At the karaoke bar I go to, there's this old fashioned phone booth at the back of the bar.... I go stand behind it when I sing (thank god for cordless mics)

Nah, she's not shy, she's a Superwoman in real life and she needs to be near a phone booth just incase she has to change her costume. :)

Sorry about your team losing the first game and losing your starting goalie. I know he got you to finals but such a bad luck on the injury. I hope they do ok with a backup goalie.

LMFAO!!! Yah.... superwoman costume!! ROFL!!

as for our goalie......... What a heartbreaker...... as for the game TONIGHT..... I don't wanna talk about it  :grumble:

First and fore most being shy is a natural act/feeling. This a nature defence mechanism. Some people get over it earlier in their life some don't. To hide the fact that you have butterfly in the tummy is not going to help.

Stage fright or fear of being in front of a large gathering of people and being the focus of attention is common even among the pro. Tomost of this pros the difficult part is the first few min.

To me I have no problem faceing a large crowd when I have to deliver a technical paper. This is because I prepare it well and know the stuff well. Singing to the same crowd will kill me tho LMAO.  See, the point is I know for fact I don't sing well and have little confidence doing it. If I am a good singer then I will not have that fear.

I don't like singing on a stage.    I've done it in a band.   When you sing on a stage by your self and know that if you screw up you're all alone.   It's different.     Plus most people can be excellent singers, but they don't have any stage presence.     They don't know the moves, to scared to move frozen in place.    I'm shy about it.   If I'm standing behind the table, I'll sing up a storm.    My comfort zone.    I'll do it in front of a crowd but I don't have the stage presence.    I'm not exactly David Lee Roth, more like Barry Manilow on sleeping pills.    Sing good, look pretty and stand still.     LMAO

I'm amazed that I ever got up in front of a live audience to sing...but a couple of my friends would aways go up with me at first and that helped a LOT...just having some friendly support LOL  Now I have no problems...although I'm always nervous for the first song or two I sing...which is why I usually sing songs I'm comfortable with first.

As for singing at home with my friends...well heck I'll do that anytime...all my friends already know I'm nutty... :dancin:

For some reason performing has never been a problem for me.  The size of the audience doesn't seem to matter.  The truth is I enjoy performing and if even one person is listening my energy level goes sky high.

Like some of the rest of you I am fairly shy when I'm not performing.  For those of you who are not bothered by that it can be terrifying.  Put me in front of a mic and 1,000 people, whether it's giving a speech or singing, and I'm just fine.  But stick me at a dinner table with 4 or 5 people that I don't know (especially if one of them is a very attractive woman) and I freeze up.

My problem with karaoke performances is that I've been a singer/guitar player for 40 years.  If I don't have my guitar in front of me I don't know what to do with my hands.  The other thing is that when I'm with a band there 3 or 4 other people around me.  That's just more comfortable.  And we can play off each other which relaxes me too.

I am just now starting to feel comfortable singing without my guitar and it took quite a while for that to happen.

If I'm singing karaoke a lot of what I'm feeling comes from how confident I am about the song I'm singing.  For the most part I try to avoid singing anything I'm not really familiar with.  I don't want to put myself in a situation where I realize, too late, that I can't hit that one note that is beyond my vocal range.  So whatever I sing I try to know it well enough that I don't have to worry about looking at the words.  That seems to help me—I guess it's because that way there are no suprises.

the first couple of times i sang karaoke i refused to get out of my chair.  the kj finally got me up front; now they can't get me to sit down. remember public speaking is the number one fear.  so, if you're afraid to speak in public then there's a darn good chance you're not going to get up and sing.  i suggest getting up to sing at the end of the night or at the start show when there is fewer people around.  and crystal, if you're hiding behind a phone booth then some of the rest of us shouldn't even pick up a mic.

People like crutches, be it a guitar, mike stand, piano, KJ table, a drink in your hand, someone standing beside you.....   Some thing to hide some of our nakedness.     A little something to lean on.   Doesn't mean your not talented, just means you need a little more confidence.

Very true observation Steven. (Steven the II, Steven the III???)   I'm shy onstage... but  I am 100% confident in the kitchen, I know just what to use to make his mouth start watering and make him go nuts with waiting.  Never would I feel shy or inhibited in the kitchen. That's cause men are weaklings, and woman have all the confidence they need in that area.

I believe women are emotionally stronger in many ways. I also believe a reason for this is that women are generally more accepting of "what is", where-by men tend to fight natural processes.  We also live in a culture that allows women from a younger age to experience emotion with less judgement.  I think females are VERY often more experienced at "feeling" and accepting of emotional processes by the time they reach adulthood, many males learn to "fear" feeling, and sensation.  I think most women are more in tuned to their bodies, and likely don't try to control that which they have no control of as much as males do... I think MANY of their concerns are less self-centered, and for the most part I believe women are more socially adaptable by the time they reach "adulthood"..  Which of course is just in time for them to become strippers, and kinky Dom's !!
