I was just looking for singing pointers...really  :reddevil:

Being a beginner and all I was curious...how does everyone control their voice so that you don't get louder on the higher notes?  Or even on the chorus...I notice myself doing that a lot too.  It sure would save me a lot of mixing time if I could keep my vocals pretty even.  I hate looking at my vocal wav file and seeing HUGE spots and itty bitty spots....geeze I hate mixing...hehehe

Any tips or suggestions are appreciated!    :D

When singing at home, I just pull the mic back a bit. It helps if you can see your audio levels when you are singing.

Of course, pulling back from the mic helps a bit, but one technique (this is called "imaging" in singing) I learned from my voice teacher is when you get to that point where you're going for the high notes, picture yourself skiing downhill.  Another thing she taught me along this line (and I really should practice this more) is when that high note(s) come, when you get to that point, raise your hand in the air and as you sing them slowly bring it down.  It's amazing how much this imagery relaxes  your voice so you're not forcing too much airflow and producing an extremely loud high pitch. I agree with you, it is very tough to manage that problem and I suppose like everything practice makes perfect!   Take care, Michael

Michael those are some great tips! Also a good way to cheat a little (if you are using Cool Edit or Audobe Audition)... take your vocal track and go to: "Amplify" then "Dynamic Processing" and slap a "fast attack" on it. It evens it all out. It's not the best thing to do because you do lose a little quality but it does work great. I use it alot!

You will probably find as you do more recording, pulling back and watching the level meters will be your best bet. It's the best way for sound control as it gives the best impression of how the notes should sound. In the studio, we try to use electronic vocal control as little as possable as it degrades the sound. It also makes it easier for a live sound mixer to mix your live sound, when you do this all the time. Good luck and happy recording..

I do pull back from the mic when I'm singing on my karaoke machine...but when I record the only mic I can use is my headset mic...so I can't pull back

My regular mic won't work on my computer...I don't know why but when I try it, it barely picks up my voice.  Not sure if it's a soundcard problem or what  :banghead:

I sure wish I COULD use my regular mic...it would be a lot more comfortable for me to sing into.  And I would have a lot less breathing noises to silence out when I'm mixing

I'm just glad this wasn't a thread about products to enhance anything.

I personally have never had a voice lesson or anything like it. Over time though, I learned to control my voice better. Also, when recording, a good mic helps. I got one for my birthday that cost like $35 dollars and I find my waveforms are way more even now, because I can be further from the mic when I sing. I found that pulling away from the mic when recording comprimises the quality of sound on the choruses etc. When I recorded house of the rising sun I tried that method and I discovered that the loud parts sounded thinner. My advice is practice songs you notice yourself varying in volume with, after time you will learn to self correct. Practice really does make perfect.

EDIT: BTW this is fierynette... I think I got bitten by one of those flying grasshoppers Chuck was talking about... this was still signed into my boyfriend's account .

SSome people use a compressor and a limitor to produce a more moderate recording but, as was mentioned earlier in this thread, it may also compromise the quality of your voice.

Also, singing with the mic off axis might not sound as god as just using a better mic or imaging or more practice.

I was told that size didn't matter. I never believed it though.

Besides my hat size is 7 3/8. That was when mt ego was at its largest. I'm close to average so I've got nothing to worry about, I think...
