With all the blues up here in Chicago you'd think I'd have more
ideas. When I hear a blues band they are either playing old songs
or jamming. I love the feel of the blues it has a freedom about it.
It leaves room for your own interpretation.

Kappy - I took 1 year of Music theory - yuck. Your right it is harder
than a math class. Who'd of thought music was so complicated. You
have a great memory I can barely remember how to draw a note let alone compose.

Bab's Music Theory starts to get pretty tough around Theory second year when getting into Figured bass, Neopolitan 6th's, etc..  By 3rd year (composition), it's so complicated, it makes some of us think about becoming jocks instead  :(  Incidently, this is taking into consideration I started music at 3 years of age... Basic Intro to music (college level) is very tough for most.  Ear training is close to impossible for some that never learned to differentiate minor/major/2nd/3rd intervals...Ear training is excellent for all here that are musicians anyway... practicing singing intervals, hearing them, recognizing them, etc... Helps get technique tuned up... This should be practiced either with another person, or with a tape recorder.. When *I* try to site sing, or do ANYTHING by ear singing (especially harmony) I sound like a rabid cat getting stung by wasps.... It's awful... I still have LOADS of work to do on trying to sing intervals.... On a piano or tempered instrument, this is easy, voice isn't quite so easy an instrument to fine-tune.

actually enjoyed that. It was almost like a game.

One of the comparison's I've always enjoyed was on the liner notes (if you don't know what liner notes are, go ask your dad) for an album by Leo Kottke.  If I recall correctly he sang 2 songs.  The guy who wrote the liner notes described his voice as sounding like "goose farts in the wind".  Now that's a sound to aspire to!

I read this earlier, and assume now you meant "into the wind". Unfortuneately I was facing the pond a short time ago, (south) and the wind was blowing from the North, as luck would have it.... I'm now engaged. Problem is Larry,  It's also "A Muggy Day" here in CT, and all sort's of things can happen under the right set of conditions...

I have had NO formal training whatsoever... unless singing in the shower is formal? I am not terribly worried about it right now but it would be cool to get some vocal coaching someday. For now I just sing as much as I can and as many styles as possible. It's working. I can sing stuff I never used to be able to, and have better control. Oh and Babs, the blues are new for me too. I only recently even tried doing blues stuff and discovered my voice lends well to it. I even tackled some Etta... which I never could see myself singing before.

i would love to study at least rudimentary music theory. i absolutely hate math, but when you realize that music IS math, it comes alive for me.

You gave me an idea.  KEYWORD:  FUN EAR TRAINING..  I have books, from theory days but that's over 30 years ago.. Computer must have fun midi stuff where you listen, and repeat or something like that and get points...  Ear training is something EVERYONE that sings should never stop doing completely...  It's a type of precision training.. Like Solfege <SP> not a bad thing to do a few times a week while yapping in here even

I have a horrible block when it comes to math/quantitative Sciences, or abstract problem solving..  I got beat for what I couldn't understand as a kid.... Similar to what ATM was mentioning elsewhere, they didn't understand Physical, mental, and LD situations in the 50's thru much of the 70's.  The mental health field, and medical fields of 1/2 century ago are to blame for what they told our parents... Such as "Ignore him, he's being stubborn"  -  Never occurred to anyone I was 75% deaf until I was almost six.. Life of abscesses and fluid buildup, I guess that's why people always said "Your banging too hard" when I was starting on the piano... ADHD, wasn't diagnosed and treated until they recognized I had it  (That was 9 years ago)..  I was 41... Synesthesia, Anxiety, Slow Hyperactivity, NONE of that they considered a problem in my day, they didn't know what it was.  The answer was Corporal punishment... or "Ignore him, it's a type of tantrum and stubbornness"..  It's just how many of us grew up with LD's, mental issues, etc....  No one had a clue.... Can you imagine a Kid being 75% deaf ?  and they send the kid to shrinks, punish the kid, but they never detect (even in a baby that had chronic ear infections, and viruses) that the child has hearing probs ?   From infancy until 6 (very impressionable period) Everyone was either screaming at me, or I was sent to kid therapists because of my refusal to listen, comprehend, and feel the comfort that other kids felt when they heard words of reassurement, etc...I was getting yelled at and punished... So if folks wonder, "Why is Kappy perfect, and I'm not", you now know why !  I had to be, otherwise I got beat up..
The medical field/mental health field years ago STUNK....It wasn't the fault of our parents,  they did what they were told to do by "the experts"... "Don't cave into his stubbornness and tantrums"....

The dumb ____'s never had a clue that I couldn't hear.. Just never occurred to the stupid ____'s... FInally I had my adenoids removed ears drained, worked on.... and hear I am... Typing even amongst these noisy threads !
OK, now where were we...

Oh yeah... The blues.... Root of our genre's pop music style..

Oh yeah,  My point was... I can't learn algebra now.... because it was too tough when I was in 3rd and 4th grade getting taught decimal places, and fractions, or just the basics of balancing equations and solving for variables... I couldn't focus on that stuff... didn't get it... About five years ago a friend (math teacher) tried showing my just how easy Alg. 1 really is... guess what, I COULDN'T get it.... I reverted back to the past.... It's horrible what some adults do to kids... They condition us making it tough to ever learn certain things.. As the result of coming from a hyper-critical childhood of technical people... I fear anything "technical" now..

I never studied most of the math except for algebra in junior high. My biggest problem is anything abstract. My youngest sister has the same problem but my folks think it is just a matter of discipline still. She just turned 17. At least she can talk to me.

I did ok in math til 7th grade, then I crashed horribly. Grade 9 I had a math teacher who would write things on the board then leave. I flunked. Next year I got him again . I was given a general level credit, then allowed to proceed to Grade 10 math. I got a good teacher that time and ended up with honors.... but guess what? I still suck at complicated math .
