Have you ever did a wedding KJ or DJ that seem to go bad? I've did several weddings over the years but this one things seem to drag on to long such as the first dance, garter, cake... Generally I push these things along but apparently not quick enough this time some of the guest started to leave. One person who I know question why I didnt get the music going sooner (Monday morning DJ). We finally got the music going with about an hour to hour 1/2 left but the bridal party, family and the bride and groom got into it. For the most part they were happy with the event. I even gave out 3 cards and was asked to do every Saturday night at this country club. I have such a good reputation in this area and now fear this will look bad on me. Should I concern myself with these monday morning DJ's or just worry about what the bride & Groom thought? Thanks.

I wouldn't worry to much. People obviously liked you or you
wouldn't have gotten other gigs out of it. You can't please
everyone, as you know. The people who hired you were happy and that is all that counts.

First off, don't worry about the monday moring DJ, it is obvious that you were liked.
Just a suggestion, at least this is what I tell all my B&Gs, try to get all the formalities done in at leat 1 hr.
For example, I DJed a wedding reception this lat weekend....
Wedding @ 5pm
Reception dinner start @ 7pm (buffet)
8:00 Cake cutting
8:15 BG first dance, folowed my fater/daughter & mother/son dance, then the bridal part with every one joinging in about 1/2 through the song. Then played about 3 more songs for dancing.
8:40 garter/boquet toss
more filler/dance music
8:50 Dollar dances, and after that OPEN DANCE
I have found that if the "formailities" tend to take too long, people start leaving. Since most of my cleints want the "dollar dances", I urge them to get the other things out of the way ASAP, as to keep as many people there as poissible.
Also, watch the dinner portion, give it about 15 minutes after the last person is served, then start the "formalities".
The previous time lines seem to work for about 90% of the weddings I have done, you may have to tweak it a bit for your cleints, but it has worked great for me.
Personal I have attended wedding receptions where it took 3+ hours from the time the reception started till the dancing started, and I have seen a lot of people leave. You can only chit chat for so long and it gets BOARING.

The most successful wedding I ever did had the bride and groom sing a song to each other. The crowd loved it because most of the people didn't know they sang.
Weddings aren't as long as they use to be. Around here most are done by 10-11. When I was a kid, they went a lot longer. I get a lot of wedding parties (Bride Grooms) at my Saturday night gig. Two blocks away from a party place. They come in around 12. You would think they would be on their way to the honeymoon. Nope, they have more parting to do. They didn't get enough at their boring wedding. Because everyone left early. Should have had a KJ.
Worst party I remember, I think it was a class reunion. The planners wanted to try something different instead of just having a DJ. I was doing both DJ/KJ. WOW most of the people didn't want to hear karaoke sung AT ALL. They just wanted to dance. Now the ones that wanted to sing didn't want to dance. Everyone was bitching about one thing or the other. I though I was going to get killed, before it was all over. Everyone was coming up and telling me to play this, no play this, no play that, when am I singing my song. A lot of people were mad. I'm sure the following reunion someone else was in charge of the entertainment. They probably did kill that one. I was just doing what I was hired to do. Don't blame me. Couldn't seem to make anybody happy for very long.

When it comes to receptions, the DJ is responsible for the flow of the evening. Keep the B&G, photographer and videographer informed. Coordinate with the venue as necessary. Dinner can drag, B&G can take forever making their rounds, portraits, etc. - many things can slow it down. The DJ needs to keep it moving. My opinion.

I have a friend that has been a DJ for 23 years. He says there are only two things that can ruin a wedding. Bad food, bad DJ. What else can they complain about?

Well I have been Djing for 23 years and I can list a number of things that could ruin a wedding: drunk guest, power failures.... the list could go on. Now this wedding I would not classify as being ruined. I allowed the garter, cake... to go on to long. I should have pushed the bride & Groom along, which i did try but they wanted to mingle longer, but felt I explained this in our meetings and if they wanted to continue at their pace its their day. Marty I do agree with you that the DJ needs to keep things moving but there are times when they decide to go at their pace. The majority of weddings that I do adhere to the schedule but I'm not going to force an issue if the ones who's day it is elects to take their time. The bride and groom appeared to happy with everything and I know the family was but I do have follow-ups with clients and offer a satisfaction guarantee if they are not happy for whatever reason I refund their money. I've never had to do this but maybe this will be the first. They get back off their honeymoon this weekend I will meet with them then.
