To be honest Bab's.  I really haven't a clue.  Logic would dictate "Kat" because IMHO she's just a much better musician, performer, and she doesn't have the pitch probs Taylor has, she's alot more polished..  More of a natural.  Yet that doesn't mean she hasn't lost a popularity contest, and people would rather see someone like Taylor get a chance...  Additionally, as Don mentioned, or we touched on in a discussion in a parallel thread,  MAYBE the industry feel's Taylor is ALOT more trainable... (assuming votes really aren't the factor as to "who really wins"). Since I wouldn't bet anything on what might happen,  I won't vote..  It's anyones guess... I'd have lost if I was asked whether Elliot or Taylor would've been cut Wednesday.  THAT was tough for me to understand.

My opinion is just that.  There's no accounting for outcome when mainstream USA votes on something these days anyway :(

I may have phrased something wrong earlier.  What I meant to say was Kat, Taylor and Elliot could each put out a great CD working with the right producer.  All of them are flexible I think.  Now I wish I had saved last week's shows because I don't recall Taylor having serious pitch problems.  I remember Elliot having a pitch problem on one song.  If Taylor had problems on Wednesday night then I wouldn't know because i just forwarded straight to the results.

But anyway, I think Kat is a more trained singer.  She has a wider range and can domore female vocal styles.  Taylor has more fun with his songs and he's got soul. If that's what you're after then Taylor is the guy.

This is a real tough choice because they are such different singers.  But I'll go with Katharine.  I think she needs to stabilize her talents from song to song a little better though. I get the feeling she's susceptible to making errors under pressure -- but you wouldn't have noticed that from "Somewhere Over The Rainbow".  Maybe if she just does material that she knows well and likes, things will be just fine.  Where's Amanda (Strmbreez)?  She could give some good constructive criticism of Kathrine.

I'm on a different computer now listening to Chris thru very good headphones at a louder volume, and he really is excellent.  Only problem I'd think those in the industry might have, is he has alot of "others" sounds, and qualities.  Yet perhaps no sound of his own that others feel could be turned into something unique.  But that's a guess..  I haven't heard full songs,  just bits and pieces of segments.   When I heard Elliot he nailed pitch,  yet wednesday night Taylor's pitch wasn't the problem, I though his dynamics weren't tasteful, he was just generally very uninteresting IMHO, bland.. On a few other songs he get's quite sloppy IMHO..  Not "seriously" off Don,  just off enough for me to find it grating.  I feel he's trying to run, but he's not good enough at walking yet to undertake all the "frills" and win any races..he's trying to enter. He has interesting idea's, but he's really sloppy IMHO.. Now from what many have said, Elliot did blow a few songs pretty badly, yet since I can't reference past shows,  I suppose I'm not a fair judge. Wednesday's performance I gave to Elliot,  yet that say's nothing about other live performances, I missed them.

I just feel that Taylor is the least polished out've the 4.. Yet perhaps polished isn't what people look for. While Chris is excellent at what he does, I don't know what the industry is looking for now, I've never been one to innovate. If they want someone who's capable of producing more of a vibrant, exciting style in a hybrid style, they'd want Katherine likely... Especially if the trend is more country/R&B and they want someone who can really radiate energy, and sing with her own "real heart", To me, SHE is the most soulful.  Kathryn to me can cover alot of styles.  Chris, Elliot, and Taylor might be too passe (or boring to some) that want more than ballad singers. They don't radiate the energy that Kat radiates IMHO, She just has alot more "real heart" of her own. (to my ear at least)...  Again,  I have only heard them all do one complete song, and little fragments of others.  Wednesday night I was least impressed with Kat,  Listening to all her other material, from what I can hear, whatever she does, she does tastefully.   More polished and versatile...Yet is that important ?  Dunno...

It's tough Don, because they are all "good enough" when we look at what's big today, and has become big in past years... It's anyones guess, since what it really does come down to at this level is personal preferences. When I listen to partial clips I don't watch them, I just listen to them, as if I heard these singers for the first time on speakers.  I try to decide who sounds the best to me without looking at them.

The reason I find judging this whole AI thing difficult is because I (and I think others)
shift our focus between 1: What the industry might like.  2: What we envision the average American might like and 3: What we personally like.

The song that Elliot was sharp on especially from the first chorus on was "What You Won't Do".  You can hear it again here.   http://www.americanidol.com/videos/?vid=381  Taylor can be a real ham but I just think he's more uninhibited on stage.Maybe that makes him seem at times less tasteful or graceful.  He can be like a bull in a china shop.  But all that can be toned down and polished.  He has to take it down a notch or two where others have to take it up a notch.

I will still vote for Katherine I guess because she is really good in general and traditionally what the "industry opinion" would most likely go for.  So if the industry is the  over-riding rule of thumb, then that's who should get it. She does the accepted things at the right time.  But that doesn't really make her more interesting, just more appropriate.

Once again, they're all good but for different reasons.  You just have to pick your favorite reason!  LOL

Don,

Have you heard Elliot do Jazz standards, or his own composition that's on his CD ? Did you hear him Wednesday ?

In the past years, I picked Kelly and Carrie .... but prefered Clay over Ruben, and I am NOT a fan and never have been, of Fantasia at ALL.  And in each contest... it could have gone to the runner up and probably 1/2 of America would have moaned.... just the other half.  At this level ..... and actually once they get it down to three ... all of them are good enough to win it all.. it just depends on what "image" they want to put out there this year.  I was NOT a Chris fan at all... and quite frankly I thought he was the right one to go .. when he did.  He'll do fine .... maybe even better now ... with all the hype about things being unfair/shocking.

I like Catherine .... and if the industry is looking for someone to hit the pop scene again ... she seems to be the more marketable choice.   I am not adverse to Taylor .. but I just don't think he's gonna have the "stay" power that someone like Catherine will have ... once the competition is over.  I actually liked Elliot's soulful stuff .... and *personally* I thought he was better than Taylor last week... But........

As far as voices... Both Taylor and Catherine have decent voices ... and both will definately improve .... once they decide how they will "put them out there".

So.. so far we've had a pop star, a soul star, a country star, and an R&B star.

I'm gonna guess if its adult contemporary they want to "niche" this year.. they'll give it to Taylor .... but I bet they'll shoot at pop again... given the higher level of success that Kelly and Clay have had in that genre.  Carrie's doing great in country ... but they've eliminated the "country" stylists already.

So.... my guess is Catherine ..... not that she's more talented overall than Taylor ... but in my opinion ... she'll be more marketable and have more 'stay' power... in the long run.

I still can't believe Chris got the boot because I thought he'd win it all.  Katherine has a great voice but Taylor's got such a fantastic stage presence--I think that'll carry him through to win.  Just goes to prove the best voice doesn't always win the contest--sound familiar?

Assuming the final pick is actually "The industry", or the show..

Would the consideration lean heavily towards what it's believed the individual can do in a studio ?  With less importance on aspects of stage presence and live performance ?  I'm wondering roughly on a percentage scale, how important
live performance ticket sales are vs album sales potential.

They might consider that in a live situation, or performance Taylor is alot more "Loveable", and Kat abit too developed as a live performer already, (or much too processed), so Taylor might sell more tickets at shows.  One never knows.  I suppose this is where it get's confusing.  Assuming they feel Kat is just too developed a performer in the live venue, and they want someone abit more rough around the edges...Taylor is just easier to connect with on the personal level. If the kids agree to travel anywhere in the world,  who know's what europe has in mind for them in terms of different style.

Sort've a scary thought to consider you have a kid that loves R&B, and more traditional styles, and they end up with a producer someplace in Germany that insists they shave their head, dye their scalp purple, and turn out something "punk".

I'm sorry, but I can't call that awkward stumbling around the stage and weird gyrations "stage presence". Plus, Taylor has a horrible habit of taking a good performance and then stomping it into the ground like a professional wrestler.

Katharine has revealed herseld to be spoiled brat and has made some nasty comments since last week.  She's not all that good either; she sounds like any number of girls who have had singing lessons since birth--all technique, no feeling.

I thought Chris was going to seriously injure his throat the way he sang--you could see the pain in his face. It was hard to watch for me.

Elliot is a genius of sorts as far as I could tell--did a variety of different genres (I'd like to see Taylor doing jazz for instance) and did them impeccably well.  He's the winner as far as a number of fans are concerned.  The show ended Wednesday night for me!

When I made the poll post I tried to add a 3rd option for people who just
don't give a hoot, but it didn't take. It was all the buzz at karaoke tonight,
people talking about who they thought would win. Michael your definately not
alone. When Chris got booted off a lot of people got so mad they aren't watching and
one of my best singers said the same thing you did.

Frankly, I'm tired of the whole show this year more than ever...the commercialism has reached an all time high. This is no way to run a singing competition.  For example: for some weeks, somewhat over the hill stars came on to basically plug their crummy CDs and the kids are forced to sing songs that may not have been the best fit for them.  Also, there is a lot of obvious "product placement" with some of the contestants given more air time and more visibility. I know Simon just can't WAIT to sign up Taylor--that's been blatantly obvious.  Taylor is fine for what he does, but he in NO WAY was the better singer.  Another tacky example is last week when it was announced Hugh Jackman met the performers and it was just an excuse to plug his new X-Men movie!

We all have our favorites; mine is definitely Elliot, but geez, sending Chris, Paris and Marisa home and leaving us with two "nothing special" singers stinks! I'm not watching the show, but I will be sitting front row when Elliot and the rest come to St. Paul this August.

The American Idol tours that take place after the winner is named draws BIG time, wherever it goes, Steve.  So... as far as the concern about live performance revenue goes.... they more than get that simply by virtue of the popularity of the tours.  I'd guess that when they are deciding on revenue based issues... its the sales of CD's that they are most focused on.  And... regarding stage presence... I have to agree that Taylor tends to go over the top a bit ... I find myself watching him move around more than listening to him sing... and often its more distracting and irritating than enjoyable (at least for me).  I just think Catherine will go further and for longer .... if she wins .... but who knows, Taylor may walk away with it all.  Nothing surprises me with a show like this...where some truly new talented kids are very exploited .... in the guise of stardom and riches.  I watch from the time they choose the top 5 'till they declare a winner ... 'cause I really like to hear people with good voices sing ... but I NEVER vote .... nor would I.

They both are terrible. Chris was my vote I have given up on American Idol.

Neither of this years finalist will make 1/2 the star of Kelly Clarkson the only true American Idol.

When that need to do it take it down to 5

Start a new season and take it to 5.

Put 2 seasons of 5 together and see who is the best out of that 10.

That would be so cool to see the top 2 of every season compete.
I doubt it would ever happen, but I'd tune in if it did.

It looks like Taylor is moving up in the poll. I was curious if we'd have
a tie. I think it will be really close this week.

I'm still holding out for Taylor...... not because I THINK he'll win...... but cause I WANT him to win. He's been my fav from day 1, when I started watching.

I guess I'll be satisfied with whomever wins.... they both deserve it... Taylor has just always been my favorite.
