Well, I've peckered around in the hen house a few times, but I was long gone before the chicks hatched

Okay, so..... thanks Odie. They're gonna love me for this one I'm sure. And all the girlie girls will squeal and think I'm heartless.
Once upon a time, I had a BIG chicken hawk stealing our chickens. (and our rabbits......) It would just swoop down, and snatch one right out of the yard, sometimes right in front of us. So, we started watching for it and keeping the gun handy.
Then one day, hubby is gone, and I'm out in the yard, and all of a sudden I see a bird perched on the top of the roof. (huge 2 story house...... so in my defense..... all I could see was "bird"..... couldn't make out too clearly what the heck it was) I just thought "Well, there's that little ba$tard..... trying to get another chicken". Well, I went in the house to get the gun, but couldn't find what Lonnie had done with the .410 shells, so the next best thing I could grab was the pellet gun. (my sons all had the good higher powered ones, so I figured I could get away with using that)
Anyhow, I pinged it ........ I saw it flutter a bit, so I knew I hit it. But it was still sitting there....... so I pumped up the pellet gun about 12 times LOL ...... and shot again, this time I clipped the wing, which startled it. It tried to fly, then fell in the yard. And....... to my horror...... it was a homing pigeon. NOT the chicken hawk.
Now, before you judge me too harshly: I looked up the tag on the internet, it was a homing pigeon from the Mt. Hood association.... I told them I had an injured bird. (that..... looked like it had apparently been "shot with a pellet gun or something" ) ....... and asked them what to do. They didn't get back to me for about TWO WEEKS. I nursed the little guy, I kept him in a cage in my laundry room, made a splint for his leg (the wing was okay, the pellet just went through it.....) and when he was able to fly around the house okay, I took him out and let him go. The splint had came off, and he barely hobbled when he walked. but he could fly perfectly. He actually circled my house, and came back to me a few times (I think there was a kinship there..... no, really)..... but then, homing pigeon that he was, he finally flew away. And I'm sure he went back to his loft in Mt. Hood.
That's not such a bad thing Odie...... I was trying to save my chickens and rabbits!!

No, not a rabbit........ Though, we have one already. Just one. A big, fluffy, fat thing..... it's my daughter in laws, not mine.
Nope, not an a$$..... they are just like men. Stubborn as hell, and worthless, until you need them to carry something heavy for ya. I have an a$$.... one I'm pretty proud of...... and, I have a hubby who's an a$$ most of the time as well. I don't need another one.

I could understand your concern over a hawk, they are nasty preditors. Although I'm a bird lover, I never know what to do when blue jays bully birds I set nesting conditions for.... Those are nasty critters..
Bab's, OF COURSE hens aren't happy when you take their eggs My God, that's instinct, when my little ones laid clutches they were adorable, but during the periods they were doing the "mommy" thing, you DID NOT reach over to touch them, they'd be all puffed up with their feathers ruffled warming the eggs, rotating them turning them slightly with their beak about every twenty minutes (watching how instinctual traits work is about the closest I've ever come to believing there might be a God)... but if you put a hand in the cage when they had a clutch they were sitting on, they'd start to rock (adrenaline starts pumping), and the beeks would open hissing, then they'd charge your hand and nip.... It's the maternal instinct, they are supposed to protect their babies.

It wasn't a hawk she hit, it turned out to be a pigeon by mistake. At least it has a happy ending!!

I don't want to see your darned old pics anyway....You probably bought some flea bitten critter that is going to tear up the house and yard and poop all over everything, so don't expect me to say 'Oh, how cute!'....I'd probably stomp it if I had the chance.

I know Keith, but if she thought it was a Hawk, I can understand her concern. Glad it ended up OK, but mistaking a pigeon for a hawk ? I hope she doesn't go to pet the cute pudgy huge black possum and the wobbly little black babies following the mother Opussom.

UNLESS, she bought a chinchilla !
Seriously, she probably bought a sheep !
