Pet Peave #1 - Don't ask me to start the song over because you missed your cue due to the fact you're drunk, doing a shot  , too busy talking to your freinds, not paying attention or just plain stupid....  NOW if you are a karaoke virgin
You do get some special treatments.......

Pet Peave#2 - NOW that NJ is smoke free and you have to go outside to LIGHT UP
more and more times lately I call the next singer only to hear someone yell - THEY'RE OUTSIDE SMOKING,,,,,,, :(  :(  sign of the times I guess

Don't come up and tell me "I skipped you"  that you follow Jack and now your worlds upside down and you can't live because Jack sung and you didn't get called next .... I called  you one singer later --ON PURPOSE --- The 10 slow songs in a row was driving people to suicide and I needed a SINGER WITH LIVELEY Song NOW!

And just because you BLEW the song and can't carry a tune in a bucket  DO NOT LOOK AT ME WHEN ITS OVER LIKE I DID SOMETHING WRONG !!!!!! or worse say in the mic --THAT RENDITION OF THE SONG SUCKED  LOL

LMAO Why is it when someone sings like crap it is everyone elses fault?
I had a professional Elvis impersonator have a cow over the microphone because
it wasn't his key, it wasn't his rendition, etc... I asked him to not say stuff on the mic if he had problem to come to me. I explained I can change the key and unless he had his own disc he will get the rendition I have - it's karaoke.  He came in with a boat load of attitude passing his business cards around. No one clapped because he made a a$$ out of himself. I never saw him again. Good riddens.

Sorry folks, but I've been sittin here reading these post and laughing my arse off, because I can mentally picture every situation, and believe me I know exactly what you're talking about.
Here lately especially since my show has started to pick up and I now have my own regulars, I get a lot of folks wanting me to sing with them. In particular it'll be the Karaoke Virgin, who's still a little bit mic shy, but still wants to get in on the fun.
The first time I did the 'will you sing with me' I still had my vocals up in the mains and ended up having to carry quite a bit of the tune, which is no biggie, I mean you gotta train your young rookies...LOL  But the funny part was later on after I had finished singing a song of my own, I could hear his buddies going, 'hey man, he sings just like you'....LMAO, it was priceless. So now what I do is just keep my vocals in the monitors and pretty much just try to coach the newbie along. You know, just making sure they hit their mark on time, stay with the tempo, help them along with the right key, just kinda hanging out in the background being their support system. Now I know some of you don't have the time to do this with as large of a rotation as you have. But my show is still new and growing, and it makes me feel good to give that person a confidence boost and make sure that everyone has a good time. And it has done wonders for my tip jar, believe me :D

But anyways, keep the stories coming, it's great to know that I'm not the only person out there who's had to deal with these situations.

Maninblack -  LMAO
Even with a big crowd you will still be doing that stuff. You are
learning to be a great KJ. Smart idea only putting your voice on the monitor.
A lot of things you'll learn on the job. I can tell your a good KJ because you aren't thinking of yourself, but the singer. A lot of people who help out others singing will
just sing over the person because they think they're better.  :hi5:

maninblack,

Great idea!  I wish I had thought of it.  That's what makes this a terrific site; the exchange of ideas.

On nights that there is a shortage of people that are willing to sing, I have intentionally blown a line or two to make it look like I'm not perfect.  I'll say right in the mike "Opps, you gotta read the words."     Everyone laughs.      Just so they will say, if he can blow it, then Ill try it.

What is it with these ELVIS jerks.    Had one just like him.   Flubbed every song.   He has his own karaoke machine.   All he sings is Elvis.   Mostly the same 4-5 songs week after week.   Still can't do any of them right.    I was the A**hole.    I made him sound bad, too fast, too slow, wrong key, bad version, too dark, too light, too hot, too cold, I like the other mike better, too loud, not loud enough........It never had anything to do with being too drunk or too much stuff up your nose or just a big a**hole to begin with.    I found my excuse to get rid of him.   It was his birthday and he was smashed.   He threw one of the mikes after his song disaster...... See ya.... you're extremely done.     He came back the following week and sent his wife up to see if he was still barred.    Yep.   This ain't the first place he's been barred from.   Found out from another KJ.   So nice without that jerk.

Question for you all.     How many times do you have to sing an Elvis song before you can do it without screwing it up?    They must be extremely complicated.   Or you just have to be a jerk to impersonate the king.

LMAO Or I want to use your mic.

Dah - all the mics are the same -
I have a regular that swears my mic is better. The funny thing is when I set up
I don't keep track of which mic is which because they are all the same. He's probably
singing into a different mic every time.  LMAO

Like Maninblack, I've got a kick out of reading this post. It's nice to know you're not the only one going through some of this ridiculous stuff.

I'm a quiet singer myself, and one night after repeatedly telling a couple of drunks they need to hold the mics closer, and them insisting something was wrong with the stage mics, I jumped down, sang a power song into them (alternating between the two mics during the song) and ended with "See, there's nothing wrong with the mics" I firmly believe in quietly trying to help any singer, but if you try to blast me to make yourself look better, I have no problem retaliating.

To the comment earlier about turning up music/mic, as a KJ at your station, your hearing the sound in the same spot all night, and if this disc, or whatever isn't the same sound level as the last song, then you know to adjust vocals or music, just give us a minute, we'll fix it.

My favorite that hasn't been listed yet: I had a guy the other night ask me why did I make everyone else sound good, but when he sang either the music or his vocals we're too loud or not loud enough.  This is the same guy, week after week, who I keep telling "You need to learn mic control"; If you know you're about to get louder, move the mic away, and vice-versa

(sorry, I got started and couldn't stop typing    )

my favorite comeback when someone wants to use my mic is that "my mic is set for my voice so you won't sound good coming through it.  the other mics are set to nuetral so everyone sounds good".  i always get the "oh, ok, thanks!" on that one.

I'm totally with you there - Even when I tell these guys if your going to get loud
back away from the mic, they never listen. I just keep my hand on the volume. I swear these guys are deaf. How can't they tell they are ear piercing!

Yeah and those guys that won't put the mic to their mouth and sing in a whisper will be the 1st ones to scream in the mic when they are done, and the volume is maxed.

Girl comes up to sing, I had to turn the mics up to the max because she sang in a whisper. After her, I call her boyfriend up and he's already bitching at me, to turn it up that he couldn't even hear his girlfriend. So he grabs the mic and says again, you need to turn up the mic. Little did he know that I still had the levels up from when his girlfriend was singing, so he comes off like'HEY YOU NEED TO TURN THE MICS UP' and of course it's blasting full volume, and of course everyone in the place starts to laugh. I left it up on purpose to show him, that I did in fact have it turmed up, but that since his girlfriend sings so soft that nobody heard her. He finally understood that I was in fact trying to do my best, and apologized. I just smiled and said 'that's cool' I just wanted you to know that I try to treat each person fairly and give a 100% which it comes to trying to make each person sound the best they can.
But also since that time, I have expanded my pa, so I've doubled my power and ability to enchance the softer singers.
Also the girl I mentioned has come back to the show, and I offered her to come up, and took the time to show her a little bit of mic control, and she was amazed at the difference and of course the boyfriend was happy as well(the music swells as birds fly through the air and the sun sets on another beautiful and happy ending.)

Satisfying the next American Idol, one ego at a time ;)

I have a lady singer that has the wierdest voice inflections you ever heard.    Sometimes the first part of the word can be heard and then drops off to the buzz of gnat wings, flying past at 100 feet out.    The next word will start out soft and the ending will be loud.   Then she gets real loud, so I turn it down, then she is so soft you have to turn it back up.   One sentence will be loud, the next a whisper.    I HATE HER.     Up and down the whole way through every song.

Tell me how to run my karaoke - that will peave me a little
Swing my mics by the cords and slap your hand over the top of the mic and shout "is it on"? - this will almost certainly earn you a slpa back! lol

Next time someone tells you how to set up your sound, ask them if they are married and then proceed to tell them how best to make love to their wife. lol.
