One night when I was at karaoke this guy came in with a guitar on his back at the end of the night wearing a cowboy hat, name was Jeff. He got up and sang Cold One Comin On by Montgomery Gentry and stunned everyone. I never saw him set foot in there again....disappointing really. :(

I was VERY impressed with all the singers in our group on Friday! IMHO, that was the best group effort at "Bohemian Rhapsody" I've EVER heard!!

I've been on both ends of this question.
A couple of months ago my partner and I did a karaoke show at a local bar. The crowd was mostly in their 50's plus. We had "salted the mine" by bringing with us 2 young ladies who can sing your socks off by themselves and are even better together.
I called a name on a slip and out of the crowd came a short slender guy who would never be noticed if he was walking down the street. He had a killer voice and great presence. He did country, r&B, and standards—he even did a great version of Mack the Knife.
We didn't give him extra turns but we did make sure that he got on as often as we could arrange without being unfair. He really turned the crowd on. Later I found out that no one had ever seen him before. He was there with his mother who was in town visiting and who had wanted to go out for a few drinks.
On the other side of things, I was out with a friend of mine one night at a karaoke show run by a KJ he knows. The guys equipment isn't much, his song selection is nothing to write home about and he's not very good at being a KJ. But he's a nice guy so we decided to show some support. There weren't many singers there so there were lots of opportunity for those who wanted to sing.
My friend has a terrific voice—especially for old 50s-60's country stuff but his sense of rythm is off and he has trouble starting each line on the beat. A lot of people make fun of him and don't think he can sing. In actuality if I can teach him to feel the rythm of the music better he will be quite good.
I'm a rock & roller from the 60s. I'm not the best singer in the world but I believe I have a pretty good idea of what I can do that is acceptable and the stuff I need to stay far away from. Anyway, the KJ that night doesn't like my friend's singing. But he does like mine. We both took up a stack of slips. I probably ended up singing twice the number of songs my friend did even though we submitted roughly the same number of slips. After a while it got embarrassing. And my friend felt bad about it.
The lesson I learned that night was that one of a KJs most important jobs is to be fair.

I find you can help people with this problem by having them tap their feet to the beat.

I've tried everything I can think of. The odd thing is that he does tap his foot. That's not the problem. He can keep the beat. And, I may have expressed this poorly originally, he sings in rhythm—but it's often a few beats behind where the music is.
My best guess is that he's not truly listening to the music. So I've been trying to get him to listen more. He used to play guitar so I though he should be able to at least identify chord changes. But he never played by ear so that doesn't seem to be working either.
He does sing a few songs where he is right on it and there are no problems. So I thought that maybe it was just stuff he wasn't too familiar with. But that doesn't seem to be the case because now I've heard him sing the same songs a number of times and he seems to sing them the same way each time.
I even tried recording him so he could see where he's getting behind. I can't say that he was always able to identify that when I played the song back for him.
Over the past month we've been working on this and I have seen some improvement but he's still got a long long way to go.

Does he do this with normal speach (pause?)
Did he studder as a kid?

Nope. He speaks normally. As far as I can tell the only abnormal part of his childhood was being born and raised in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. "Uppers" just aren't right in general.

Now you know why he was a Guitarist and not a lead vocalist LOL Actually a lot of people have trouble with timing when it comes to lead vocals I sometimes yell out 1,2,3,4 it helps sometimes but some people have their own timing in their head and it won't change.
