Okay, I know that I got some laughs as soon as folks read the subject title.
But living in the South, you can imagine how many request I get for this stuff.
So who has the best versions in your opinion? Now what I would really like to find is just a disc of Skynrd stuff, so I can get it all in one shot.
Now on a personal note. Hey guys, I appreciate and respect the passion which everyone has for a particular disc company. But sometimes, I just think that the comments, get into a personal stab at other folks, and just so you know up front, that's not what I'm about. All I'm looking for is a bit of info, so please respect that, the same way that I respect you. If you have an opinion then cool, please share. But if all you have to offer is a putdown because someone recommends a certain vendor or series, then I really don't wanna hear it. I'm very new to the boards, and I've already had enough ego input. That's not what I need. And please don't think that this is a comment made out of arrogance, or meaning to be rude to anyone in particular, but if the purpose of this board is to help out folks, then there is no wrong or right comment. So please be mature enough to just leave it at that. Thanks.

James

P.S. oh yeah, no comments on my spelling...LOL, sorry can't help it, it's late and the Miller's starting to take command.

The answer is that it depends.  Sweet Georgia Brown has a complete disc of skynrd (SGB 43) and is so-so, better than nothing and fairly cheap.

As for free bird, I prefer the pioneer version since it's only 3 and a half minutes long.

Otherwise, as is usually the case the Sound Choice is probably going to be your best bet.

Thanks Mike. Yeah I need to decide something soon, I would like to have this in my disc by next weekend, cos when folks ask for this stuff, it'd late in the show and they're pretty much blistered by then, so I just wanna be able to say I have it, know what I mean.

Well right off, I see three different companies that have full Skynyrd disc.
Legends, Chartbuster, SGB.
Now I've been real curious about  the Legends series, cos they have a Bowie disc as well, any thoughts on this?

I have some legends tracks and they aren't my favorites, but they aren't horrible either.  Probably better than the Sweet Georgia discs anyway.

In my experience 9 times out of 10 (unless you have a VERY discerning audience) they'll just be glad you have the song they want to sing and won't give a damn what brand it is!

I reiterate, I'd go with the Sound choice versions, but they are scattred around on several discs.  Grab the SGB and the Legends, and your customers will thank you I'm sure.

What about the Sound Choice all Skynyrd disc?  Spotlight #8459.  I have it, awesome sound, very accurate & at least in my shows, it gets used very often.  As for the full length version of Freebird, that's what a fader is for  ;c)

Agree with Lonman. I've got the same S.C. disc, and it's worth the money, IMO.

Cool deal, thanks guys. I didn't see the Sound Choice disc for Skynyrd, so let me dig a little deeper. I'm not a big Skynyrd fan at all, so it really doesn't matter to me personally, but.....when you live in the south, these ole boys hold true and dear to the music they love and if I give them a watered down version or radio edited version, I think they would feel cheated, so I may have to spend the extra bucks on this one.
But this coming weekend, they're having a big birthday bash at the Marina, so I'm sure that I'll more than make up for it in tips. I'll just kinda out of the blue, tell the ole boy that I got something special for him, and just start playing it without introducing it.
I think he'll be happy. And if the customers happy, then the Maninblack is happy.

AllStar, thanks for the links. I did purchase the Soundchoice disc, but got it through ExpressKaraoke.com since they were a few bucks cheaper and free shipping with an order over 50 bucks. Also got the Hits of Johnny Cash as well, have had a couple of folks askin if I could sing 'Hurt' for them, plus it had some other really good choices that I would like to do as well.
Thanks again for the info everyone, I really appreciate all the positive feedback, it really helps make my choice a lot easier.

Sound Choice 8459 is the way to go for Lynyrd Skynyrd.  This is a GREAT disc that will get a lot of use at a typical karaoke show.  I also agree with Lonman concerning "Simple Man" on SC 8922 - well worth the expense to upgrade the SGB "version".

Well I got the Sound Choice disc today. I've listened through it once, and while I'm not overtly impressed, I'm sure the audience will love it just because it's Skynyrd.
I'm just having a hardtime getting into deadpan studio musician re-creations.
Now mind you, the versions of 'Gimme Back My Bullets' and 'Gimme Three Steps' were pretty darn good, only because the sound was a bit more gritty and 'Free Bird' was passable only because the guitar player didn't skimp on the solos at the end.
Please understand that I'm not being critical of the recommendations for Sound Choice, if these are the best versions out there, then so be it. I'm just a ole diehard  Analog guy, where the sound had a bit more warmth and real feel to it. The Sound Choice stuff is digital all the way from the recording, to the mix, to the transfer and for me, you just lose a bit of the raw feel when you process something that much, at least when it comes to rock music.

As for the Johnny Cash disc, well it's okay. The version of 'Hurt' is good, but lacks any emotion to it what so ever, but then again, I'm finding that to be the case in most Karaoke music.
Maybe I'll feel differently about the disc once I get to the club and play them over my system.
Sorry, I know I'm sounding whiney, and maybe a bit too picky. But from a vocalist standpoint, if the music has no emotion to it, then it's hard to sing with any emotion.
Maybe what I'm looking for just isn't out there, but then again, the show isn't about me, it's about the audience. As long as they enjoy it, then it's all good.

I believe you will be happier when you get the disk in your system.  I know on my personal home player, you just can't get the full body of sound like I can on my system at the bar. And even though I'm not a die-hard fan of Sound Choice, like others on here, for stuff like Skynyrd, they usually are the best.

Yep, you are most definitely right. I took a drive out to the Marina and ran the disc on my system there and they sound 100% better than what they sounded at home. Still a little bit sterile for my own personal taste but definitely passable for Karaoke. At least now I can say I have some Skynyrd to my collection. I did a dry run on the Sound Choice version of 'Hurt' by Johnny Cash, and even got some folks come in from the pool commenting on how much they liked that song, so that's a good sign. I guess I'm just being a little too much of a perfectionist when it comes to songs for Karaoke. I mean when you pay 20 bucks or more for a disc, I wanna have my socks knocked off.
But like I said, maybe it's just me, maybe I'm asking a bit too much. Who knows.
I guess it's up to the listener as to what they want for their shows. I'm learning as I go. And again, thanks for all the suggestions. Please remember I'm not being critical of your choices, I'm just having to deal with the Karaoke version vs. what a live band would do.

Maninblack,

There's not a thing wrong with you wanting the best possible sound. Most singers would rather have a KJ who tried their best to have a great sound as opposed to a KJ who just put disks in.

Oh my God, a woman that actually understands where I'm coming from, be still my heart...I think I'm in love :D
just teasin ya.
Deep down inside, I have never been someone who viewed it as just being 'Karaoke'
I've always taken pride in my live sound with a band, and that was the standard that I set, I just wanna be able to give the same effort to my shows.
So thank you so much for understanding,

James

Sad thing is it seems MOST singers don't care what kind of quality the music is, if they did, these little computer shows that are loaded with Sweet Georgia Brown & Nu-Tech garbage wouldn't be frequented.

Okay this is going to be my last post on the Skynyrd I promise.
As I said, my hurry for getting the disc was a birthday party.
I didn't even announce it, all I did was cue up 'Free Bird' went to the mic and said, this is for you brother, 'happy birthday' HOLY COW from note one, the whole dayumed place was up on it's feet. Now granted this is the first time in my life that I have ever sang this song, but lord knows I've had to endure it so many times. I had a good idea of how it went, all I needed to remember was add that little special southern twang to it.
My gosh you would have thought that Dale Jr. had pulled up with the Budweiser truck and it was free beer night. As soon as I hit the first note, these folks started hooting and hollering and going crazy on me. By the next verse they were all singing along. A good time was had by all, and the Skynyrd disc was a definite hit.
So bottom line......I learned a lesson, it doesn't really matter how I feel about certain disc, the way they were recorded and such, what really matters is the audience. If they love it, then I love it. So thank you guys for the suggestion, I really appreciate it.
