I wasn't cute enough to allow myself all of those lofty goals in a woman. My main focus was a woman who would smile when I spoke and laughed when I joked.

You sound as though you learned to be much more honest with yourself, what was important to *YOU* and had a sense of "self", without feeling a need to "prove anything" at a much younger age than many.. I wasn't anywhere near that together, or confident... In fact I was running away from myself, and needing the "quick fix"... (perhaps wanting that quick fix, need isn't a good term in such a case, turns out it didn't satiate any actual needs)
ADDED IN:
Actually that might not be accurate, come to think of it, that still (like alcohol) could've been a means of self-medicating.

"Self-medicating"????
Steven, it sounds only like you were just being all boy.....So why the guilt trip for acting on instinct?...Guys are sposed to chase girls, and lie, and cheat, and all that.
Seeing as how you don't mountain bike, skydive or bunji jump, try making dating an extreme sport....A guy has got to have an outlet, you know? ..and girls thrive on the soap opera a real jerk provides them.

Whoa . . . this is way too deep for me! I come from a galaxy far away where the word "dysfunctional" hadn't been invented yet and the solution to most behavioral problems were dealt with by a swat on the backside. Either that or we locked Uncle Harry in the attic for the rest of his life. I sort of tuned out when we all became victims and now I'm having soooo much trouble keeping up. If someone would write a psychiatry to English dictionary dinosaurs like me might have a chance.
It wasn't a karaoke club but I did meet the woman I'm dating at a place my band was playing. She was with somebody but I could't keep my eyes off of her. This went on for 2 years! It got so whenever we played the club I would watch the door waiting for her to arrive. But I never talked to her. I have always been of the shy persuasion when it comes to attractive ladies-I can't think of anything to say and I'm terrified of coming off like a total moron (so much for truth in relationships).
Finally, I went to the club one night when we weren't playing. She was there with her boyfriend and the only open spot at the bar was beside her. I ordered a drink and she started a conversation with me. We talked for two hours while she ignorned her boyfriend who was sitting on the other side of her. I was concerned that eventually he would take a swing at me but he never did.
A few months later she showed up alone at a gig at another club. It was the first time I had ever seen her alone. I was in my usual addled state and it never occurred to me that she was there just to see me. I just thought she liked the band.
Another few months went by and she started e-mailing me. I've still never found out where she got my e-mail address. It was a few more months before I got up the courage to ask her out (apparently a girl could go well past social security age waiting for me to make my move).
To make a very long story short, it turned out that for nearly three years she had been hoping I would initiate something. During that same period I had been telling myself I would never have a chance with someone like her. Anyway, that was almost 4 years ago and we're still together.
I am nothing if not a hopeless romantic! Or maybe I'm just hopeless. One of these days I have sit down and figure that out.

Yep........Trust me on this.....gals prefer action over words.....next time you don't know what to say, do something instead!.....Try this: Take the cordless mic and just walk up to her and take her away from her man and dance with her as you sing to her....Then guide her back to her table and move on with the show like nothing happened......odds are her next song slip will have her phone number on it.....or she will be sitting in your truck when you go to load up.

Keith, you may be right. But a lot of the places I go the likely result would be an inviation to go out in the parking lot to discuss my shocking lack of manners. The sentiment would be expressed in far more salty language of course. If the lady is the one inviting me out to the parking lot I figure I can hold my own-I am fairly capable in the clinches. But if it's the guy I know that it's pretty likely that I'm going to injure my hands during my attempt to rearrange his features into something more palatable. I'm a guitar picker and I like to avoid hurting my hands.
Besides, being shy doesn't always mean I end up alone. In the case of my current lady she began wondering if I was ever going to make a move so one day she asked me if I could give her a ride to the auto repair shop so she could pick up her daughter's car. I got to her house and I was waiting in the car when she came to the door and montioned that I should come inside. Once there, she stepped up close to me, put her arms around me and laid a very nice, albiet chaste, lip lock on me. I was just starting to think this was pretty nice when she stepped back and said, "I'm pretty sure you can do much better than that." Not ever being one to resist a challenge, I showed her that she was right. My memory is that it was quite some time later before we got around to picking up her daughter's car.
She later told me that the first time we ever actually met she would have left with me if I had asked. But I couldn't have done that. I'm just not built that way. And I think I'm too old to change now.
But thanks for the advice. I'm sure it works just fine if you can survive the ones where it doesn't.

Her daugher is terrific-very attractive! But, she doesn't hold a candle to her mother. After I met her for the first time I couldn't recall what she looked like because I didn't have eyes for anything but Mom. I wouldn't have noticed the daughter if she had hit me over the head with a 2 X 4.
Oh man, ". . .got it going on." is so far from reality! When I got divorced a few years ago a lot of my married friends envisioned me spending wild nights with a bevy of younger women. I was starting to buy into this fantasy until I suddenly recalled that 25 year old girls weren't interested in me when I was 25. Why would they be interested now? Besides, once all of the frenzy and fury is over there comes a time when you have to talk. What could I possibly talk about with a 25 year old woman? Leave it to Beaver reruns? Having to wait for half an hour every morning before most of my parts start working again? It's much better, not to mention safer, for younger women to remain a fantasy. Probably much less embarrasing too!

Who has time to talk now a days?.....My present wife is half my age and she keeps all my parts working just fine ....There is this 'older guy' thang going on down here...I guess it's cause all the boys are too busy playing video games and doing the baggy pants bad guy stuff and the younger women here seek stability and a more prosperity than they have to offer.
Maybe Steven can shrink it for us......

My fiancee is 5 years younger than me. I don't think age matters
if the person is stable and trust worthy.

So why the trustworthy thing?....Can't a guy be stable and not so trustworthy?.....I mean, as long as he can be counted on to be consistant, isn't that enuff?

Hear! Hear!, Keith. There is a lot to be said for consistency. I'll admit it's probably not as high on this list as solvency and stability.
I always thought I probably wouldn't mind being a "kept man". Isn't it a good idea to try as many life experiences as possible? That's one I haven't tried yet and I'm looking forward to it. Aw shucks, if it has to be a younger woman I'll just try to grin and bear it. Even if I have to learn to talk tofu and bean sprouts. You know, every time I sing "Lyin' Eyes" I wonder what she's got to complain about.

Well, my husband is a year and a half younger than me. I often joke and say I'm single and have 5 kids. (I have 4.... plus him)
As to the thread, nope, I've never met a bf..... or a gf..... (close, though, haha) in a karaoke club. Prior to karaoke getting popular, I was already married. I've been married for 20 years to the same person, so...... do the math.
However, I did meet my current boyfriend in a karaoke *forum*. :rotflmao:

I have met a LOT of wonderful and special people through Karaoke, including Sharon, Rich, Chuck, Gayle, Steve, Ryan, Dawn...and if you count this "place" as meeting, then add just about everybody else on here...
But no, I haven't met a girlfriend at a karaoke club. I did take my current girlfriend to a karaoke club on our first date...but she won't sing onstage yet...unless it's in a group
Gotta keep workin' on her, I guess...
