hi there, new to the site and am looking for some help with home system.

started karaoke last year and bought a megastar cka-180 amplifier and megavox speakers at a local store.  i use my home theater marantz dvd player to play vcd's and karaoke dvd's (no cdg's) but the song selection is limited and i don't like switching discs in between songs especially after a few beers

i would like to set up a computer based system off my laptop, switch to cdg, and have read many pertinent listings here on this forum.  i'm planning on buying an external plextor and one of the recommended software systems, ie roxbox, mtu, karawin, karafun, to use as karaoke player and one of the ripping software like kjrip or audiograbber for downloading from disc.  is there a way to transfer my existing vcd/dvd collxn (~50 discs)?  the free kjrip doesn't seem to recognize the vcd and dvd files and haven't seen anything on this topic.

also found a product called "unify" which has a software and remote controlsystem from china, i think.  any experience or opinions on this system?  i downloaded the free trial and have had success with downloading vcd's but haven't tried dvd yet.

any info would be tremendously helpful.  also if there are any other useful links to learn more about the technical aspects that would be great too.

sorry for so many questions.
chris

KJrip was only written to load cdg's.   You'll find cdg's have a much better selection and you may only need a few of your vcd files as much of those songs if not all are available on cdg. VCD is easy to transport to hard drive.
place your vcd in your cdrom or dvd drive. go to the folder mpegav and copy the dat files to your song folder. They can be renamed using cdgautoname.

Wouldn't the DVD be a much better video quality?

Me thinks the site was taken donw.  I saw it ad it was a site that was offering instructions on how to "never pay for another CDG".  Probably just a scam to get some money, or may have been instructions on how to illegaly download and burn karaoke songs.  Either way, thank god it is gone, and hopefully no one got scammed by it.

Hopefully the MODS will remove all traces refering to that link, and replies to it.

Video quality is not a priority with Karaoke, sound quallity is.  Video just needs to be legible.

you're full of it. Video needs to be EVERY bit as good. If you start getting the confetti graphics on cd+g files, they can interfere if the software doesn't do a clean swipe. Some manufacturers don't.

What you end up getting is the same error on every screen. Mulitply that by other errors, and soon, your graphics will become VERY illegible.

Screens shoud be flawless, for they reflect on your business. If you have a crappy screen, guess what, I'll think your show is crappy... or at least I start to think that way.
