I've heard this referred to a time or two on a couple of threads. I've also seen one karaoke show where that seemed to be a common practice.
What are the in's and out's of this?
There seems to be some concerns on the part of the singers that some shows don't allow them to bring their own CDs. Is there a general consesus as to whether this is a good thing, bad thing, common practice, rare occurrence, etc.?

Personally I don't have a problem with it. If that's where the person feels their best comfort zone, then that's cool by me. Of course they understand, that I don't mind them using their own disc, but the rotation remains the same, one person, one song, then you gotta wait your turn again. But I've never had a problem with this. And another reason I don't mind is that since my show is relatively new, my catalog is still somewhat limited, so if they have their own tunes, then cool deal. But that's just my personal take on the subject.

No problems here. As a kj I can't have every version of every song. Also can't buy every genre either, so if you have a disc, bring it in. If I have enough requests for something kind of off the wall, i'll pick it up myself - but in the mean time, bring it in.

Hi
I too have no problem with people bringing their own discs, although my collection is around 3000 songs.
The only possible downfall I can see is if people are using copies or compilation discs and potentially infringing copyright.

I know when I was just a singer, I liked to bring my own disks. Now as a KJ, I have no problem with someone bringing their own disk. (Hey, saves wear on my disks  )

I have no problem with people bringing their own discs. If I have
the same version though I let them know so they don't have to
be bothered with bringing their cd in everytime. I'm glad I can provide
that service. I only had one cd that wouldn't actually play. It must have been a different format. I was afraid he'd be mad, but he said it had happened other places.
I know some KJs have had people accuse them of ruining their discs. This is always a
fear of mine, but is a risk I'm willing to take. I just make sure I handle them with care.

The one thing that bugged me was the ones that just handed up a disc - no jewel case, BRING IN A FRIGGEN JEWEL CASE TO HAND TO THE KJ!!!!!! You don't need to keep all your discs in them, just have one empty one to hand your disc in!

It's no problem. 9,000 songs isn't enough for everyone. Can't buy'em all, like Lonman said. The problem is the discs they hand you. Some of them look like they used them to polish the parking lot. Some people treat their discs like the regular music discs they buy. They don't realize how delicate the graphics makes the disc. Most KJs don't take very good care of their own discs, so they won't take care of customer discs, either. I have seen some pretty scratched up, by other KJs. I try to polish the scratches out, if I can. I treat their discs just as if it was one of mine. Inspect their disc, while they are standing beside you. If you find a crack or really big scratch, point it out to them.
The machine owners manual says never play a cracked disc. The machine spins the disc at around 500 RPMs. That's real fast, considering that records (remember them?) spin at 33-45 RPMs. It could blow up and scatter around inside the machine and kill it.
I use to play people's regular music discs if they wanted to do scary karaoke. I had to stop doing it. To many off the wall songs and I couldn't regulate the content. To get out of it, I told people that someone accused me of scratching one of their discs and wanted me to pay for it. I still use that one. (this was strictly intended for the eyes of other KJs only) LMAO

As a singer I ALWAYS bring my own discs; with case. I put the song slip with the track number and other relevant info between the casing and the CD cover. That way the spil and the CD will not get seperated.

I use to bring new cds out, that a particular KJ didn't have. Somehow, they would always come back with a huge scratch on them. Now I only bring out my back-up copies.....if they get messed up, I still have my originals. I also use the back-ups in my gigs, and never had a problem with them playing well. I have no copies, that I don't have the original CD also.........jj

As a KJ I also don't mind people bringing their own disks. Our selection is close to 9000 song titles but like others we can not have every song. We went to an other Karaoke show a few months back and they were running off a computer and when I asked if I could us my disk their reply was it would be to much of a headache to go up stairs and copy the cd to harddrive so that I could use it. They also said they probably have the song I wanted to sing. They run their show from a computer and don't have a player they can run singers disk from, haven't been back.
Oh....
Yes they had the song I wanted to sing just not buy the Manufacture I like to sing off of.

Sounds like a jealous kj if EVERY disc came back with a scratch.

I"ve always used my own CDs. I've only had one KJ tell be that the song I was requesting was in his book. But, he used mine anyway. I find it best for me - I've tried using the KJ's books and at times they are hard to get a hold of because of the number of singers, or the KJ doesn't have enough book to go around.
I let one individual up to sing one night - I let him select a song out of my song book list. He ask how I can stay in business with only one book. I told him him it easy I'm they only one singing.

I have my whole library converted to mp3+g and written to my hard drive. The two places I go to don't mind me bringing copies of my own disks probably because they know I own the originals. I will not take an original out of my house if I can help it.
I often burn the songs I want to sing the day of the show that I'm going to. I turn in the cd in a jewel case with a slip that says something like Chuck Disk song 1 etc. Things get "lost" or damaged in a club. I learned a long time ago not to hand something over to someone if you really don't want to replace it soon. A simple rule of human nature.
One of the clubs I go to runs the show using KJAMP from their computer. They keep two Plextors on the machine to read customer disks too. They aim to please and are pretty good at it.

I have been to a couple places that will refuse burned discs, but will play the original. I have yet to see any place that flat out refused to play a singers disc.

timberlea,
If you don't mind me asking, why would you alway announce that the singer is using his own CD? I've never seen this happen before.
Jackson

Probably 2 reasons at least that I could see off hand:
1) if it's a song he doesn't have, he don't want people thinking he has it & them wondering why they can't find it
2) If it's a song that skips (or inferior quality) he don't want the audience thinking it's his stuff!
