Gilly - length of time plays a big part in it too. I started smoking in my mid-teens and kept it up through my 20's and into my 30's. It wasn't till I hit the low 30's that I really started having trouble with the coughing and the voice. I quit 12 years ago and am trying to get back as much as I can with my range etc., but the damage was done. Also smoke does stick to your clothes - you may not notice it, but being an ex-smoker I sure do...even in that residual form its not a good thing. When my friends are at my house and go outside to smoke, then come back in, it about knocks me over. When I smoked, of course, I never noticed.

Just my  :2cents:

I really need to quit smoking. My wife just noticed that the cat weezes when he breathes. That is so my fault.

I think the dog might have the same problem.

Hi Drea.

 Hi Chuck...yeah it can affect pets too - my dog had a nasty cough when we were smoking in the house...it went away after I quit though and wouldn't allow smoking inside.

Ooooh, i notice the smell... But, i am a nut about it. When I come in, I wash my hands, face, brush my teeth, eat a mint, and put on spray stuff:) And, i STILL notice it.

When i was really young, my friends parents used to (@$%&#!) and complain when I came to their house, because I always reeked of my parents cig smoke. It was really embarrasing, to be asked to leave my coat OUTSIDE.

My folks are pretty tolerent of the smell I bring in with me. My dad quit years ago and would love more than for me to quit. He never gives me a hard time but I know he can smell me from a mile away.

The cough doesn't help much either.

Last time I quit (oooh, that sounds awful!) I got all of my high notes back. That is a reason to quit right there. But...I lost some of my lower notes. Unfair! Unfair!

I have never smoked a singer and I don't plan on starting now. There might even be laws to discourage such things.

I always bring a water bong with me to karaoke. I just look so cool with my drink in one hand and my water bong in the other. Of course this forces me to use the mike stand and in between singing I like to take a hit off the bong, which I know is way cool. I think it actually helps my singing voice.

When I was a kid, I would get sick just looking out the window.   My dad smoked.  After I moved out of the house my illness rate dropped in half.   I attribute my high sickness rate to his secondhand smoke.    His heart attack at 53 losing the back half of his heart, was smoking related.   Shortly, all smoking in public will be totally banned.       A great day for everyone.

Wow, thanks for speaking for me as well. :) I don't recall ever exhaling anywhere near a non-smoker including you.

As long as I have been smoking I have gone to great lengths to keep my addiction away from people who never started or who have already quit. It's my own problem and I will keep trying to quit until it works.

What is with all this "shortly smoking will be banned in public places".... what are the laws like around where you all live?

In all the places I have lived, it has been banned since I was much younger.... on my drive back and forth to NS, the only place you can smoke anywhere is Quebec really....

It was much stricter in NS, than here, but you STILL can't smoke near buildings, or in them, etc etc etc.

Besides, I hate walking with my daughter through a group of kids standing in front of the doors to a store smoking. That is WHY there are bans against that.

Anyways... a smoking section in a restaurant is like having a peeing section in a pool. Just doesn't work like that.

We can still smoke in the bars and restaurants in the Chicago suburbs, but not in the city. Most businesses are smoke free. All the fast food places are no smoking now.

Maybe I misunderstood the post. I thought he meant all outdoor public places as well like Scotland.

I don't smoke where people are forced to breath my smoke. Anyway, I hope to be smoke free soon and then I hope to be able to put all of this behind me.

I will be quitting cigarettes tomorrow. If I do post anything I will check to make sure I am not irritable first. :)

Good luck to you!  I'll be thinking positive thoughts.
