We went out last night to support one of our favorite karaoke jocks. We are local jock supporters.
We will be going out tonight to help out another.
These guys just got these gigs recently and need some crowds to show up in support. We also liked the lack of singers at the clubs.
Last night was a lot of fun. Out of about 12 singers there were only 2 that never KJed. We had plenty to talk about. I got a promise from a buddy of mine that he would give me a used compressor if it still works. He also offered to help me learn the business.
No real question here. Just wanted to mention going out and doing fun stuff.

It's probably easier, not to mention far more pleasant, to be a local jock supporter than an athletic supporter. Just my opinion based on my years as a high school jock and my memories of the locker room.

I was a jock in school, we made all sorts of comments about the different types of support that could be or should be obtainable.
The memories....

Going to a slow show helps everyone involved. The only one who lost in our case was my beautiful dog who loves to spend every waking second with her momma (GiGi).

....that's the catch 22 about the KJ biz!!
When we get REAL popular and tons of peeps start coming out to our shows, we LOSE a good number of our regulars, who would be the only ones in the bar singing if they had their way. So then the bar gets less crowded and less popular without the regulars and their friends around. THEN, once attendence is down, you get NEW regulars and their friends who come because they get to sing over and over. Then the bar starts to get popular again and those regulars leave. And so on and so forth.....
Can't take it personal, that is just the way it works!!

Sounds like you had a great time! We always support our favorite KJ, especially when she has a new gig. We also make sure to support her substitute when she can't be there. She's a great KJ, but she like to sing (and shouldn't), so if there's enough of us singers, she won't sing anything-which keeps the local stray dogs happy.

Hey HHIsland girl!! I'll be down there in Hilton Head July 2-4 (Sunday-Tuesday, which I know are weird nights for karaoke).
Where's a good place to go karaoke?? My parents own a place in Palmetto Dunes and I come up there all the time (I get the place 3 weeks a year) but can't say I've ever sung anywhere. I'm pretty familiar with the island, so specific locales would be great!!
Doesn't Wild Wing on Pope do a karaoke night?? I've been there for trivia a few times but can't remember if they had a karaoke night or not..

I love to hear when KJs support other KJs. I had a couple KJs go to my show last
night. Great guys! I wish I had more time to visit their shows because I appreciate when they come to see me.
Hugs Marty and 8-ball

We used to go a place that had the customers packed in every weekend night. It was hard to get a seat on weeknights too after 9:00 PM and they started the show at 8:00. They had to pump singers through so we could all get to sing about twice in three hour period. We still loved that place. They never made us feel rushed. The jock had a pretty good system for getting a lot of songs in an hour.
That was about 12 years ago.

It's good to support your local KJ's sometimes an occasional visit will prompt one by them. It's just good business. There will be a time where they will overbook or cant do a show and will turn you on to it etc.
The more shows you go to you pick up different KJ styles and take some of what they do and make it fit your style as well.

Last night the show was pretty good but the vocals were hard to hear from the stage above the music. The two most liked and most fun KJs were sitting at my table with me. They were not working. One of them doesn't even do that anymore. It could have been a lot of fun if hey had hosted for a little bit.
I don't mean to be negative toward the guy that was working, he's a friend of mine too. He does a very good job and runs a clean and fun show.

This should go without saying ....but I would not offer any advice in this area to the KJ in question....unless of course they ask and then be very careful how you word it.
Sometimes it is not the KJ with regards to weak vocals. I have some singers that no matter what you do to the gain setting. They simply have no volume coming out of their mouths. It's very frustrating when they comment that the cannot hear themselves and you have them cranked up to the point of feedback. They honestly do not understand that the problem is not you or your sound system...it's their lack of vocal projection.
You will also get those singers who do not want to be heard. They back the mic away when you give them the right mix...so you turn it up more...then they back it further away. After the song is over they complain that the cannot hear themselves.
So it's not always the KJ's fault for Mic/Music volume problems. But many times it is.

So it's not always the KJ's fault for Mic/Music volume problems. But many times it is. Last night it was neither but it did seem to be a technical issue. Sometimes tunes are meant to be done very softly too or at least just some parts of them. That might be a matter of opinion and mine may differ from the KJ.
I was at a club once that used a limitor and a compressor on their vocals. I sounded really good and could even hear the subtlest parts of my voice. I actually have control over these parts of my voice when I can hear them. That is the kind of sound I want to recreate. I will see if they still do things the same way, if they do I should try to get a job there and learn how they do it.
Thanks folks, I think I found what I was looking for. You people are very helpful and all of the free information might have saved me years of trial and error type learning.
You people rock!
