Still Santana

http://music.aol.com/network_live/conce ... n_rio/live

There playing the concert over and over...  What kind've heads does that drummer use !!! Dang,  he beats the %&#$*  out've them, and doesn't even seem to scuff them.  I thought Dennis Chambers was a jazz drummer,  (well with the exception of Steely Dan 10 years ago)... Funkadelics, Scofield, McGlaughlan, and a few others,  now he's with Santana ?   The guy's amazing.

Dear Mr. Dylan,

Happy 65th birthday.  Are you aware that as a senior citizen you can now take free college level music courses at your local community college ?  I've heard the local community colleges in most locations offer excellent rudimentary "ear training" classes.  This way you can begin to learn how to sing.. You're never too old to learn something new ! (If you want a critique, I better send it to you in private)

The curse on the Grateful Dead keyboardists continues.  Vince Welnick originally from The Tubes but most recently the Grateful Dead has died at age 51.

from CNN:
Welnick was the last in a long line of Grateful Dead keyboardists, several of whom died prematurely, leading some of the group's fans to conclude that the position came with a curse. Welnick had replaced Brent Mydland, who died of a drug overdose in 1990. Mydland had followed Keith Godchaux, who died in a car crash shortly after leaving the band. And Godchaux had replaced the band's original keyboard player, Ron "Pigpen" McKernan, who died at age 27 in 1973.

OK,  I won't take the gig.  I wish all my decisions were this easy !

I suppose being "socially active" in the 60''s & 70's/ indulging in the "ways" of that time period put odd's against reaching 50 on many of us who lived the hippy-esque type existence of "sex, drugs, and rock and roll" (with very little else in between). The body is pretty strong at around 18-30...  but shortly after that there's a price to pay.  While the hot engine burns just about anything, if it's not maintained it burns out before it's average life-expectancy.

Billy Preston, a great keyboardist and singer, passed away today.  He had a good solo career and was known as the "fifth Beatle" on the Beatles "Let It Be" album and movie.  Here's a story from CNN.com ---

I have something interesting.  Most middle-aged musicians will remember
"Mike Mathews",  Big Muff,  Freedom Amp, Worked with Hendrix. etc.

I hope this comes out.

this is going to take some work... I scanned a world business news article, converted it from TIG file to JPG... It's not showing up here....

Mike Mathews was involved in the original Electro-Harmonix company (i.e.'big muff")?  Where does he work these days?
If the Russian tube company gets bought out, tube amp owners are in for a long wait and/or hefty price increases!

He formed/founded electro-harmonix, was the president.   I guess he's living and working in Russia   ,  and the russian :family: is trying to get his business as collateral so they can "protect him"  :(    I wonder why he doesn't move over here, not sure what that would entail... too costly a move ?   Not possible to transfer the  business ?  Dunno..  My inclination would be TRY to get out've Russia, but I know nothing about international business aspects, etc.  Matthews was no dummy be any stretch of the imagination, got his Masters from Cornell U.  Produced a few big names in the 60's,  was a decent keyboardist (and made a few synths)... VERY bright innovative guy.  As to why he wanted to live in Russia ?   Dunno.. Was he also a big name behind "Sovtek" ?   Not sure.  Used HIS marketing skill and funds to keep the company going well after the decline in the interest in tube technology, and now that the company is big,  Russia wants it ??????   Only three countries produced vacuum tubes didn't they ?   and we weren't one of them. China, Russia, and Yugoslavia.

Is it possible that Russia holds a patent that doesn't allow him to manufacture in any other country ?  So while HE might be a key figure in the tube market today, and might've had the skill to bail out a company that wouldn't have done as well without him recently,  he likely doesn't hold the technology patents.  So he'd likely never escape RUssia with his Tube making stuff    They have ways of getting him to stay you know !

Thanks for going through the whole article for me Steven.  I forgot how to read about five years ago -- been faking it ever since.  LOL  I wonder who first came up with the design for common tubes?  12AX7's,  6L6's 12AT7's. I don't remember.  I should still know this stuff!

Some American variants of the 12AX7:

12AD7 (october 10, 1955 - 225ma heater - low hum)
12AT7 (May 20, 1947, dual 6AB4 ɥ62 - gain of 60)
12AU7 (October 18, 1946 dual 6C4 ɥ17 gain of 19)
12AV7 (February 14, 1950 - dual 6BC4 ɥ48 gain of 41)
12AX7 (September 25, 1947 - minature 6SL7 ɥ100 gain of 100)
12AY7 (december 7 1948 - ɥ48 gain of 45 for audio peramp use)
12AZ7 (March 2, 1951 225ma heater, ɥ 60)
12DT7 (ɥ100)
12DF7 (ɥ100 low microphonics)

The 6L6-GC came later, around 1959. similarly the 7027 is a US (possibly Japanese) 6L6-GC, sometimes with a taller bulb, with two extra pins. (pins 5 & 6 are connected together, as are pins 1 & 4. That made the switch of 6L6's in earlier Ampeg's brutal

I don't see why a US company couldn't begin making tubes again.  Obviously there's a limited market, but if you planned it out just right I think you could do OK.

I guess I'm confused Don, because weren't Sylvania tubes at one point made in the US anyway ?   Same with Motorola, who made their tubes ? and GE ??

btw, we also lost Desmond Dekker two weeks ago... The one who brought ska, and rock steady into the states with his song "The Israelites" in 1965....

They get up every morning for bread sir,
so that every mouth can eat
poor me,  Israelites.

My wife and children left me, she said
Darling, I was only yours to be seen
poor me, Israelites

Do you have any recording programs on your comp like Cool Edit Pro, Audacity,
anything?  It'd be fun to colaborate by playing on and recording some songs with you, Charmin or whoever else.  Take advantage of technology to do some trans-American recording sessions.  :)
