Can I safely run my MP3 player (via RCA Phono Y cable) into the two RCA female 1/8" inputs labeled "Tape input" on mixer ? There's no "left" "right" designation on either input on the mixer so I assume that's not of concern. I'm cautious before I do anything involving electronics. Safest to ask, and not ruin anything else. Not sure if I would set volume on MP3 player at lowest setting, and use volume control and settings just of the tape input section of the mixer.. (without referencing anything, now that I've gotten a few thoughts together, I thought line-in or any signal that didn't run thru a preamp was passive. Active was powered input.. Not sure.) Sort've like on the computer microphone in would be active input, but line-in isn't an active input ??

Why use tape in? I assume the mixer have stereo channel, use that. you need to use the correct input connector. This way you have control on the signal input.

Yep, I run my iPod through my Mackie mixer and Jian's right. Don't use the tape input, use the 1/4" stereo input. I got my cable from ebay and it's got stereo mini plug on one end and other end is two 1/4" plugs. Just plug in to two of your inputs in your mixer and ready to go. I usually bring up the volume on the iPod and use the slider to adjust the volume.

Thank you Jian, and Eben.
I have two RCA adaptor plugs that are 1/4 inch male made to convert the 1/8" RCA phono Y cable to 1/4 ".. I can use the same Y cable and do as you two suggest, run 1/8 inch out've MP3 player and into 1/4 stereo channels on mixer.
Thanks again ! I would plug into the "passive" line inputs correct ? Not the microphone inputs ?

Its 'line in' and not 'passive'. The audio signal that you get from your mp3 player in line level signal.

Thanks Jian, I don't know the difference between Passive in, Line in, Balanced input, active input (or is it signal OUT that's active ? not in ?) such as preamp out ? I have a site somewhere one of you sent to me, Why the F#$(# I don't sit and read all this stuff and memorize it ? I have no excuse, I think I just resigned myself to the fact that Tech stuff isn't something I'll ever be good at, so I ask questions, and don't try to do everything, and know all things. The tape input section is EFX/Tape.
Thanks again guys, much appreciated !

Thanks Jian ! Reading the site as we Speak ! I'm getting pretty good at these terms too. Funny thing, that Celione Dion, and Freddie Mercury had the same PA. I wonder who their mothers were ? Couldn't find anything on the link about that. Anyway, need to get back to my reading if I don't want to sound foolish when discussing these family relationships with you more adept folks ! Just because I'm not a technical person now, doesn't mean there's no hope !

I was even more uneducated on the subject than you when I first started. I did not dare ask question, so I read and read and read. How I have enough knowledge to understand what the pro is talking about at ProSound.
Yet, the more I read the more I realized I know little. One thing I know and learn from many sources is that the most expensive sound system does not guaranteed the best sound. A lot more depend on the person behind the desk.

I don't mind asking questions Jian, I have a reputation to maintain (even around my area in real) as a technical/mechanical moron. I worked with friends doing some repairs on bikes, and I got booted out've the shop within 15 minutes because I didn't know parts of an engine that most housewives know, during a quick course where I had the oppt to learn, I just kept complaining about how filthy the grease was, and how that crap can get on your hands, so I was invited to leave... "Nothing personal Kaplan, this just aint an area you should be messing around in", I'm used to hearing it. I learn about electronics from explosions, or getting thrown by high voltage. It literally takes sparks, to spark my awareness in the area.
