Second hand smoke has been discovered to be as bad or worse than smoking, according to very recent reports. Let's just assume, it is as bad (equal). Now I spend an average of 5.5 - 6 hours in smoke filled bars, 5 nights a week. That's 30 hours aweek. Now if it takes 10 minutes to smoke a cigarette, that's 120 minutes per pack. Let's also assume that 30 hours of second hand smoke is equal to smoking 1 pack per day. It is probably a lot more. So I'm smoking 5 packs per week, at least. Now if you actually smoke, then you need to add at least some extra packs depending upon the hours you are exposed to the second hand smoke. If you are on a stage or elevated platform you are getting a little more concentration, because the smoke rises and gets thicker toward the ceiling. The faster they can ban smoking in public places, the better off we will all be health wise. The day they do that, I'll quit smoking 5 packs a week or more.

i lost a lot of power and my high notes. i have a pretty decent range--or used to. let's just say heart's magic man ain't gonna happen anytime soon.
the wrost part about quitting smoking, aside from the phsycial withdrawal, was the feeling that i needed to be doing something with my hands. i shredded a lot of cocktail napkins when we were out singing. and i gained a lot of weight, too. yuck!
i promised chuck i would quit again when he did. it was weirdly easy when i quit before (8 years ago with an occasional backslide of a day or two). i figure not only will it be it good for me, but will make it easier for him too. we will wake up one morning and be in a smoke-free house (after i dry clean the draperies). it will happen. i think i am ready. i think chuck is very nearly ready, too. I wish sometimes I could recreate the submarine world whenever I want to stop smoking......imagine getting extended on patrol for a month or more and the whole crew runs out of smokes!....and no one has had a smoke in 3-4 weeks by the time you tie up!....and you are clammed up inside a big steel pipe with no way out and 1000 miles from a store!......Then imagine a bunch of smoke free sailors layin on a beautiful tropical beach and one guy shows up with a fresh pack of cigs and lights one up......AAAAARRRRRGGGGGHHHH!...In two minutes we were all hooked again!
I had given up trying to give up smoking. I was in that isolated situation; alone in the forest for 3 weeks without cig, cos I forgot to pack it up. I end up smoking my tea and rolling it with wild banana leafs.

I know a huge amount of great singers that smoke as well. I smoke, and I know I could regain a lot of my higher register again if I quit. (Or I should say WHEN I quit). But yeah, it's disgusting and aggravating to know so many good singer/smokers, isn't it?

Some years ago I read in "Reader's Digest" that if you drink one ounce of wine every day you prolong your life on average of two days. Later, on some TV show, they told me that for every cigarette you smoke, you lose a day of your life.
So, I figured if I just sat around all day drinking and smoking I'd live forever.
This makes sense if you don't scrutinize it too closely.

Growing up, I wanted SO bad to have a bit of a rasp to my voice, I thought I sounded too girly and clear. (and, young, I thought I sounded like a little kid too much)
But I had a friend who was in high school, and she sang, and her dad used to sing but never did anymore because smoking had ruined it for him. So, I smoked about my first 2 weeks in High school in Cali, then said forget it. I didn't want a rasp bad enough to smoke and have to think maybe someday I wouldn't be able to sing anymore. So, you know, being a redneck and all, I just picked up chewing tobacco like my brothers did. LOL
Now, years later, I have this stupid problem with acid reflux, which comes and goes depending on life's situations at any given moment, and wether or not I have Prevacid to take. (it was going away, now it's coming back.... :( ) And, I've had a raspy sound since about October or November of last year. (doc said it's from acid burning my throat) And I HATE it, I just want my old voice back. I can't even falsetto anymore, I get dead air if I try. Careful what ya wish for....

It was on tonights news that the Surgeon General or some body has agreed that second hand smoke is bad for everyone. It won't be long before it will be banned in all public places. It's coming I just don't know how fast they will act on it.

Sometimes I feel like a lepper when I smoke. The only place I feel comfortable
smoking anymore is my house, car or the bar. And from what I hear they'll be next.
I never thought the day would come when you couldn't smoke in a bar or talk on a cell phone in your car. Boy was I wrong.

Even though I am trying to quit smoking, I don't think I would ever tell anyone that they should. I have my reasons for quitting and they only apply to me.

Quitting smoking is the hardest thing I ever had to do but the rewards for having quit make the struggle of quitting worth it.
I don't know. I always sort of liked that heavy smoker/gurgling style of karaoke. It's like watching Joe Cocker sway his head back and forth. It just has a magic effect on me I guess. Nothing brings a tear to my eye quicker and forces me out of my chair to clap my hands until they hurt faster than a Billy Joel song complete with phlem. Plus I've never admitted this before but I love the smell of someone's last cigarette on their breath. I always hold in that contact breath for as long as I can. I think I might have a 10 year addiction to other people's gurgling and mucus smoking karaoke effects. (My name is Jeff....and....I am...a tainted karake addict .) and in the words of Michael Keaton, "Thanks for not smoking."

Welcome to the People's Republic of California. They've banned smoking in bars for probably at least 5 years now (maybe 7 or 8), it was weird coming home from the bar and not stinking like an ashtray.
I don't have a problem if people smoke in bars, as long as the facility has good ventilation, so us non-smokers don't have to breathe it.
It's strange traveling to other states like Nevada where you can still smoke in public places like restaurants and bars.
Regarding cell phones, the State of CA legislature recently passed a bill to ban cell phones in cars, unless you're using a hands free device. This is supposed to take effect by 2008. Hopefully I'll be out of this state by then.

Hopefully I'll be out of this state by then. Many studies are being done to determine the safety of cell phones while driving including hands-free units. The results so far are compairing the effect to being legally intoxicated. I have yet to find a reputable source worth mentioning. If that does happen, cellphones will most likely be illegal for use in most states in a very short time.
Smoking is already banned in bars in some cities here. Not a problem for me, I just go outside with the DJs and KJs.

My father smokes and can sing like nobody's business, but I have noticed over the last few years his voice is not what it used to be. I can not directly attribute this to the cigarettes but I am sure it doesn't help. He has a lot of natural singing talent and that is fading faster than it should due to his smoking. A raspy voice may be a cool thing to have, but to keep the power and range of your voice would be much better in my opinion. To anyone who has managed to quit smoking, I applaud you and anyone still trying don't give up. The body is amazing at healing itself. Many of the negative effects of smoking fade after you stop. So keep trying in the end it will be worth it. I am lucky and glad that i never started. I was tempted to as a teen to try to fit in and be "cool".

I smoke... and sing.. (if you can call it singing:) And i don't think I have a raspy voice.. Hell, I have recordings of me, singing and playing guiitar when I was around 10-13, and I pretty much sound EXACTLY the same, as I did then.. just older. Maybe I just haven't smoked long enough to notice.
Well, I started when i was around 11-12. However old you are in Grade 6. Quit when I was 18 (found out I was pregnant) (I am 24 now) and didn't start again until last year, when Justy was on training... figured I would quit when he came home.. but it turned out HE had started back up again... here it is the NEXT summer, and he is away on training again, and we are both still smoking.
However, My daughter doesn't know we smoke (I sneak outside, when she is busy... she honestly has no clue)... I have little respect for people smoking around their kids.... you see like, a mother, with a van full of kids, the windows rolled up, and she is smoking... I just think it is wrong, and bordering on child abuse. I know, because MY parents did it to us..... esp. since it has been proven that second hand smoke kills... I also think that butts in my yard are disgusting, and am CONstantly forced to pick up my neighbors, off MY front yard, and deposit them in neat piles on her doorstep.
I guess I am a snobby smoker.... I still lecture to my daughter how it kills, and is a disgusting habit, yet, i do it behind her back.... I am trying to quit... again.. but it is hard this time around. When I was younger, I just quit cold turkey, because I found out I was pregnant.. (hell, my mother smoked when she was pregnant with me... even went outside at the hospital while in labor to have one:)
Anyways, I never REALLY found it bothered my voice.. and as for lung capacity.. I smoked 2 packs a day in junior high and high school, and played the tuba euphonium, french horn, and trombone (taught brass clinics, and played in the national band). My friend was in honors bio, and did a lung study on the smokers in our band program for a project..... Couldn't find a difference between us, and the others. (Lol, i also smoked much harsher stuff:) Mind you, there weren't many smokers within the band geeks:)
Babblinggggg.
