It's about 225 miles to the canadian border from Portland straight up Interstate 5

Man talk about some beautiful country up north. Puget Sound in Washington and then Vancouver BC  Truly gods country up there.

If you saw Free Willy that is where they filmed the ocean and bay scenes...in the San Juan Islands and Puget Sound area.

The rest of it was filmed right here in Portland. I fact Keko "Willy" was in a special aquarium on the Oregon Coast for about 2 years before the transported him far north to set him free (in real life)

San Juan Island is a pretty artistic affluent area isn't it ?  Small population, small island ?

Actually a very large area. Literally hundreds of miles of shoreline and channels and coves. It is the number one yachting destination in the northwest. Amazing beauty and serenity to be viewed and enjoyed. I have alot of friends that take a month and go there. Some of them have been yachting there for 20 years and have only seen maybe 1/4 of the sights there are to see, and they go every summer for a month.

Here is a view of Mt. Hood from the west hills of Portland. This is a typical view here we also have an excellent view of Mt. St. Helens. On a clear day Mt Jefferson and Mt Rainer as well.

That's gorgeous Flipper !   How far would Mt Hood be in the distance from Portland ? Impossible to tell by looking

ADDED IN..

I found something FLipper

located only 75 kilometers east-southeast of Portland, Oregon.

(what's that, roughly about 50-60 miles) ???

It's about 55 miles to the base of the mountain. Very popular destination from Portland.

Thanks.    That's a beautiful view..  I wasn't aware Portland was that high an elevation.   I also didn't know that Hood was considered an "active" volcano.... Last time it errupted was 1865...  What's the Pacific ring of fire ??  ANy idea ?  Are the volcanic mountains on OUR pacific coast part of the "ring of fire" or volcano's included in that Pacific category of activity ?

That's gorgeous Flipper.   I was reading about Crater Lake a few weeks back out've curiousity too..... Something else that's fascinating.  That must be a gorgeous lake...  3rd deepest in the world ?  Volcano that's filled with water ?   From photo's I'd never have guessed it to be as large a lake as it is  7 miles in diameter roughly ????    ANyway,  the pacific NW is a beautiful area.  I thought San Juan Island itself wasn't a huge island... I was obviously wrong...  There are two Vancouvers correct ?  BC, and Washington ?

They are all considered active. Of course Mt St Helens blew its cork in 1980 and then again a couple of times since then. If I remember right the last time was 2 years ago I was driving down the Hwy on the way home from work and it blew about 25,000 feet in the air. Nothing like the blast in 1980. I was sitting in my house in east portland about 8:32 in the morning on May 18th and hear a loud bang and looked out my front window to see the massive blast. It was awesome to watch.

Steven, there's a whole series of mountains in Washington and Oregon that are potentially volcanic in nature.  Mt. Ranier, Mt. Adams, of course Mt. St. Helens, Mt. Hood, The Three Sisters mt's. Even a small Mt. in Portland, Mt. Tabor is potentially active (but very very unlikely). There's probably others I don't know of too.  Of course Yellowstone is considered a super volcano and if it went off in a big way, you could say good bye to a big sized chunk of the country for quite a while, but that's a whole different story.

I don't know how high up you think Portland is. Most of it isn't too high, around 50 to 100 ft.  The West Hills is maybe 500-650 ft. Then there's a few higher regions in SE Portland.

Crater lake is really neat as well there are areas of the lake bottom that thousands of feet deep yet the water is so pristine that you can see hundreds of feet deep.

It's about 225 miles south and central from here.

Volcano's are something that we New Englanders have never seen (for the most part), and aren't threatened with... Yet like most natural phenom,  I have an awed-fascination for these types of things.... Don't you folks also have rogue waves in your areas too ?  random huge waves that can be quite dangerous ?   When you saw the eruption, was it similar to what a person would see in "Krakatoa" meaning you see it blow, but at the same time you also see the molten magma running down the sides, and hear the constant rumbling ?   This past year with Mt St. Helen's.. (and I have it on Cam, I was watching...LOL) it just threatened eruption correct ? Didn't it actually blow at one point ?  I don't know what the distinction is between eruption, and threatening to erupt...  It did actually blow didn't it ?  There was magma flowing down the side I thought too... or was that two years ago ?

No serious lava flow. nothing fiery.  JUst lots of ash and steam and rock debrious.
There were lightening strike in all of these heavy clouds during the big blast.

Steven, do you have the link to the camera that the USGS has on St. Helen's?

Oh yeah it was definately a major eruption in 1980!  No molten lava to speak of...but it blew like 1/3 of the north east face of the mountain off. The debris and ash went like 50,000 feet in the air and darkened the sky with volcanic ash in the jet stream for hundreds of miles to the east.

btw...when those eruptions take place, especially if the thing shoots rock 5-6 miles up.... If you can actually see the eruption, aren't you also in danger of having a boulder fall on you ????  It's shooting some large stuff up there isn't it ? Look shooting cannon balls at an arc.... It's got to land someplace after traveling in the air, and likely the jet stream abit...

I just added a side note there.  It's the Yosemite that's the super volcano.  None of ours are.
