Been busy but finally found time to come and read the interesting comments that are appearing on this thread.
Steven…I notice you are starting to chat with yourself, and some of your comments….ooooooh yeah…so thought I would come in and visit with ya and also bring the topic back on line..
Comment by Billy ....hi cinder truth is i'm not shy at all in front of people, lord knows i use to be early on, but a few drinks cured that....
Billy, I am happy to hear you were just kidding about being shy, a talent such as your’s should be heard by many.
Comment by Billy….my very first time to get up in front of a crowd was tuff, but i had a few drinks, and i knew i could sing, so i took the what the heill i can do this....then after that i was fine, thats one reason i got out of music, no spark left, no excitement.
Don’t understand why you lost your spark and the excitement to sing in public though?? Everytime I sing in public I find it invigorating, a real high! I never thought it was something one could lose because of overuse.
Comment by Sheree....Hi Cindy! Great topic! Having met me I'm sure you know I'm a shy person.
Hi Sheree  It was so nice to meet you in person at the KSK Fling. ..Yes, I had noticed you seemed a bit shy. You are such a talented singer, I hope some of the suggestions so far on here or maybe some coming up will be able to help you overcome your shyness so you can feel comfortable when you perform.
Comment by Crystal....for me, I'm not nervous about people HEARING me sing, I'm shy about people SEEING me sing! !
Comment by Charmin…. And like Crystal, I don't like to be looked at when I sing. I much prefer a dark setting, with a dance floor, where I'm not the only thing people have to focus on
You people have to remember that when we get up on stage, it is for the purpose of letting others hear what we’ve got, “singing wise”. We are not up there to be judged on our looks. Do looks play a part? Yes, they can but they’re a secondary thing . The singing takes priority. Let’s say, a beautiful woman or some gorgeous guy gets up to sing, sure people will be impressed for a few moments…but if this person CAN’T SING, they will lose the attention of the audience very quickly. I have seen it happen often. In comparison to someone, who maybe isn’t as nice looking….BUT..can sing like a pro…it’s these people that can bring the roof down on the place with applause.
I’m thinking some ways to possibly overcome this uncomfortable feeling when people look at you, would be to build up one’s confidence in oneself by:
Dressing up in the clothes you know fit you real well and you are comfortable in. Pay special attention to your grooming. To cut to the point… making yourself look as good as you possibly can. If you feel good about the way you look, you will have more confidence to get up there and not be worried about your appearance while you are singing.
Another topic mentioned was, being worried about possibly messing up on a song…etc.. To prevent this from happening, I would advise choosing songs that you know you can ace, the ones you feel totally at ease with. I suggest practicing each song many times over the same day you intend to go out to karaoke. Practice them until you are able to sing them with out barely looking at the monitor. Even throw in a few moves while you are singing. How do you think the professionals do it? They practice, practice, practice, “both singing and moves”. It doesn’t happen naturally, they have to work very hard at it. And if you really want to perform in public and feel in control, you will have to also.
Also, taking in quite a few really deep breaths before going up to sing can help a lot. It relaxes you and help get your lungs prepared for singing. Breathing is a very big part of proper singing.
Hoping some of these suggestions can help someone.
