Have you considered telling people that have colds or have just told you how sick they are, not to sing?

Times i've had to work sick before as well.
I wish people WOULDN'T sing when they are knowingly sick, but unless they are one of the stupid ones that say at the begining of the song, (cough, cough, i'm sick - forgive the performance), what are you going to do? Just keep sanitizing wipes on hand!

Man, I hardly ever get sick...But when I do, I treat me like a baby and spoil me real good....I stay home and curl up with treats and good movies and throw the phone out of reach....There ain't no way I would go out and try to sing.

Alcohol wipes if someone is sick. Won't hurt the mics either.

I never considered telling someone they couldn't sing if they were sick.
I do wipe my mic down though if I know someone is.

DITTO. I sanatize to the best of my ability before each show. And if someone comes up hacking up a lung from being ill, I will sanatize the mic after they are done.
I also have a container with the hand sanitizer wipes, so if somene wants to use them, they can. A few have.
And my biggest protection.... I have a mic for myself, and only myself. No one else is allowed to use it. So if I am sick, or the singer is sick, no cross contamation.
Had someone hack a bit of lung butter on a speaker. He was ill, but I still made hime clean it.

for years i've used clorox wipes. I wipe down thru the night. I've never had anyone offended by it either. They know i'm doing it for THEIR health too.

Everybody in my karaoke group seemed to be passing the flu back and forth. I finally gave up and asked the KJ if I could bring my own mic. She said yes and she also set aside a mic for herself. We both got over whatever the junk was that we were all passing back and forth. The others kept getting sick for what seemed forever. We finally agreed that it had to be coming form the mic. At least that's what we think.

Theres really no way to guard against sick germs since so many are air borne or transferred via hand to eyes/nose etc.
You would have to wipe down your mic after every use with clorox or have your singers scrub down before each song. Also most viruses etc are transferred during the dormant stage.
Mic condoms work well.

Gene Kelly had a temperature of 104 while filming the memorable "Singing in the Rain" sequence for the movie of the same name.

I wouldn't ever tell someone not to sing on my system because they were sick. I wipe it down like a lot of the others do. When I'm sick I try to get someone to cover for me or I do the best I can not to breath on other people. That may not work but it helps my self respect.
If I'm sick I will do anything can to keep it to myself.

There ya go, all my mics have windscreens on them, not only for germs, but for the 'I like to eat the mic, cos I don't know better' singer. Kinda hard to get that big puffy windscreen into your mouth. But then again, if some gal happens.....on never mind, I'm just being silly.

Problem is, even in food service, employer's often pressure employee's to work when they're sick regardless of whether or not what they are sick from is highly contagious or not. It's wrong, but in retail, school, and numerous jobs, bosses make it very difficult for certain employee's to get a sick day.. Since there's obviously no law against hacking all over money, shaking hands after coughing into your hand, and infecting a whole crowded and over-heated bar with bronchitis, bar's will continue to be breeding grounds for respiratory infections. and other types of viruses. I've mentioned that my experience with Karaoke is essentially 4 nights a week for around two years, in a studio room at a lounge with a CAVS JB-199 (or 99) not sure, big juke box type system... I'd bring tapes, and try to learn how to sing, and find what area of singing is possible for me... There were times I'd be in that room, and a couple of kids would be hacking all over the damn microphone with a cough that sounded as if they had whooping cough, a horrible hack where one or two would double over...It disgusted me that people damn well knowing how sick they were would willingly expose a large building of 200-800 people forced close together in hot humid conditions to something that is either bronchitis, pneumonia, or some nasty respiratory infection... Considering the noses were watering, and they were all congested this wasn't two with the same smokers hack, or asthma...
Maybe there should be a law against going into a crowded area knowingly and infecting a bunch of people...seems everything else has some law..... There are times when it's obvious a person should not be in public crowded areas...
JMO
Only time I recall health laws being enforced was when I was younger in elementary school, and again in Jr High... I got Impetigo about three times....School nurse sent me right home... That is supposedly very infectious, and a health violation to expose others too...Yet isn't a respiratory infection and other flu's ?

I will wipe of the singers mics a few times per night with alchohol wipes for what it's worth. I usually pull the windscreen off when singing if one's on.

I'd rather sing without a 'mic condom' - the foam pull over wind screens. These things get NASTY throughout a night. People singing into them, sometimes women getting the mic so close it gets lipstick on it, people cough into it - the germs staay right there with that nice moist 'mic condom'. For those that sing with places that use them, feel the top of them one time - it may change how you view them.
