There was a time that Gibson didn't authorize two stores within a 25 mile radius to become a Gibson dealer.  This assured a store they authorized that there wouldn't be direct competition for their product, problem was to become an authorized Gibson dealer, you had to spend at least (something like) 40K anually on their product's minimally, and this was the late 1970's.  I wanted to carry them, but the owner feared sitting on the costly inventory.. He felt if people wanted Gibson, they'd go to White plain NY and buy it from Ash, or go to Manny's, or East Coast Music... They bought quantity and could afford to undercut the retain prices he'd have to charge for an identical model guitar.  People wouldn't by Guild, Martin brands from him... They'd buy Yamaha for less at the larger store, Epiphone perhaps, but the bigger brands just aren't practical to carry at a smaller retailer...(and this was pre-internet)..

Gibson sent me a letter asking me, no, telling me not to ever pick up another one of their guitars. The sounds I make on a guitar really embarrasses them.

Don't feel bad.  At least Gibson notified you via Mail.  Similarly, While Singing, I HAD my ego busted.  Animal control threw a net over me, and some folks hiding out behind shrubs shot me with a tranq gun... Next thing I knew,  I was in the locked ward of the hospital awaiting a court appearance for disrupting the current balance in the ecosystem  :(
