It seems like the average around here for most KJs is about 3500 non-duplicated or about 5000 duplicated.

I currently run at about 6200 non duplicated, which is about 10000 duplicated (though I don't print dups in my book).

Like everyone is saying, though, as long as you have a good base set coupled with some of the more recent songs, no one is going to care how big your book is because you'll have 95% of what people actually sing.

The girl up the street from me advertises that she has 18,000 songs, but she only has about 7000 non-duplicated and the rest is just printing 18 versions of "Friends in Low Places" over and over again in her book. I for one am not impressed and she complains all the time that everyone bitches because they can't figure out which version to write down!!

If you are jsut starting out, I'd print your dups just to have a more substantial looking book, but once you have about 3-4K unduplicated songs, I'd only print the best versions in your books!!

I have a Cavs machine - deleted all the songs that came with it. They are rotten recordings in my opinion. Uploaded all my own stuff - more work, but worth it.
I don't care how many songs you have there will always be someone to say you don't have enough. I am so done buying! Unless I add a few that are really neccessary because there hot. Heck no you don't need a lot of songs. I started with
4000 and I get just as many people as I do now ask for more. Geez

Yeah. the CAVS machines were generally loaded with Sweet Georgia Brown & Nu-Tech stuff normally - which sets did your come with, or did it even say?

LMAO I didn't even really look that close. I knew before I got it I was replacing them.
I listened to a few, but honestly don't remember. Most of the problems people face with using a Cavs is from using the songs they put on there. I read a lot about the machine before I purchased it. I knew my collection was better quality. I do remember it had I think close to 10,000 songs.

As long as we're on the subject is anyone using super discs? I know different manufacturers call them different things, but I'm sure you know what I'm talking about. I got a cheap Cabs player off of ebay that played these discs. Crap crap crap. I think 4,000 songs came with it. I am not impressed with the quality.

Yeah my CAVS machine came with the NuTech SCDG - I don't even include it in my book...its just stuffed in a drawer somewhere...however at their site they also carry Chartbuster and Top Hits Monthly and I'm ok with both of those. I just go through their lists now and then and pull together enough to make a CDG - usually 15 - 18 songs. I still look to buy full CDGs though...this just kind of fills in the cracks.

The Magic Tracks SCDG I got is awesome...I wish I could find others as good - I see now that SGB took over Magic Tracks though so I don't know how it is now. I keep a separate book for my Magic Tracks songs, but we'll put that in and sing off it for hours. The lyrics and music both are pretty good on mine...comparable to the better CDGs I have. Like I said in my previous post, the NuTech SCDG sucked bad...music was bad and the lyrics were just nuts...I think they got their lyrics from Bob's Discount Lyric Barn LMAO

when we print our books for parties and such i list the duplicate because there are songs that i may love one version and hate another--this lets the singer pick the one they want. however, i never say we have 1100 songs, i say we have 1100 selections. saying we have 1100 songs is a flat-out lie.

a good way to get your songbook fat FAST is to have the alpha by song and the aplha by artist list in the same book, one behind the other.

Yeah GiGi...I know I have around 4,000 songs, but probably only 2,500 individual songs. I'm not a KJ though so mine is only for home use so if I wanna say I have 4,000 songs it doesn't matter LOL. If someone wants a song that I don't like I tell them to buy their own CD - mannnn I'd never make it in business LMAO. I'm kidding of course, but one of these days I really would like to set this up on my PC so I could actually have a search feature to cross reference the song, what discs it is on etc....I could be at this for years LMAO

Star Disk for country.

LMAO  Yes.  LOL

No, seriously, another KJ turned me on to them, and I think they're pretty good for country.  And before they raised the price of them this year, I bought several.  But now that they cost the same as Chartbuster, I go with them instead, unless I like the song selection better on Star Disc.

I agree with several on this subject:

Purchase the Sound Choice Foundations (good deals on ebay) and Bricks, then mortar sets. You simply cannot go wrong with this selection. You will have really good quality versions and the best bang for your buck due to no duplications.

Then I would recommend that you listen to your customers and purchase what they want you to have, after all they are the ones you need to please.

Don't get caught up in the number of songs you have. Purchase quality first and as you budget allows. If your intention is long term in this business then purchasing quality will save you alot of money.

When I first started I had like 150 CDG's then I set aside 50% of my earnings for the first 2 years to reinvest in discs. Then I adjusted to 20% of my earnings thereafter and after 8yrs in business I have been able to build a solid collection of over 10,000 songs with minimal dupes. I've put a ton of money in music but feel it's necessary have a solid library.
