Ya wanna hear what's dumb? I moved here as a kid, moved away & got married, then came back here..... always right here around Canby & Yoder area...... and never ONCE have I went to the Rose Festival or parade.  :(  I pretty much stear clear of Portland, but I would like to see that once atleast.. and the Portland Saturday Market, I've never been to that either.

Oh, I know where "yonder" is as well.    Growing up, if mom or dad hollered "Get in yonder right now!!"... you best know where they meant.  LOL

Yoder.... is about 1/50th the size of Canby. Really.  Has one old time little market, nothing else. Oh yeah, a "wrecking yard/garage".... full of 1940's-'60's models wrecked cars, haha.... and a lumber mill. That's it. I grew up out there, the guy who's cattle ranch I grew up on owned about 90% of the town. (which was.... not much, I tell ya)  It still remains this little tucked away ghost town. Someday (adding to that long someday list again).... I will buy acreage out there, I love that town. Maybe I'll show ya when we're down, if we're not too hung over for a drive in the country. Lots of good fishing holes out there, and only 15 minutes away.

This isn't actually a "nothing" post... It has a context and relates to what we discussed in the past in other threads regarding the start of bar problems, and, since most of us have been, or are currently employed by bars.. I often think about what's going on with bars today,  what might become of them given certain situations, and compare differences in times in terms of both legalities, and in terms of social aspects... Yet the beginning of "stuff" that affected bars seems to(at least to my recollection) have happened around early-mid 1980's up until early 1990's socially...(pre bar-Karaoke at least, and Pre_DUI)...  So I figured I'd post it in here, regarding situations that slowly but surely affected bar turnout, and began a decline..whether mandates, social aspects, etc..

AIDS epidemic
Date Rape concerns
Sexual Harassment laws (business and private)
Stalking situations
DUI Laws
Drinking age raised from 18-21
Licensing becomes stricter for alcohol serving establishments
Zoning laws become tougher for bars (none allowed near school or churches)
serving of alcohol laws become very strict within the establishments
Extra hour licensing very hard to get in CT  (Cabaret license?)
Two-fers no longer allowed
Indoor cleanair act (smoking ban part 1 and 2)
Local Industries closing down, UTC shuts down several of it's operations locally.
Economy during a war
Increase in gasoline prices
(arbitrary raids in alcohol serving areas in texas)

What next ?  How much more does it take ?

Seems in the beginning however, Most bars (around me at least) are, and have always been "Singles Bars", and I often forget about a big thing that affected the singles scene during the past two decades, (early-mid 80's around here) and so much has transpired since, that I forget about how the decline of the "free love" era around 1970, was really finalized about 13 years later when the "singles bar" pickup scene was affected abit because of the Fear of AIDS. Yet even prior to that, drinking age being 18, and few places were carding... 15 year olds were hanging in local bars when I was in HS...WE ALL drank at bars without being carded 14-18 years of age all partied at bars in the early 70's... EVERYONE was hanging at bars in those days...Ten years later however, Never before was an STD designated as "fatal"...Noone prior to that wanted STD's of course, and herpes was feared, as was third stage syph, etc...But in my singles barhopping days, there wasn't a fear "one nighter" could mean death....at least for males who didn't fear violent aspects of "the pickup" scene...

Shortly after that there was that William Kennedy Smith trial, Mike Tyson, and Clarence THomas hearings, and males became aware of date-rape. Sexual harrassment, etc.  Within a not too long period of time, it "appeared" to most in the singles scene, that there were actually some risks involved !!  Males in the 1970's were basically fearless  when it came to the singles bar pickup scene... While I'm not judging anything as being good or bad, I'm just stating that certain aspects of how the sexes mingled in our culture really had quite an onslaught of barriers the seemed to fall out've nowhere to many... The "One night stand" for the first time (at least in my own generation) had significant risks that it never before seemed to have for the male.... meaning,  one-nighters might be deadly, and could even get the guy arrested EVEN when the girl has agreed to come back to your bed...  We never had that fear earlier on.. this was still prior to DUI laws, and the drinking age being raised from 18-21... Some did lose interest in going to bars around that time period, and I recall the DUI laws scared the *#($ out've the largest number..... DUI law was a huge factor affecting bar turnout, and shortly thereafter drinking age being raised to 21 really hurt .. MANY college kids around here during this time of year especially, as well as school holidays supported bars, they spent ALOT of money on weekends.... most undergrad college kids of course are under 21. Then serving laws got strict, extra-hour "cabaret" license got pulled from most places in CT,  Two-fers weren't allowed,  etc....

Haha, Odie, I just got that one too. Did you forward it to me? I thought my old landlord had sent me that one. Funny stuff.

No, that Yahoo mail virus..... has certain things they say. Like for one, they give a false "return mail" heading. Don't open those. None of them were ever valid emails, and they ALWAYS have an attachment. From what I saw anyhow. I still get them at my online email. My Norton pretty much keeps them out of my Outlook, as does the Postini.

I already deleted it, but I'm sure Bob sent it. He sends alot of stuff like that. But I don't keep much in my Outlook, I usually read and delete.

You know, if I had a hammer, I don't think I'd hammer in the morning.  I think I'd wait until the afternoon.  Maybe I'm wrong..... Call me crazy.

At this very moment I would love to borrow your hammer and use it to hammer all over this land.
