I know alot of KJs prefer one slip turned in at a time, but personally I prefer it if they turn in two or three (or so on) I like having at least 2 rotations lined up...

I'll take as many slips as you'll give me. I'd rather take them all at once than have them bother me every time they have a new one. I have a huge window sill right behind me. I simple lay them all out in order. People can come up and see when they sing next this way. Most of my regulars keep an on going list with me , so they
don't fill out slips. The only problem I have is if I open the window and it's windy. hahahahahha Then I have to weight down the slips so they don't blow away.

Pretty basic rules here ....

1) Always have FUN & Applaud the efforts of everyone that gets up to sing.  (Applause can be crutial to a newbie .... always be sure to cheer the crowd)

2) Respect the books & equipment, not to mention other singers.  You break it, you bought it or be banned for life.

3) Duets take the turn of one of them in the rotation, I let them choose which ... usually the one reguesting to sing the song.

4) KJ reserves the right to refuse, interrupt and/or stop any music and/or singer found to be offensive.

5) When you turn in your requests you are added to the rotation.  The first time thru the rotation everyone is added to the end of the list. After the 1st rotation I add new singers usually 3 singers down the line from when they handed me the request slip, this way they can sing their first song with in about 15 minutes ... then normal rotation after that.

As far as how many slips they can turn in .... I have table tents that say sing one bring one, but I don't have a problem with them bringing more as long as they understand that they will be singing them in the order they have them in.  I only have one that likes to turn in a stack then wants to change the song everytime she comes up to sing .... the last time I handed her back all her slips and told her sing one bring one.

Last but not least ... FINAL & MOST IMPORTANT RULE!!!!

NO ONE LEAVES WITHOUT A HUG OR A HANDSHAKE!

Why the rule "one song at a time"?
If there is a rotation and a persone give u his 4 songs..why not stack them up?

I'm not criticizing the rule..just wondering.

Main reason being is people that put in multiple slips EXPECT to be able to sing all those songs & when someone gives a stack of slips, i'm not going to go through them all to see which songs they have up when someone else might put in a song that they have in their 'stack'.  It just helps eliminate some whining that people can give.

The only time it bugs me is when they hand me ten slips and I know they will only get to sing maybe 2 of them. I have a guy who does this everytime he comes in. I wish he'd get the clue that there isn't that much time in a night. Dah

That would be a secondary reason.  But even then you can go to their table after they leave & see 20 slips filled out like they are going to sing them all.

That's why I tell them to make a list on the back of the slip.   Save my paper.

Talking about saving paper.   I thought I would save money & recycle my old song books.    So I ran the book pages through my copier and made the slips on the blank backside.    People went crazy.   Started calling me cheap.   Thought I was going out of business.    Couldn't afford to buy new paper.  Everyone made fun.    It wasn't worth the ridicule.   I just use them to start the fireplace now.

So much for the tree huggers.

We have a few people that like to hand in three or four slips at once.  That's fine... as long as they realize that they will only sing as many songs as there are rotations.  Also.... I TRY to look them over to avoid duplicate submissions, but.. occasionally some get past me.  When that happens... I just let the person know that I've made a mistake, and ask them for another slip.  RARELY do I get a hassle.. and if I do .. I just continue to say I'm sorry... and take the blame.  Part of the reason that we prefer sing one-bring one... is because ... we pull the disc (not using a computerized system, here) ... when the slip is submitted for that round.  each slip sits on top of the disc... so when its time to load ... we just move the stack of discs from the assistant's seat (mine) to the KJ's seat.  Once the singer has sung.. I (assistant) have the next slip in hand... the KJ hands me the slip(s) they've already sung.. the new slip is paperclipped to top of the slips... and the disc is pulled and ready for the next rotation.  If a disc is in use ... or already in the stack.... then the slips go into the stack face up.  If a slip is not turned in .. the slips are placed face down in the stack ... letting us know that the singer has either opted out of the next round ... OR ... (even though we discourage it) .. will turn a slip in before it is his/her turn to sing again.  What I hate (because of the way we keep slips organized) is when someone gives me a slip ... then comes back every 10 minutes or so ... and hands me slips for future rounds.  This creates an additional pile of slips to try to keep organized.  Grrrrrrrrrr!!  Often.. I just say ... keep this slip 'till you are called to sing.. then give it to me. But..... when it get really busy ... sometimes they just 'drop off the slip' ... while I am working with someone else.

Oh well.... I still say... Sing one-Bring one... is best.

LOL  .. speaking of Strip Karaoke... has anyone ever been asked to provide a strip karaoke show?  We haven't... but my "hubby" keeps hoping!!

If we ever did THAT gig... I would opt out of my turn in the rotation ...

Please take a few moments to familiarize yourself with our rules...

•You can turn in as many song requests as you’d like, just be aware that if you do this Big Mike will play them in the order that HE wants, and there is no guarantee that they will all be played.  If you want to be sure to sing a certain song your next time up, then just turn in one slip and when you come up to sing bring your next one.

•Singing with Big Mike is like getting on a ride at an amusement park.  When you turn in your song slip you get in at the end of the line.  After you finish singing, your next slip goes to the end of the line to wait for your next turn.

•Singing as part of a duet or a group will count as one turn for each person.  If Bill signs up to sing a duet with Joe and one with Mary, either Joe or Mary will be waiting quite a while since Bill can only sing once per rotation.  The other person can not hold a spot in line for Bill.  If Bill, Mary and Joe also turned in solo songs, they will be played first so that all three can get in the rotation.

•Anyone discovered submitting slips under a different name to jump the line will be removed from the rotation & not allowed to sing for the rest of the night!

•Please be courteous to all performers.  Please applaud after each and every singer.

•Rudeness will not be tolerated!  Give the same respect to performers as you would like to see for yourself.  Getting up to sing in front of people can be very intimidating if the crowd isn't encouraging.

•If a dance floor is available, make full use of it.  There are many varieties of dance music on karaoke, and we love to see people dancing to the songs we sing!

•At times a rotation may get a little long.  PLEASE BE PATIENT.  Your turn will eventually come.  If you ABSOLUTELY CAN NOT WAIT, see me for a “Bump Me Up” application.

•The most important thing to remember is we are all out to have fun.  Either singing or just listening, please support the club you are in and PLEASE show your appreciation of your servers.  Remember if your favorite karaoke club does not make money, they will not continue the service for you!!

Wow!  Love some of these rules.  Practice most of them myself.  How do you guys and ladies deal with profanity on the mic?  Myself, will not tolerate it.  Once, your given a warning!  Next time, your done.
I respect the owners of the establishment, and the patrons who are there to sing, or there to listen.  Nowadays, with so many of these bars, lounges, etc. we play at having full menus, there seems to be many more children in them.  Do I like it?  Not in the bar after 10 PM, but not much you can do about it.  Therefore, one really has to be aware of his/her singers.  But even without the children, I prefer to not hear it.  Too many KJ's have gotten reputations for allowing it.  I never wanted to be one of them

You just have to #%$^%&^$%#@ write it in your %^*&*^$%#$ book and also tell them that if they ^*&^%$ swear again you're going to break their ^**&^%$$# neck.    If it continues have them tossed out on their *&%#.    That's the reason I %$@&%* took all of the %$$#%^&& songs out of my %^&%$#% book that have all of the really good &%$$#^% swear words in them.    LMAO

Patients is a GOD given virtue that I sometimes choose not to invoke.        I have had some bar owners tell some people to knock it off.    Every once in a while, two brain cells will collide inside their head.

There are some disc companies that clean up the songs, but most don't.   Even playing the clean version doesn't help.    Now you don't hear them on the radio like that, but they always want to exercise their &%$@3 swearing abilities on a  &%&$*% microphone, in $%#^^&& public, in front of %^#@& women and %&%#$# kids.

Just had a little &%$%#@ steam to $#&@* vent, I'm #@%#&$ OK now.

Well.... I guess we sorta feel this way ...

I personally, have no need to swear into a microphone.. even if the song I'm singing has profanity..I just have a moment where I don't sing anything.. or I substitute something that means the same.. but isn't profanity.

Now.... as for the singing customers.  Welllll.... as some of you have said.. it depends on the place that the show is being held.  When we do school events or events where children are present .. we screen which songs are allowed... and which artists.  Parents aren't always there to make the "call" .. so we simply eliminate the possibility that someone might sing something that their parents wouldn't want them to sing.. or that the parent of someone in the audience wouldn't want their kids to hear.

In a nightclub which is exclusively adults... if the song lyric has profanity.. we tolerate the profanity .. as it is written on the screen.  These are all adults... and while not all adults swear or like to hear it... I think all adults know that OTHER adults do swear.  We don't screen songs in a 21 + establishment... but as I said... we tolerate only what is on the screen.

Now ... we do have a few songs that are very popular ..... and although the lyrics have no profanity.. somehow.. the song (usually because of something seen in a movie) has taken on a "profanity verse" of sorts.  Mony Mony and Total Eclipse of the Heart .. come to mind.... right ...   ?  Pretty hard not to allow a ROOM full of people to sing along with that particular refrain. But again ... this is a room for 21+ only.

However.. if someone takes the microphone.. and begins to shout profanity ... The micro is shut off.... and the singer leaves the stage ... THAT is totally not acceptable or tolerated.

Overall though.. we really don't have a huge problem with "language" ... so to speak.  Surprising too .. 'cause we are a college town ... and many many of our singers are college aged.  But... to be honest... most of the college kids are singing the songs from RENT these days....over EMINEM and LIMP BIZKIT, thank goodness!!

 ... yup... toughest seat in the house!

My job consists of:
1.  maintaining all bookkeeping .... all emails/correspondences, keep organized all bookings, payments.. etc.

2.  At the shows -- I set song catalogs at various tables, keep request slips/pencils available and plentiful, keep song slips from week to week for "the regulars" and pass them out as the singers arrive (collect them as they leave), accept all NEW song request slips, assist new singers with any questions they may have, accept slips/pull discs and get the next rotation ready for the KJ, chat and "hostess" with singers when I have a "lull", settle disputes/handle complaints, etc.., keep an eye on the singer...stage.. etc, for any "issues" that might occur, KJ for three- 10 minute breaks that the KJ takes to have a cig/use the bathroom, and of course, pick up all catalogs, unused slips and pencils at the end of the evening.  Oh yea, If it isn't a crazy busy night (less than 25 singers) I sing at the end of each round... however, rarely do I get more than one song a night .. 'cause we usually hit 25 singers during round 2.

The KJ gets the gigs, irons out the details, sets up and tears down the show, hosts the shows, and provides all the techi expertise .. which really IS the show.. in my opinion... so while I am "busier" .. he's got the bigger responsibility.
