I know this is not a blues song but what about Bobby Gentry's Ode to Billie Joe?
it was a pop song but has some blues overtones.
I'll ask my sister about some blues power songs..she has a bunch of them in her karaoke library. Perhaps she will come up with some goodies :D
I will be talking with her tomorrow and get back to yah

Quote: know this is not a blues song but what about Bobby Gentry's Ode to Billie Joe?
It's blues. It's not traditional 12 bar, or a standard style regarding the "turn around", but it's format is still l-lV-V, or blues in root composition, and, It's sung entirely within the blues scale..
Here.. Listen to the "Billy joe McAllister jumped off the Tallahachee bridge" part
Assume you play this in "C" (for simplistic purposes of looking at this on piano..) The "turn around" would sound like
C (Billy joe McAllister) jumped
Bb (off the Tallahachee bridge)
True ~
But here's what's happening compositionally:
Billy Joe McAllister (sung on the turn around) is C in root, and a C starting note sung.
JUMPED OFF however is F which is the 7th of G....Which is an alternative form of the Dominant or G (your 5th) compositionally, and can in fact even be layered over it. It can be played Billy joe McAllister (C) to a Bb bass note-off the tallachee bridge... *which is how it sounds*, but compositionally it's just G7.... Gentry is singing "Jumped off the" which is (F) or fundamentally the G7 chord, Play "off the talahachee bridge" F singing part, with the G bass note (it's a blues turn around variation played off the 5th or the G). It's blues using the 7th chord..
The song is sung entirely within the C blues scale, and compositionally
I-I-IV-I-V7-I
Blues

Another master of camouflaged blues is Robbie Robertson. Listen to "Somewhere down the Crazy River". Very tricky, but it's blues. It's fascinating what RR is actually doing in that song.. Without sitting at the piano, I don't recall if it's Dom7 suspension's he uses. But this is an example of why we say alot of Jazz is even blues in composition. You have to analyze a songs root composition.. Bell's & Whistle's can dress it up all nice and pretty, but underneath it all, it's still "blues"
<PERK> Hey Flipper, I think when I get rowdy, and my threads get pulled, I'll start calling it "jazz" LMAO

Babs, my 3 favorite to do are I Just Wanna Make Love to You, Damn Your Eyes (Etta James) and The Sky is Crying (Stevie Ray Vaughan). I have heard you sing, you have the right voice for all 3 (and I have the backings if ya want em :D )

I hope, in time, I will read enough posts like this to understand better what is being said. I don't get to hang around with my family, who would also be my musical mentors.
My father's father was a high school band teacher and my father's mother was a grade school music teacher who also taught piano. Both had dynamic personalities and believed very strongly in what they did.
Avoiding music the way I did, left me somewhat removed from the family. I can liken it to having a family who is way into mob type activities and growing up to become a priest. Even later failing as a priest and then the family goes "legit" I still will not understand the complexities of how they run their affairs or even the subtleties of how they handle the smaller details.

Chuck,
The truth is, I failed Music Composition. It's a VERY hard course, harder than Calculus or Algebra IMO, I just know enough theory to keep me too stupid to talk to theory-based musicians.. What I do, I do by ear.. I dropped out've classical at a young age.. It wasn't :fun:.. Some play instruments, other's study theory... While I HAD to learn enough theory to get by, and later teach instruments... I'm not a technical enough person to get into abstract area's of advanced comp.. If I could, I'd be proud... It get's to a point, where the only way up is HARD... and when the going get's tough, I run away, and play in rooms such as this one !

My family learned the rules of music just so they'd know how to break them. I did the same for voice. Much like driving, to over simplify. People pick and choose which rules they will break to stay within the limits allowed by their own self-discipline.

I have heard rumors of self-discipline and I think I have even seen examples of it. Growing up the way I did, It is a topic that seems foreign to me. I love my folks.

Yeah I know, I just find the SRV one is in a good key for me so I stick with that one, plus bars are more likely to have it.
