky... they were kinda sucky... THEN, we realized that we had parked under a light.

Oh crap. Shadflies. (Mayflies)... crazy little buggers.. walk with your mouth CLOSED. Gagggg.

(Taken from a website---- The unmistakable sound of crunching shadflies signifies the beginning of summer as the insects are too numerous to dodge while going about business on city sidewalks. A leisurely bicycle ride on a warm evening during shadfly season becomes an exercise in breathing with one's mouth closed to avoid an unwanted insect meal. Roadways become hazardous as crawling masses of these night-flyers congregate underneath the brightest street lights forming a slippery film between tire and asphalt. The end of the 2-3 week shadfly emergence is found to be the most obnoxious. Insects which have been swept into heaps by city shopkeepers foul the city air as peak summer temperatures speed up the decomposition process. The lakes appeal is lost to prospective swimmers looking for relief from the heat as they are faced with the stench of shadfly corpses littering the shore. The saving grace of this winged storm is the lack of biting or sucking mouthparts. Unlike the itch inspiring mosquito and black-fly, the shadfly is only a menace to man because of its emergence in astronomical numbers. )

More info at www.shadfly.com

Basically.. .there are HEAPS of corpses EVERYWHERE... if you stop at a red light, and look at the car next to you, you can't see the car... just shadflies:) Lol, it is absolutely disgusting, and they have the fireworks display at the waterfront, under hundreds of lights.... ick ick ick.

So.. basically, if you can ignore THOSE little suckers.. it isn't so bad:) (Btw, those pics? That wall is COVERED... and pretty much EVERy wall is.  If you are driving, it feels like it is raining shadflies, you actually need your wipers on. gag.

Lol, it is only because of the lake here.. .They happen in other places too.. but apparently North bay is one of the worst, because of the size of Lake Nippissing....

But seriously.. ya get used them.. and we don't live in town, so we only get a few random bugs here on the hill.... but in town? There are HEAPS on the sidewalks and roads:)

Well, OK, I'll just take along earplugs in case the crunching sound gets too loud.

as for the "shadflies" down here they're called mayflies and they are TREMENDOUS fish bait, but yes, they do tend to make a mess!

Damn I missed in on the first but Happy Birthday to Canada anyway.  It's the home of one of my musical heroes, Gordon Lightfoot.

It's also mentioned in one of my favorite saying: "Drink Canada Dry!".  I tried it once but they just kept on making more.
