I heard that Steven! Didn't think I'd sneak in here on a saturday did ya? LOL
No, he didn't pinch my butt..... he was very nice, and ran a very fair rotation, and didn't give me any special treatment just cause he knows me from here....
I was nervous being at a new place for the first time..... and he is a very good KJ and does a good job at announcing & everything.... to make everyone feel at home there.
(It was that OTHER dang guy who kept pinching my butt!!) :dancin:
And..... thank you Kurt.

I had a young gal come in - she couldn't have been much older than 21.
Unbeleivable voice, she could sing top 40 songs like she was the oringinal singer.
She had a huge range and was as cute as a button.
I went and talked to her and told her I hoped she was doing something with her voice.
She said she tried out for American Idol twice, but never made it passed the 1st round. It just goes to show you they do pass by good talent on AI.

Hey Billy and all ... Yes, occasionally someone does just "appear" .... and WOWs the crowd.. and ME.
Actually.. we have a couple of regulars that sound like the gal Babs described. FANTASTIC singers. LOVE to see them walk in ... they add a LOT to a show!!
But... no..... we don't let them have "extra" turns. They go into the rotation .. just like the kid that can hardly read and sounds like his nose is plugged up...that comes to the show EVERY single time. Gotta stay fair... when you are the KJ .. even though you'd LIKE every singer to be fabulous... and be able to sing all night.... that isn't what we're paid to do.
I've often said to Perry .. who listens to many of the SS singers with me... that I'd LOVE to have the likes of you, Jeanne, Morgan, Luly, Jazzy, Chamjam, Charmin, Jason K ... and a slew of others (way too many to mention) sing at our show.
And again, Babs is right about a lot of very talented people not really getting the recognition they deserve for their talent. Many of YOU are examples of just that.

Sure! I've been to a few places where the talent is incredible! I'm pretty shy anyway. :read: I so admire people who go up on stage and just lose all of their inhibitions. I tend to stare at the monitor and not leave my comfort zone. :baby1:
I'll tell ya who puts on a great performance... both Joyce (cantstopsinging) and Rita (a10cgirl). I was so impressed with them... and so was the rest of the jaded L.A. crowd. They have great stage presence. And Mikey (dumbdrums) ROCKS the house!! :D I've seen quite a few that impress me... I need to take lessons from them dangit! :dancin:
Milo.... did you borrow my jeans again????

Of course. It's still a public performance IMO.. Whether the purpose is for fun or not.. If there's a foursome of golfers that are all pro's.... I don't want to be hacking around them... If there are semi-pro bowlers that score 200+ in the next lane, I don't want to be seen each time I get up having my ball roll down the gutter... Even in a game environment... When the "real players" are up there.. I don't want to be the bratty little wannabe nothing that appears as the pimple on the a$$ of progress. That's just how it can feel sometimes... In ANY venue, when the "big boys" get up to bat... I don't feel I belong... I feel my presence will "drag down the fun".... Same with singing amidst pro- quality singers.... I DON'T belong in that group. (well in the case of me singing, singing among anything that has ears, I'm just not that sadistic)

That's true of course Sheree, THAT would create a more competitive, uncomfortable environment that would defeat the purpose of what "bar entertainment" Karaoke is all about. Having fun, NOT getting rewarded because you are better, or excluded because you aren't as good. Favoritism creates more barriers, however I'm sure EVERYONE at one time or another feels.. "Too bad so-and-so can't hang onto the microphone, I really enjoyed hearing such talent".. We all feel and think certain things. I guess part of maturity is not acting on all our desires ALL the time, even though I can't stand that part of life LOL ...

Here was a solution to that problem however. A nearby bar had "Sunday" night pretty much allocated as "veteran" singers night. Sunday was slow, Just about 50 people tops.... MOST of them that showed were the older R&B, semi-pro retired Motown singers that had appreciations for Freddie Jackson, Sylistics, O'Jay's, Spinners, Commodores, and the sounds of the "70's"... There really was NO set rotation. People would get up and join others singing harmonies.....They did their own thing.... Once in awhile a youngster would show up, and people would let the kid sing his Pearl Jam stuff (which is still after the period many of us loved in music ballad)... Noone cared, there was PLENTY of time for everyone... At the same time. Pool, darts, and TV would be going... It was a relaxed atmosphere Sunday nights with no rigid rules...NOONE cared... It was like open mike night, and it was self-serve... The KJ didn't regulate things.... The best singers came out.... MOST just enjoyed listening, without participating in lieu of what was happening. There was a mutual respect and ALL got to know one-another. THe show ran itself. Of course at 48 (at the time) I was still one of the youngsters... I had no probs with that either ! Yet it wasn't uncommon for a person to sing a string of three or four songs. Most encouraged that.. There was plenty for everyone. One guy had a walker, noone expected him to get up and down from his barstool.. Noone was hurried to get up and sing.. Noone cared if they didn't get the chance.. It was just that kind of night.. It was rewarding mingling with such a crowd anyway... It was almost like being at a private party..
Blues and Jazz club open mike nights were like that as well.. When you walk into the venue, there's a tacit understanding of who's who on those particular nights... When the pro's get up that are very respected in the area... You must know your place... Assuming you have one.. There IS a pecking order on those nights, reason being the draw on those nights shifts from "rowdy fun", to "We want to have the talented singers have fun here, it's why we're here"... While it's not set up as a competitive atmosphere, in order for it not to become one there's just an element of maturity and respect ALL are expected to have... Etiquette I suppose during those nights ISN'T up to the lounges to enforce... It's one of the beauties of a more mature sophisticated environment.. Alcohol, and "bar fun" is no excuse for poor behaviour, immaturity or disrespect, in order to have some of the pro's appear, the atmosphere must remain conducive to them wanting too.. It's free entertainment for the bar, and audience too !! .. Some venues still have pro-nights.... I loved those nights. I met alot of talent. Sort've musicians night out...
THOSE nights, I would get up to sing.. Reason being, as the person on the 4th microphone, I did know the falsetto harmonies to the Stylistics and Commodores ballads... (as long as there were three other stronger vocalists I loved singing backup) LOL (I think they even turned my microphone on once or twice)
