Thanks for asking!  I was told it went over very well and I sounded fine according to my teacher and some friends I invited.  Thanks to all for your sound (no pun intended) advice!  When I needed some more push on the really low notes I held the mic closer and going for the high notes took it back a bit and I guess it worked fine for me.

I sang three songs, upbeat, ballad and medium tempo: "Get Happy", "Everything Happens to Me" and "All of Me".  The pianist accompanying me was marvelous and made it very comfortable for me, singing along with me on the final tune.  She asked me to come back again and said I sing really well!

Thanks for all your help!

Michael

I'm sure someone with enough technical knowledge would know what type microphone best suit's certain timbre, and compliments vocal style.  While most like the Shure SM-series,  who knows.  For certain baritone, bass, or tenor highlights, perhaps a different microphone is more suitable in that it enhances certain aspects of frequency and style, and cuts other aspects. Learning to use a microphone, and tweak a PA to suit ones voice, is yet another area of skill involved in performing.

(I just noticed Milo's link above, and printed it out.  I'll bet that microphone make, brand, and more intricate aspects fall into play here too... Some people really sound good thru a less sensitive microphone for some reason, other's need the microphone to be tweaked on exact settings, and it becomes more of a pain in the butt.... I have an array of microphones.... Mostly Shure, AKG, and Audio-Technica,  some love the cheaper AT pro-8 headset microphone, but many hate it..and love the older Shure pre-SM series. :headscratch:   who knows, the PA plays a huge part too, setup, etc.).  How much is psychological vs actual, I dunno. Yet even THAT plays a part.

Man I was so nervous I don't remember holding the mic now, but everyone said technically I sounded very good and frankly I think I really nailed "All of Me" at the end as the crowd seemed to enjoy that one the most.  I had a lot of fun and hope to go at it again before long.  Thanks! Michael

Great MJK,  sounds like a blast, and a positive experience...

Yet you brought up a point that I don't know many have gotten into in here yet.  Point being, in audio circuits, it's not just a turntable, tape deck, CD, or device that matters, it's the whole chain of components, and the end result is what we hear out've speakers, yet that's only part of the equation...

A vocalist uses his voice--->microphone---->amp------>speakers---->room acoustics similarly... I'm sure equipment does matter.  Assuming I could sing, I WOULD care to learn which microphone is best suited for "me", given aspects of my style.  Microphones capture sound in different ways, and have their own characteristics too.  Assuming I were pro, I'd likely want to narrow down the microphones I use when performing in certain venues... Reason being, even when mic'ing amps, and guitar, there's a big difference in just the Shure SM-48, 57, 58, 5655, etc

Yet this goes over and beyond most Karaoke apps.

Interestingly,it appears that there's close to a 50/50 split in the "tone is more the performer" vs the "Tone is more an aspect of the electronics used"  ongoing debate..

Constantly you hear in musician circuits..  "Tone is in the fingers and soul of the artist" vs "No it's not, the pickups of the guitar, tube amps, even cable and how stomp boxes are wired is more important".....the ratio of which is which is always debated.. Naturally I believe it's both...but that makes me a fence sitter... LMAO
