I don't try to offend anyone, my opinion is just that... Might even in some cases not be taking various things into consideration. Too much I don't know enough about anyway.. I'm open to thought evoking ideas that are different... I stay out've all debates online involving death penalty, abortion, most political stuff (although I cheat like I did here.. ), women's rights, or just in general stuff I have no knowledge of...and debates that are purely emotionally based...Existence of God can get REALLY ugly.... I don't debate that or approach that in this type room... We touched on it around christmas, and it stayed surprisingly tame, but that is best reserved for moderated topic forums.. IMO... Usually anything too passionate get's into flame wars... Very few have the ability to handle debate venue in real, let alone in the comfort of their living room with such anonymity... Too much like roadrage. Btw, most do have strong feelings about this type issue.. My own feeling is that hearing opposing viewpoints that are well thought out can only enforce my conviction, or sometimes change my perspective... I learn ALOT from exchanges on the internet.. MANY are much much smarter too... I never lose site of that..

I hope someone who disagrees with the original post will not be intimidated to enter this thread.
I really want to read their views. Really. Please.
If the bars were left alone to decide if smoking is to be allowed in their establishments, I think it would be great for marketing. Maybe some of the best karaoke venues will be in places that allow smoking. My dad who quit years ago, will go to these venues sometimes to have fun for a change of pace.
Where is the respect that allows us to make our own choices and be responsible for the results on our own. The insurance companies could make a killing if this was a seperate or add-on policy. ie. I wish to take a risk that is not covered in my current policy, adjust the policy, pay a higher premium. This is my choice to bring in new business, let me pay the damages if I screw it up. Let the insurance be lower for those who prefer not to be so bold.
I don't see a problem.

I don't have a problem with obesity in general. I am on the thin side and I have stugled all of my life to gain weightso it is the same for me. I eat like crazy and the pounds just won't stay with me.
It sux to go through your life with people accusing you of being bulemic or anorexic.
Just as have have problems gaining weight I know that there are many people that have the same issue losing weight. I feel like we are actually on the same team.
The thing that bothers me is when I fly...It never fails that if a flight is packed they seat me between to very large people. They usually put the arm rest up and they are in my seat too with their bodies rubbing on me. That is just gross. I don't want a small person that close to me either....

First off, being around a smoker up close for two hours is equivalent to you yourself inhaling four cigarettes's worth of smoke. This is not my idea of a pleasant, healthy experience. But shouldn't I have the right to spend time in the same place as a smoker without the health risks from his smoke? Is that really asking too much?
If I had a bad cold, would you want me to just cough and sneeze all over you risking your health? I kind of doubt it.
If bars do not want to be forced to establish no smoking rules, then they MUST setup and maintain an adequate air cleaning/purification system. IMO

We all need a certain amount of "personal space". Under different conditions, how much we need varies. When others invade our "personal space", we get uncomfortable.

I think this is a major public health issue. Bars should have to choose between either no smoking allowed or maintaing the best dang air cleaning system around. The latter would allow smokers and non-smokers to coexist with a lot less damage to the non-smoker. I think this is the right of the non-smoker.

The food issues are a whole different ball game as far as I'm concerned. Nobody is forcing anybody to eat unhealthy foods. There is way too many harmful food additives and processed foods out there, but nobody's making you eat them.

Buying foods at the grocery store is a bear too because they are allowed to call these additives "Natural Flavors". Almost everything in the grocery store has this on the label.
What sent me to the hospital was brushing my teeth with regular toothpaste and then using mouthwash. Th I.V. at the hospital also had this stuff in it because it is considered safe to use. I went into convulsions because it was being put into my vein as a way to help me. It was ironic and I laughed, a couple of days later.
Believe it or not.

Agreed, but at the same bar that ban's smoking, oftentimes others are in fact coughing and sneezing all over, others handle germ-filled money, serve drinks, and share microphones. No law's against it. Bartender's serve a substance that often creates aggressive behaviour in certain individuals, making it risky for certain females as well, no law against that.. Are open ceiling's the only way to make air safe in certain bars ? The current laws don't allow for options in terms of air filtration systems that might clean the air enough to minimize risk... As I see it, just living in certain cities is comparable to inhaling several ciggies.. People are exposed to that..
JMO
Yet I agree, nobody should willingly be put at risk.. Yet my own feeling is when a woman decides to go to, be in, or leave a bar, she is putting herself at risk. Sending her outside to smoke can be risky too.. My own feelings are that "A bar" isn't really the first place people focus on "Clean" living in general...
It reminds me in a way of my buddy who was a bodybuilder, kept preaching to me about the danger's of eating this, and that.... VERY strict diet...
(He also smoked three packs a day)..
In essence, I feel focusing on "Indoor clean-air" at a bar is ironic. Germs, alcohol, and unhealthy behaviour abound anyway. (Which is why I favor individual choice, rather than mandate in such a scenerio) JMO
In making it elective, or adult choice.. The individual adults decide "rules" by NOT supporting or going to the bar that allows smokers, in essence boycotting it in favor of the "no smokers" bars... Collectively, the public creates a tacit "law". Smoking bar can't survive, assuming most feel as you do.

btw, My feelings are a bit different on establishments that are serving food and have minor children present, such as restaurants around say...evening or afternoon... I don't know exactly how I feel regarding restaurants and this law.. That get's tougher... Smoking has been linked to problems in youngsters that they shouldn't be subjected to...Not sure, so I want to qualify that my opinion pertains to "bars" that serve alcohol to "adults", and let's assume also "after 11 PM"...

Don't many of these companies conceal certain things on labels ? Don't adults feed these foods to children ?

I'd love it As a person who can't drink I get tired of faking being drunk to get hit on by gorgeous single women !

Sure, there's all kinds of sneaky things put into foods to extend their shelf lives, enhance flavors, make them look pretty, etc. It's all about the money really. Food companies want you to keep buying their products and they want to get the most profit out of them that they can. But how can all this be stopped? Who can make the big boys change their nasty ways? LOL If not the government, then who/what? People seem to have a very short attention span when it comes to insisting that something be done. They either get bored or give up in frustration. Too bad! :(

I wonder how many kid's, or people diagnosed with certain illnesses mental and physical alike, are suffering from some sort of food allergy, poor diet, additive, preservative, etc
