For some reason I keep hitting the F key instead of the V key. I do
know vulgar is not fulgar. LMAO
I went back and was reading the posts and was laughing my butt off. I
can't beleive someone didn't say something. I tried to edit out most of them.

Plenty rap songs are out there that aren't pure gang, kill, negative. So no Beastie Boys are in your rotation? You can't Jump Around when someone plays House of Pain? And when the fellas are yelling "Yeah!!" "What!!" "Okay!!" ala Dave Chappelle's portrayl of Lil Jon, would they not pop when some one does Get Low (to da window- to da wall)? No one does Bust a Move or the Humpty Dance? And is Blondie's Rapture out of the books too (technically the first rap song on the radio)? Can some one Walk This Way with Aerosmith? But I would agree with Baby Got Back or Ice Ice Baby, I'm sick to death of those songs, but if a female has certain attributes and dances to the music, I can stand it for at least one more time.

Good call...in fact, here is the Neilson ratings of the most popular genres of music, by total album sales, in the US in 2005:
#1: R&B - 143,392,000 albums
#2: Alternative - 120,797,000 albums
#3: Rap - 75,327,000 albums
#4: Country- 75,062,000 albums
#5: Rock/Metal - 64,473,000 albums
#6: Gospel - 43,500,000 albums
#7: Latin - 35,907,000 albums
#8: Soundtracks - 22,849,000 albums
#9: Jazz - 17,139,000 albums
#10: Classical - 15,875,000 albums
Also, by digital album sales (legal online sales) here is the chart for 2005:
1. Rap
2. Dance/Club
3. Alternative Rock
4. R&B/Soul
5. Rock/Metal
6. Soundtracks
7. Country
8. Latin
9. World
10. Jazz
By radio play for 2005:

#2: R&B
#3: Rap
#4: Alternative
#5: Rock/Metal
#6: Latin
#7: Dance/Club
#8: Gospel

SO let me ask you....how many people are REALLY offended by rap music. I guess the other way of putting it is if you BAN rap music, how much of your possible customers are you chasing away?? The numbers don't lie!!!

Also, here is the breakdown of the top 10 selling albums of the year:
#1: Maria Carey - The Emancipation of Mimi - 4.9 million albums
#2: 50 Cent - The Massacre - 4.8 million albums
#3: Kelly Clarkson - Breakaway - 3.5 million albums
#4: Green Day - American Idiot - 3.4 million albums
#5: Black Eyed Peas - Monkey Business - 3 million albums
#6: Coldplay - X&Y - 2.6 million albums
#7: Rascall Flatts - Feels Like Today - 2.51 million albums
#8: Gwen Stephani - Love.Angel.Music.Baby - 2.5 million albums
#9: Kanye West - Late Registration - 2.4 million albums
#10: 50 Cent and the Game - Documentary - 2.2 million albums
Again, I play filler songs from 8 of those 10 albums (all but Coldplay and Rascal Flatts) because it is the POP music of today, and I certainly have 10 of 10 represented in my karaoke book.
I bet you play music from only one of these popular artists, Rascal Flatts. It may work for your bar, but wake up and realize that R&B and rap is the MAJORITY of today's most popular music...you just can't alienate that much of the population and appeal to the largest audience possible!!

From the time I started my karaoke business, I have always projected myself as a professional. No one around here comes close to me as far as that. I have always attracted a crowd that is more serious about karaoke and more talented than most. Not saying that this is a prerequisite to attend. I accept all talent levels with open arms. I do not fudge my rotation to accommodate or discriminate against anyone. I don't care what type of music they pick, from the book. There are over 9,000 one of a kind songs to pick from. Much more than most. I don't get, nor do I want the screaming drunk crowd. Haven't heard a Mariah Carey song in a long time. Being that she sold more albums than anyone else, you would think different. No 50 cent in my book or his brother 2 Bits. I don't want to cater to the 21 crowd. Too much pi** & vinager, trying to prove their manhood. Testosterone, I'm a man now, let's drink shots to see how fast we can get drunk kid stuff. They want to sing rap just to have an excuse to scream out all the swear words and sexual innuendos on the microphone. This to me shows a lack of respect for themselves and others. Would they do it if Mom was there? That's why I CHOOSE to edit my song books. I don't want that element dominating or intimidating the crowd. Not one bar I have ever played in has needed a paid bouncer. I practice crowd control to help the reputaion of the bar and myself. It keeps the patrons, the bar, myself and my equipment safe. It has been working just fine for 14 years, in August. I'll keep just keep repeating successful things. You are free to do as you wish. I do an all oldies karaoke on Sundays. Last night I had a full bar with 30 singers, everyone told me how much fun they had. Hmmm, and not one 50 center. 1/4 of the crowd is black. They don't even like or ask for that stuff. Everyone one of them would be more than welcome at my house and to sleep over if they wanted to. And I grew up in an all white town. Found out years later that some of our townfolk were "Kluckers" that used to burn crosses on the hill across the river from town. I remember seeing one once. Everyone gets along just fine, one big happy karaoke family. They all make it a point to genuinely shake my hand like a man, not that phoney "bro" s**t shake. It's just my point of veiw. Take what you can use and toss the rest. I'm very happy with my level of success.

You can't always knock the 21 age group I have a pile of them coming to my Friday night shows and most can't sing very well and a lot of them sing 50 cent and other rap songs from my book. No ones been killed LOL and no fights in 5 years from them. 5 fights have happened in that time but usually from the 40 or 50 age group at the end of the evening. As for the bar their extremely happy, they've had a bunch of $4000. + nights with the 21 year olds. So don't knock the age group or song style look at your receipts and crowd satisfaction. I've been doing this for 12 years now and have learned how to Go With The Flow!!!

I usually have an older crowd and yes they do get in fights. Come to think of it
my younger crowd doesn't get into fights.
Oh I guess you get idiots at any age, but with my experience my younger crowd is
more respectful. I notice they spend more money drinking, but tip less.
I really don't care how old they are as long as they're not giving me a hard time and respect the rotation. Of course the bar owner likes them because they spend more.

It's all good....I think we are talking about two different parts of the country here, and obviously what is good for business in one area does't always apply the same way in another area............for the same reason that David Hasselhoff is a multi-platinum recording artist in Germany.
It's all good...

It is so odd isn't it that Hasselhoff seems to be a joke here, but in other
countries he is this huge sex symbol singing star. Yuch!!

I am basing my statement on personal experience from my own karaokes and from the bar down the street that happens to be called "Big Dogs", no relation. Big dogs has at least one cop car near by almost all of the time. Not many over thirty in this bar. I drove past one night and they had 5 cop cars there for the big fight. There are other bars in the area that have a young crowd and I have heard about singers being harassed, being booed , having pop cans tossed at them, etc. I don't have a real problem with them until they get drunk and out of control. Which tends to happen when they gather in masses. You are right about the amount money they spend and the fact that they don't tip well. Yes there can be fights with any age group. I have some 21er's that are very respectful and do not cause problems. We talk and joke. But they tend to nurse the drinks or don't drink at all and they don't tip. Doesn't make the bartender want to see them. But the music they sing has caused some of my regulars to go elsewhere on my Thursday night. There's about 8 of them. And they have directly affected my crowd. I have been told by the regulars that they don't like being around them. That's the reason they don't come. It has not made the bar owner happy to have the people that spend more money, quit coming. Now one of the girls is totally punked, gothic. Black lip stick, 10 facial rings, Redish purple hair, Mostly wears black, 6' platforms, Peppy Longstocking stockings and she weights 250 lbs. She's a nice girl to talk to and she is friendly to everyone, but behind her back everyone gets freaked. She is not the reason I don't want a majority crowd of 21er's, it's their choice of music. I just like to keep the odds in my favor. My oldies night is going pretty good, if I had my way, I would only do oldies nights. Many more good vibes in the crowd. Mellow is good.

As long as I can sing about a man who turned his back to everyone until the day his wife got raped and then he fought the guys who raped her.
Or the song about a prisoner who went to a town in Nevada and murdered a guy because he just wanted to see the victim expire in front of his eyes.
Who also sung a song about a guy who murdered his almost-wife, and asking for one more round, because he killed his girl.
Or the song about a lady who was a victim of spousal abuse, so her and her friends murder the husband by poisoning his food and toss him into a lake to get rid of the body.
Or a song about a man who killed a guy in a town in Texas because the guy got fresh with the killer's eye candy, so the murderer ran out of town, but he was feeling frisky about the eye candy, so he came back in town, but the sheriffs shot him before he got to see her.
Or a lady who makes her daughter look Hooker-beautiful, so she can be picked up by a rich man.
As long as those songs are in the book, I'll have fun.

Do you know why I drink? To get drunk...
Do you know why I roll smoke? To get stoned....
Do you know why I live out the songs that I write about sex, drugs, and bar fights? To get laid....
It's just the way my pappy taught me to act...

Something that just happened on this site made me think about this.
It is your right as an American to do pretty much as you please, in the privacy of your own home, legally. This is dictated by our laws and freedoms of our wonderful country.
The discs, DVDs, Tapes, Movies you buy, that are unedited... were and are meant to be played in the privacy of your home. Where you set the standards for you and your kids listening and veiwing pleasure. Porn & the like has it's place behind closed doors. AWAY from the public. Playing it in your car could offend someone, because of the volume or content.
Public air waves, such as radio & TV are regulated in the interest of the general public. They do not play the raw, unedited versions of any song or program, in a free venue. Paid venues, like HBO or satalite radio (a.k.a. Howard Stern) are different matters. This web site is monitored in the interest of the general public, which by the way Mr. Web Guru, I fully understand and agree with. And could you shed any light on this subject from your knowledge?
You Mr./Miss KJ, may have the bar owners premission to play the unedited song versions and think, in your mind that it is cute or funny or whatever, but under the "Community Decency Standard" statutes drawn up differently by each individual community, you might be violating the law. Your show could be deemed as indecent or obscene. As such you or at least the bar owner might be legally held responsible. The bar owner is thinking about his cash register, not the law. Remember the clothing malfunction and the really big fine that went with it? The FCC failed to see the humor in it. Technically it could be considered that you are "broadcasting" over public air waves. They are regulated by the FCC. Another technicality, you don't have a broadcasting license. If they wanted more ammunition against you. This has nothing to do with piracy or copyright violations. Remember a bar is considered a public place. It's a FREE venue. You can not do as you please, in any public setting.
To avoid the possiblity of future legal repercussions, you just might want to rethink your postion on editing your song selection. All it will take is a compliant, lodged at the next town council meeting, about the "offensive" (not in my judgement, but maybe from a concerned parent or guardian) karaoke that So & So runs. It won't matter if it's after 10 o'clock or not. You and the bar owner could be inviting big fines and/or court action. You'll never work in that town again. Your reputation will be worse than Howards. Just a thought, do as you will.

Radio stations are all allowed by the FCC to broadcast cursing after 10 p.m. nationwide. Most of them do not do it because it is bad business (advertisers don't go for it), but they are certainly allowed.
Karaoke AND DJ music legally fall under the category of public performance for the sake of civil liberties, and with that designation it is protected by the first ammendment.
Cursing in itself is not a crime, but often if you get to the point where you are cursing profusely, you are usually committing a crime at the same time, like disorderly conduct. But notice it is called disorderly CONDUCT, not disorderly SPEECH. Conservative groups try to shut down bands and get music banned ALL THE TIME based on decency laws and ALWAYS lose out to the first amendment. Cities can have their own "codes of decency," but you certainly can not be prosecuted anywhere in this country just for cursing or playing music that curses. Arrested, maybe, but not prosecuted.
Vulgarity is protected by free speach whether you like it or not, A**hole (sorry, had to throw that in there for effect).
I can walk right up to anyone in public and call them whatever I want, as long as it is not a direct threat on their life or slander that results in monetary loss.
Which, speaking of, what are you so upset about, Big Dog? Nothing but negativity coming from you lately on all of your posts!!

I would hope the police would be more concerned about the drugs
being sold in bars and the drunks not driving. Let's face it all kinds of illegal things go
unchallenged in bars. My goodness how about flashers and mooners? In my bar they get kicked out never arrested. How about the bar fights? The only time I've seen the cops called is if someone is seriously hurt and needs an ambulance. How about gambling? There are very few bars that don't have strip cards and squares for superbowl.
How about betting on a pool game. It is a regular occurance in our bar to bet at least a buck a game.
Is it illegal to swear when singing, I don't know - will someone get arrested for it if it is - I seriously doubt it - at least not where I live

I fail to see where you think this most recent post was anger filled or malicious towards anyone. It was simply an very controlled, detailed observation about possibilties. I didn't offend anyone did I? If that post offended anyone, grow another layer of skin cells, sing two songs and call me in the morning. I'm offended that you were offended.
