I guess this applies mostly to the singers, (not sure) but does your significant other get jealous when you sing to others.  My wife doesn't but I have a friend whose wife goes nuts if he even looks at another woman while he's singing on stage.  This has really been a problem for him considering he a professional singer.  He has to connect with the audience to make a living.  My wife really thinks its great that I can actually sing to someone and that they'll get tears in their eyes.  If I had Sam's wife, I'd be dead.

If I did sing to someone Rich would probably think it was funny....He is the only person I ever sang to..and it was only once...

And if he was to sing to someone other than me, I wouldn't care..cause at the end of the night we know we are leaving together...It's all about fun....

That's one reason we never hired girls.  Sorry girls.    Too many jealous boyfriends.   I don't need a BF starting fights with customers over his gal.   Not very good for business.   Did have one guy quit because his wife gave him an ol' tomato.    Quit karaoke or I'm gone.

I'll be honest.  I never felt comfortable about a female I'm involved with spending too much time in bars that I know are singles bars... In part because of my own behaviour, and what I recall from that experience performing in them way back, but alot also depends on the woman, her age, etc..  Times of course are different today. There was an awful lot of sleaziness going on in certain bars and lounges back when I used to frequent them.  Which of course is why I continued to frequent them.

I think a reality is however, times and attitudes do change regarding certain behaviour,  most of the female KJ's I've known, as well as female's employed by a bar venue HAVE NOT been the "Fly by night" type.  Today it's as if they are employed in any other job.... This wasn't the case when I was into the bar scene, both working it, and hustling in it

Steven the bars have changed, the people are the same -  I went out with my daughter and my son-in-law several nights not too long ago.  We went from bar to bar and I found that absolutely nothing had changed in twenty-nine years, I found the same people with different faces, lost hearts searching for something that really doesn't really exist in that atmosphere unless a miracle happens.

I'm not sure I've ever sung to someone as far as a romantic, love type song except for Richard...  He & I have both dedicated songs to other people and have had requests for certain songs tho..

I remember when we first got into karaoke (I didn't sing at the time) and a woman came over and asked me if Richard could sing a duet with her; I couldn't understand why she would ask me... Did she think I knew all the songs he was capable of singing or what?  I suggested she ask him and that I was sure that if he knew it he would probably love to sing it..  Keep in mind we didn't go out much before karaoke as Richard worked bell to bell 7 days a week as F&I manager at auto dealerships and I didn't drink while raising the kids (oh how much time was wasted!)...  I now know that some people are so jealous, controlling and/or insecure or whatever that for their partner to sing a duet causes a problem, I actually learned this from a couple we knew pretty well who were both like that...  So now, even if I know both people, if I want to sing a duet with a guy, I'll ask the woman first....

Like Isis said... I know who he's going home with.

Susie :)

I try not to sing TO other women.  I sing AT them instead.  My "significant other" (Geez what a terrible term) is pretty jealous.  She doesn't exactly go all to pieces if another woman pays attention to me but she does let me know at the end of the night that she wasn't all that happy about it.  Even though we both know we're going home together.

This is one of the risks we all take when we're singing in bars.  The atmosphere, the alcohol, the lost and lonely people who are looking to connect with another human being.  It's no accident that a large number of those old country songs were about cheating and bars.

Years ago I worked with a bass player who's marriage fell apart in front of his eyes while we were on-stage.  It started with his wife dancing with other guys.  Then it escalated to her going out with other guys.  Finally it ended in divorce.  Granted this had a lot more to do with the kind of person she was but it's sure something I never want to see again.

I don't know that you have to sing to one person necessarily to connect with an audience.  Maybe if you are trying to elicit a particular emotion from one person but not otherwise.  And when I sees someone doing that it feels a little voyeuristic to me.  I'm not sure why.  I don't object to it but I'm not sure that it's that much of a show enhancer either.

Larry

My fiancee got kicked out of the bar I was working in because
he went into a jealous tirade. It was embarrassing beyond beleif.
He doesn't come to my shows any more unless it is a family gathering.

I wasn't singing - I was just doing my job. One guy kept coming up and
asking me questions. Next thin I know in his mind we were sleeping together.

Bigdog - I agree if you hire a woman you should not let the boyfiend attend the shows unless you are sure they aren't the jealous type!!

BigDog,

Hmmm, I've seen it happen where both of the partners were extremely jealous so I can't see why not hire a woman or if you hire a woman the man can't go to the show but not vice versa...  Sounds a little chauvanistic to me but if it works for you..... (I guess I ought to duck now)

We actually had a KJ with this particular issue and the fact that his girlfriend didn't come to the shows, our request because they were both so jealous of each other, did not stop the harassment/jealousy factor...   she just constantly called him; when she wasn't calling, he was calling her.... he didn't trust what she was doing when he was at a show....  Not a good situation..  That didn't last to long....

I can't see blaming the bar scene, heck, it could and probably has happened at church.  If a person is wired that way it doesn't matter, they are just unfaithful and better that it happens before to much is invested in the relationship than after...

To me blaming the atmosphere lets the person off the hook, it's kind of like saying "She made me hit her/him".

Just my thoughts on the subject,
Susie :)

I prefer to hire girls.  Never any problems.  I've actually seen more problem with guy hosts to the contrary - had one I had to get rid of, little slutpuppy!

My guy would get VERY jealous if I sang to someone else... but he'd never make a scene.  He doesn't mind if I sing duets with others.... 'cause he sees it as a way of getting someone who might not have the nerve to sing.. up and singing.  I'm just the opposite.  I dont mind he dedicates a song to someone... 'cause its usually based on something that's happened.. and I'm totally aware of it.  However... his former gf still comes to the show ... and I must admit... when she asks him to sing duets with her ... I do hear the "jealous voice" in my head.. telling me I don't like it.  Of course, its always at her request .. and its always a love song.. which doesn't help.

And yes.. I know.. we go home together... but still... I just don't like him singing with his ex.  Now.. if he wants to sing with someone else.. no problem.

Oh good lord Cindy, that would twist me in knots, and then I'd totally go nutso. I could not handle that. Maybe, perhaps .... I'm a *wee* bit of a jealous type person.... :D .... but I couldn't stand for my guy to duet with an ex.   I'm afraid damage would have to be done.

I wouldn't sing to another lady. I would and have done requests for women.

I haven't been jealous of my baby in years. When she did the karaoke show by herself, I wasn't worried. I was actually quite flattered when other men showed an interest in her.

Whatever feeds MY ego works for me.

just like chuck, i will do a request but i will not sing for another man. mind you, i am not a professional singer nor am i running a karaoke show right now, it does not come up very often.

i get a little jealous when he sings duets with other women (always at their request, never at his) but he has such a great voice that he is always a good choice for a singing partner. so i cannot complain.

again, the going home together thing. we worked through the jealousy when we were karaokeing seven nights a week and imbibing in a lot of liquid courage.

Susie - your right it does go both ways. I just would never want what
happened to me happen to anyone else. Nothing worse than having a significant
other go crazy when your trying to work.
