Steppenwolf's "Magic Carpet Ride" is like that...a 90-some measure music break in the middle of it...it ended up being 3-4 minutes...

Can you imagine...a full-length track (11 minutes, I think) of In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida?  With the drum solo?

I dance during the instrumental parts!     Of course, that wouldn't work on EVERY song.  I heard a guy sing "Come Sail Away" once at a karaoke place, and the instrumental break on that (something like 66 measures, I think) would be hard to dance to!  (IIRC, the guy just went back and talked to the kj during that part, then went back onstage when it was time to sing.)

I usually tke the instrumental part to wet my throat if it is tight. What I hate the most is the songs that have the long endings and sad to say I usually get asked to sing Be Good To Yourself by Journey, I'll be alright without you by Journey or even the dance by Garth Brooks and I basically hand the mike back to the host after the vocals were done. I've also been asked to do Hotel california by the Eagles which is one I hesitate on as it is not really one of my fav eagles songs to do- I'd rather do Desperado or Take It Easy.

You know what?  I remember seeing a live video of "I'll Be Alright Without You" (I think this was the video that was shown on MTV) and Steve Perry sang "doo-doot doooooo-doo-doo..." along with the guitar solo.  You could do that.

My thought is, if you are getting treated badly is it possible you don't sing as well as you think you do? I mean seriously we watch American Idol and see it happening as they narrow down the list. Some people hear themselves differently than everyone else does. There were several regulars where I used to go that sounded awful. People were still nice to them though, because THEY were nice. I dunno seems you need to rethink your social ettiquette if people are being nasty to you....and yeah don't dis Gordon! If someone does a good job singing that song you don't notice it's a long one at all.

In my opinion (always offered but never humble) the idea of trying to bring the show down is pretty rude.  After all, the idea is for people to have fun.  Making it not fun for everybody just because you are upset with the KJ penalizes people who aren't at fault.  So my suggestion is that if you feel you need to do something, figure out something that will only affect the KJ.

It would never occur to me to complain to the KJ.  Ever.  It's his show and he should be able to run it the way he wants.  If crowd reaction is good, so be it.  If crowd reaction is bad or he has trouble getting jobs, that should be some indication to him that something needs to be fixed.  

I've been playing and singing in live bands for nearly 40 years and I'm somewhat new to the karaoke scene.  But I'm so tired of people telling me what I should be doing that I can't bring myself to do that to someone else.  Quite a bit of the time the people who say "You are so good I can't believe that you are playing a place like this and that you're not a big star" are the same people who feel compelled to tell me what I'm doing wrong.  The fact is that there are reasons I'm not a big star.  I am aware of them and I know why those people are wrong.  It's not entirely their fault that they don't know what they are talking about.  So I also figure they are full of it when they tell me about the things I donig wrong.

And about Gordon Lightfoot.  I've been a huge fan of his since he first started out.  He is one of my musical heros and one of the best songwriters I've ever heard.  And, come to think of it, I was a professional folk singer for around 25 years so that genre is near and dear to my heart as well.  For those of you who don't like Gordon or folk music I'll just say this; as a proud American I will defend your right to think and say pretty near anything you want.  But I won't sit down and have a drink with you and  I won't invite you over to my house.

Because my duo does classic rock & roll from the 50s to the 80s when I go out to sing karaoke I often look for something else to sing.  Generally I sing country because it's the only chance I get.  For some reason it seems that very little folk music finds it's way to cdg so that's usually not an option—with the exception of John Denver's "Country Roads".  But whatever I sing I try to be aware of my surroundings and if it seems to be a 100% rock & roll crowd that's what I sing.  But most nights it seems like there is a pretty good mix and that just about any genre is acceptable and appreciated.

I have to agree with the person who questioned whether the lack of applause you received was due to the fact that you were unknown to the crowd or because your performance was, in their opinion, lacking something.

In the relatively short time I've been doing karaoke I've been really lucky.  I have rarely sang when the KJ didn't ask me to sing some more or in many cases request specific songs.  I've always received applause.  Believe me, I'm don't have a super star quality voice.  I do (for the most part) sing on-key and with feeling, I only sing songs that I know well and that I know I can handle, and I try to make my song selection fit in with what's going on.  KJs seem to appreciate that and the fact that I am unfailingly friendly and courteous (a couple of things our society seems to be in short supply of).  Maybe that's why I've had such a good time.

If I ever hear Edmund Fitzgerald sung where I go, I will stop and listen. It is one of my favorite songs of all times.

I have had a kj treat me poorly once. I was at a club singing but could not hear myself very well. As it got later I had more and more trouble until I heard nothing but the music track. All through the night I asked the kj several times if there was a place I should stand to hear myself better. All he could say was that he heard me fine. No matter how much I tried to work this out he refused to work with me.

I didn't finish my last song. I had to leave. I didn't want to leave because I wanted to sing and this was the only club my uncle and cousin were willing to go to on that night.

I felt that I was staying within the guidelines of the golden rule and could do no more without just being a total (@$%&#!). It could be that they didn't want me to sing certain songs. If that's the case tell me. I will sing what they want no problem.

Visibility was poor that night and not knowing my way around meant that I was stuck there. The kj was pretty busy chatting up customers to ever come back to the stagge to adjust my vocals or to even point to where I could stand to hear myself.

Maybe the fact that I was visiting from Texas and was singing in front of a large group of Detroit auto workers was the problem.

I still wouldn't sabatoge a  show.

Hehe my 10 year old has been learning to play guitar (slowly cause his dad doesn't have loads of patience to teach him) and bless his little heart that was the first song he learned the chords for. I personally think it's a wonderful song and not "torture material" as has been suggested... obviously I am not the only one

Now I'm interested!  I do my karaoke in Austin. Which show does this pertain to? The small rotation and computer machines sounds like a friend of mine but I would be real interested to know what show and where and what night. Don't worry, I'm not going to jump you on this. I've been dissed at karaoke before and I know where you coming from. There's a lot of bastards doing KJ work.

I've seen a few people like that in Austin. It's actually funny because even though people say "Oh my God!" and such they love to have someone to complain about so it actually works in the bars favor. They probably go home and tell everyone they know about the poor girl so it probably gives them something to talk about in their otherwise boring lives.
