Well yeah it's all staged. I have a feeling the singers really don't have much control over their wardrobe, hair styles, you name it. But that's really common to all of television isn't it?
Taylor is more suited to appeal to an older age group. I'd say 30's and 40's really.
Kat is really the singer that could cut across several age groups -- teens and all the way up to old guys like me.
I'd like to hear what really goes on within this show from some credible insider. We can all speculate all we want too but it's still only guesses. But the show is basically just eye and ear candy. A lot of the singers are very good though.

This show is very addictive! Up until the last few weeks, I had never even watched the show once. Now I think I am hooked. But like with baseball, I don't think I could watch the season all the way through from the start. I'd have to jump in closer to the finals (or the world series)! LOL

I'm such a cheater........ I just voted today!! LMAO
But, had I of been here sooner, I would have said Elliot anyhow, he was my next guess to go. (that's my story and I'm sticking to it) :D
Rigged or no, it's got my attention...... I'm as hooked on the show as anyone else now. Though, I am glad it's almost over, so I can quit being like a soap opera freak on tuesday and wednesday nights.

Quote: American Idol is produced by Fremantle North America which is owned by German Bertelsmann. Each contestant may sign a contract with one of Bertelsmann's many music labels because Bertelsmann owns half of Sony BMG.
Had it not been for 9/11, the show would have still been called Pop Idol, and may not have found as much success as it does today. The show is noted for helping promote and preserve American unity years upon the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 attacks. Since then, the show is highly regarded as a national fad or trend. The show won a 2005 Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Award for favorite television show. In that same year the show won the #1 spot on Nielsen Ratings for two years in a row, favored over the NBA Playoffs, Super Bowl, Grammy Awards, and the Olympics. The show also inspired other nations to produce their own variations and became the subject of numerous parodies. American Idol has produced successful recording artists who, had it not been for the show, would have never had the chance or opportunity to be recognized in the public spotlight.
It can even make me a star
Despite all I'm saying, it's ALOT better than all the violence on TV today. It's a nice show for kids IMHO... I won't watch it again. It gives them something to enjoy, and even allows them to realize that THEY TOO might someday get discovered !

Did you ever see the movie where they rigged a game show? They got caught giving the guy the answers to the questions, so he would win everytime. This was a true story and as far as I know after that happened there were strick guidelines and watch dogs for these kind of programs. These people on the show are making plenty of money. Why would they take the chance of getting caught and going to jail? I just don't see the motivation to rig the show. Are things done fairly - no. But I don't think there is anything illegal going on.
I guess what it comes down to is - In my mind it is fair enough. I enjoy the heck out of watching each week. I love the idea of someone having the chance to make it in this business that no one would have ever known about otherwise. who knows if we had AI sooner maybe it would be Charmin up there.
They are EXTREMELY tight with game shows. One of the WORST parts of the whole experience on Millionaire was tied into this. For starters, I was a West Coaster at that time, and we had to be in the hotel lobby at 6:45 am EASTERN...(3:45 am for me!!) And, needless to say, I had EXTREME difficulty sleeping the night before, so I was TIRED. We were not allowed to bring anything but ourselves and our clothes...and this included companions...no books, magazines, newspapers, phones, pagers...nothing that might potentially compromise the integrity of the game. My show was the second one to tape that day...and we didn't start taping until around 3pm. But, between all the caffeine I thought I'd need...and the adrenaline rush of "Hey, I'm here!!", I couldn't even catch a nap. So, it was HOURS AND HOURS of boredom, but I was still too excited.
We also had to have an escort from the show to go ANYWHERE...which, fortunately there was more than just me as a smoker in our group, so it wasn't too hard to get them to take us nicotine addicts out front occasionally. But as a side effect of all that caffeine, my kidneys decided to punch it into overdrive, and we even had to have an escort to go to the rest room, so I was asking for a potty break about every hour or so. In fact, I BEGGED for a break after the first contestant from our group was done...and, partially because it was a longish walk, and partially because I was wearing my dress blues (13 buttons on the flap on the front of the pants!!) I slid back into my seat in the Ring of Fire right as Regis was coming back from the break...and got the Fastest Fingers question that put me in the Hot Seat. And when I got done, I needed a bathroom and a cigarette...in that order!

STEVEN KAPLAN!!!
I may be a gramma soon, but I'll have you know I have NO intention of looking- or acting- like one anywhere in the near future!!
You just leave me out of that "old fart" commitee!! Ya hear? LOL
Though...... gawd, it would be cool to see a "Bluegrass Idol"...... they'd HAVE to raise the age limit on that one I imagine. Hey.....hmmm..... I'm gonna go write the producers of ABC & CBS with that idear.

It's all just for fun - no doubt - I don't take it that seriously
I love the debate on if it is rigged or not because I just don't see why they would really need to.
I worked karaoke last night, but we had the tv on to see who was being kicked off.
A lot of my regualrs are hooked on the show too. We all agreed it should have been Elliot. The one thing I have noticed is people either love Taylor or hate him. That might be his downfall. To much of a character can turn people off.
I was glad to find out I wasn't the only person who cried when Katherine sang over the rainbow. I thought it was so weird I had that reaction when it wasn't a sad song.
Again I think who ever does better next week will win. People won't take in consideration how well they did in the past, so Katherine will have to pull off another great song like over the rainbow or I think Taylor will win.

RATINGS !
The show has one priority, THE SHOW'S well-being. It's owned by the entertainment industry.
My guess is between the time Elliot found out he lost, and his exit song on the show a few days had passed. Simon said to him "You are the best singer I've seen on this show" (or something like that)... What we might not know, is Elliot already has contracts :) Remember, you don't have to win that show, to get the biggest contract.. He's been discovered, the kid had talent ! Yet maybe not in "pop 40"...

Yep
Did you catch that ?
"Our goal was to show the skeptics that WE weren't just another show that turned out talent, we were going to go a step beyond, and we did, we turn out stars"
something like that....
Did I mishear something, or did Simon commend Elliot on being "The best" vocalist he's seen on the show ?

Quote: This is the way I look at it Babs, and I might be incorrect, but a show that is spending millions per episode, and going thru such efforts, isn't going to take the chances of having one of those kids end up saying... "This sucks, you guys are all a bunch of idiots, I shoud've won", and then have the kid end up spitting at everyone. Think about it, how can they NOT have editing capabilities ? If you knew these kids, and they were open and honest with you, do you think they'd possibly say
There was one guy last season (I forget who it was) who refused to join them on the tour and was sued for breach of contract and actually had to pay a settlement to AI for not joining the tour for a year.
Also, you may remember earlier in this season, some of the contestants were complaining that they didn't get enough "face time" in the background segments. They know as well as we do that a big portion of what wins the contest is how they are protrayed in the background segments, where you really get to see their personality (edited for maximum effect, that is).
There was also the blunder they made where Chris acknowledged in his intro video that he was singing the band Live's version of Johnny Cash's "Walk the Line." Well they edited that part out of his intro video and everyone, including the judges, thought that he had made his own arrangement of the song. Of course the internet cried foul and they had to apologize, but it just goes to show how the image is everything and they are going to edit that background footage how the producers see fit to control each singer's public image...

Now if Elliot lost, would that release him from contract with BMG ? Or has he signed over to them for a period of time, and as we speak, he might be in a studio someplace doing a jazz album ? Or perhaps signing with Arista ?
Dave, in this type programming, do you also sign that you will not use your experience to write a book, advertise inside aspects, and take an oathe of confidentiality, which also includes a partial gag order ?

I belive the TOP 10 have to be under contract for the next year, cause they tour over the summer.
That's why Kelly Pickler got in trouble I think ..... for singing the National Anthem at her hometown school a couple weeks ago.

Who do they tour with ? Who set's up their gigs ? books them ?
Sounds nice, because in essence they ALL win :)
So in reality, anyone from within the top 10, might end up the biggest. The record company has a different agenda than the TV programming. LOL

I dunno, it's an AI thing, the top 10 make a cd, and they tour that summer. Should be able to "read all about it" on the AI site I guess. (??)
