I'm looking for song ideas - I'd like to do some more blues songs,
but I am coming short on female songs. Any suggestions?

Almost anything by Etta James (I Just Want to Make Love to You is terrific) would be good.  Lena Horne too.  If you want something more current I'd say Bonnie Raitt (Let's Give 'em Something to Talk About is a killer).  And dont' forget about Aretha.  R-E-S-P-E-C-T is one of the all-time great female R&B songs.

I'm sure there are a bunch I'm forgetting.

Now as to what's available on karaoke, I'm not sure.  I just looked through my collection and here are some suggestions:

Aretha's "Think" which is another good song. Tracy Chapman's "Give Me One Reason" is another possibility and Alanna Myles' "Black Velvet" has a really bluesy feel to it.  How about Janis Joplin's "Piece of My Heart"?

Bab's,  the possibilities are endless.  KEYWORD:  FEMALE BLUES MUSIC  or FEMALE BLUES SONGS (or some variation).  If you like a few of the songs,  you will likely do a decent job of them.

There's really not that that much of actual blues songs out there on Karaoke. Maybe if you gathered them all togerther there might be enough to make 10 or so full karaoke discs. And most of the blues discs by different MFR's have different versions of many of the same songs..........so that limits the selections even further. Thats why I've taken to writing and recording original lyrics over blues isntrumentals--they are all instumentals from contemporary artists that simply arent available on karoake. And thats unfortunate becuase there is SO MUCH REALLY GOOD contemporary blues out there.

If you're looking for something easy to improvise to, meaning you can sing it any style you want and you can't go wrong. Then I recommend, 'Been Down So Long' by the Doors. I did this one last week, and the whole place was dancing, clappin and stompin their feet. It's basic, to the point, and like I said, no matter what style you sing it, there is no wrong way.

Now you know the more I think about, I don't know your voice or anything, but you could take a novel approach to it. You could take what have been typically male bar/blues standards and turn them into your own thing.
I mean songs like Doors-Roadhouse Blues
George Thorogood-I Drink Alone, Bad to the Bone
I mean they're songs that everone knows, but folks are use to hearing a man sing them. But I gotta tell ya, if a gal could pull those off, I personally think you'd get a killer reaction from the crowd.

That's what I was thinking but was too lazt or not bold enough to type.

i used to do a fair job of the blues singing improv (a la wayne brady on "whose line is it anyway?"). that was a real challenge.

in karaoke i used to do stormy monday blues. don't remember the original artist. and i would blues it up to the max. i thought i sounded great but i was imbibing a bit more heavily then. and i always wanted to try steamroller blues--the james taylor version.

Women doing a good job on a blues tune that was previously done by a man, to me is kinda puttin' my Navy dress whites on a girlfriend. They can look so much better on her.

That may not be the best analogy. I think of it as very sexy when it works.

Etta James has some amazing songs. Both of those songs appeal to a broad base of age groups.

Another good song of hers is "Something's Got A Hold On Me"
