Hi folks, new to the scene here. Been doing karaoke for about 3 months now.
I come from a live band background with 30 plus years singing experience.
I lucked out and found a resort/marina close to the house, and do shows on the weekends with the possibility of maybe doing an open mic show as well.

My setup is as follows:
VocoPro DVX780K
Crate PX900 pa head w/seperate eq's for mains and monitors
2 Kustom cabinets with 15's and horn on stands
2 Crate monitors with 12's
3 mics

I currently only have two books:
Chartbuster Essential
Chartbuster Essential Vol.2

Created my songbooks using the program Karaoke Song List Creator

I welcome and am open to any suggestions that you may have to help improve my setup or music selection. I have been reading the forums here for about two days now, and have found a wealth of information so far, and hope to learn more in the future.
Respectfully yours,
James H. Gilbert

Hi James,

Welcome to KS. Your set up look good, may be just may be except the, VocoPro. Most people here don't like it.

For your disc collection , you will find tons of information in the Tech forum. There is one still active now. http://www.karaoke-forum.com/viewtopic.php?t=7002

Welcome to KS !!

Ya Jian's right most here will tell you they don't like Vocopro.

If you have questions about equipment and how to run it the best place to post is the
technical forum or just do a forum search.  :dancin:

Hey thanks for the heads up on the VocoPro. Actually the one I'm using is the one that was there at the Marina. I'm still shopping around for a permanent one of my own, so if anyone has any suggestions, please feel free to let me know. Now please keep in mind that I don't mind spending money on a good product, but I do have to maintain a budget. So far the shows have paid for all the equipment that I've purchased, but still I'd like to sometime in the future show a profit...LOL
Again, thanks for all the welcomes and feedback.
James

I suggest getting a vintage player from e-bay.

I just bought a RSQ triple tray off ebay for $190.
It was refurbished by Acekaraoke with a warrantee.

If you can find a RSQ MV-333 or a Pioneer PD-V10G - they rock!

I haven't heard anything good about the new players on the market.
They stopped making most of your true blue players - they are trying
to get people to buy the new players that play multiple formats. Super CDGs etc....
In my opinion they are doing it to try to make more money by selling you the discs
that will only play in their machines.

Hey thanks again for all the welcomes, especially from the ladies ;)
no offense to all the guys, but it does my heart good to see so many women active in the karaoke scene, I think it's great.

I've been checking into players and I'm pretty much drawn to the RSQ series, since it seems to be most flexible as far as the formats it will play.
Also I really want to go wireless with the mics. Now in the past when I did the live band thing, I used either Shure or Samson, but as far as Karaoke, I don't have a clue as to what would be the best or most reasonably priced units. So again, I welcome any feedback on this as well.

Thanks again,
James

Welcom Maninblack,

You said you were looking for suggestions.  I suggest you tell the rest of us how you managed to luck into a resort gig close to home!  Sounds great and I hope it turns out to be a long term gig for you.

Larry

How did I get the gig?
Well I already knew the restuarant manager from his previous job. I was sitting there during happy hour one day and we were talking about what types of live entertainment he was gonna book for the season. He mentioned a couple of bands in the area and talked about the possibility of doing Karaoke. He said that at one time he had a guy lined up, but tried him and really didn't care for his style. He was looking for someone who could cater to the dinner crowd as well as working the bar crowd later in the evenings. I ask if I could see his setup, of which he showed me. We fired up the unit and I sang a tune, something a little lowkey, since there were guest eating in the diner.
After I was through, I got applause from the customers, of which the manager walked over and introduced me as his new Karaoke guy. It was simple as that, being in the right place at the right time. I brought in my pa, set it up, and did my first show that following Friday night. Now granted, I really didn't have a clue as to how to run a show, but I had been around enough shows that I could wing it, and slowly but surely in three months time we've got a pretty decent following. Now not a day goes by that I don't learn something new, or look for ways to improve the show. I have several guest that also run their own shows that come out and are always willing to make suggestions on what I could do better or different from other shows. So I take the best of the what they offer test them out, if they work cool, if they don't work, hey it's still cool, afterall it's still a learning experience. I've since upgraded my pa, added some new disc, redid the songbooks to make them a bit more user friendly, even started looking into a wireless mic system, so forth and so on......
But it's a start. As long as the gig pays for the equipment, disc and such, I'm a happy camper. To me it was an answer to a prayer, and I know to some that may sound silly, but it's true. I'm a single guy living in a small town, just looking for something to break the boredom, to help keep me focused and hold the demons at bay....LOL

Welcome James...I've been in Singers Showcase for awhile but am fairly new to the forums. I don't do any shows, but I host parties at my home and have a pretty decent setup for home use. I did end up getting a CAVS DVD202G that plays all formats and just love it, however I'm not a tech wizard so am probably not the most reliable source. I use mine pretty heavily though and its worked very well. I'm still kind of navigating my way around here, but thought I'd say hi. Good luck with your gig!! Drea :)

Yeah I'm gonna have to do my homework on picking out a new player. Both RSQ and CAVS look really interesting. I just need to find out(from the folks here) which one will give me the most versatility and bang for my buck. The marina where I'm at has a VocoPro, but of course I want to have one of my own, because I've already been ask about doing some private parties, so I need to be as self reliant as I can.
Thanks for the suggestions.

I use a Cavs JB 199 and love it. I also use a RSQ triple player for discs.
As far as wireless mics Shure of course is the best if you can swing it, but you might not want the drunks throwing around expensive mics. Again I suggest e-bay. I picked up a couple really nice Audio Technica series 3000 on e-bay for half the price.
Really great wireless mics! Remember duel diversity is better. You have to consider the interference you may get from the bar itself make sure the system has several channels to chose from. Good luck - I would suggest posting these kind of questions in the technical forum you'll get a lot more responses. :oh yeah:

Again, thanks for the suggestions. I'm still doing my homework on a new player and wireless system, so I haven't quite made up my mind yet, and of course there's the money issue. Yeah it's finding that happy medium between quality and durability. I would love to have a Shure wireless setup, but just not sure if I can afford it at this point. I am currently using Shure 58's for my system, and I know that they can handle even the worst drunk in the world(that would be me, but that's a different story and a long time ago)
In fact a guy who runs another Karaoke show in my area, is gonna bring by a Shure Wireless this weekend to let me check out. I think I remember him saying that he paid somewhere between 4-5 Hundred for his setup. So we'll see. Again thanks.
