Just curious if anyone on here has had any experience with ebooks?  There is a book I am wanting to buy and just found out I can buy it online as an ebook for a 1/3 of the price.  I have a spare laptop I can read it off of.  Just wondering if anyone has done this.  Pros; cons, etc.

Can you tell us what ebook you are looking at?

I've never considered E books before.. I find it hard to read long documents on a computer... it bugs my eyes after a while. I am old school when it comes to reading, if I really like a book I add it to my collection. My parents got me reading at 3 and I have been addicted to books since .

I fully respect that.

My screen is adjusted to 75 Hertz. This keeps it from flickering at the same pace as the light. That is also slow enough that it helps me to focus on what I'm reading. The constant pulse keeps my eyes focused on the screan whereas, with a book, my eyes continue to jump off the page.

For every line I read in a book, my eyes will "jump off" the page at least once. That is getting better as I get older. It used to be much worse. To date I have read about ten books from beginning to end.

The book I am thinking of is "The World is Flat" by  Thomas L. Friedman.  I haven't bought one in a long time but this one interests me.

The basis behind it is dealing with world globalization.  Before Columbus the world WAS flat.  Everything as far as information was straight line as far as you can see.  After we found out it was ROUND, information took time to get from point to point.  Now with computers the world is basically FLAT again.  We are back to point to point and with computers no place is unnaccessible.  Gheez!  I beginning to sound like Steven again.  I'm getting way to deep in my think tank!

If its something longer than a few pages I print it out. I dont think I can read a full book off the monitor. But I have never try doing it.

Jian, I have never read one off a computer either but thought I would give it a try.  Have a feeling that more and more publishers will be going to that in the future.  Of course I still like the feeling and the smell of a new book.  :yes:

I agree that it seems the change is coming. This worries me, am I afraid of change or just being paranoid?(rhetorical)

If its cost only 1/3 of the hard copy I will go for it. Books (the real one) are so expensive now a days. In my country they are even more expensive. I used to borrow them from the university library. I think its a matter of time ebook will over take the real thing. just look at the music scene; there are a lot more legal download nowadays.

This is an interesting thread.  I know people who refuse to throw out old (even obsolete) text books from school.  They treat anything that's a book as if it's a priceless "appreciating asset".  Personally I don't understand this, but of course I still have all my 45 and 33 rpm records too, so who am I to talk.  Is it nostalgia ? or respect from something that his impacted you in some way ?  Why collect books, or just not part with them ?  Some won't..   Text books for school cost 3 arms and a leg..... Resale on books is so little too...
