Neither of these come with a monitor speaker & I would just get a small powered speaker for that - run off of an Aux output from the mixer.

Apprx. how many watts should the monitor be?

Also, you may want to check out Fender 1270P Powered Stage Monitor. It's the one I use, puts out 100 watts and very small and portable. It puts out great sound and it's powered.

Thanks Eben. I was just looking at your site, and I noticed it says that you use "Shure SM-58 like microphones x 3". Does that mean that you use Shure, or just mics that are comparable and at a lower cost? Any suggestions on great yet inexpensive cordless mics to start off with? That's a huge complaint around this area that I've heard from other karaokers, that a lot of the KJ's either don't have cordless mics, or they only have one mic.

for years I got away with two corded mikes or two wireless or one wireless and one corded.   Enjoyed the setup with one of each type when a male female duet happened as I always handed the wireless to the female and remarked that the male always got the leash.

Amanda, that speaker would work fine as a monitor, but you'll need to get power to it, which may end up costing you more than a simple powered speaker.

I, too, am in the market for a small-venue system, and I've already started my 'wish list' of pieces to buy.  So far, my total for the system itself (not counting the CDGs) is around $2500.

Another thought in the powered mixer department is the box-style mixer-amplifiers, like this one:

I worked with quite a few karaoke companies that started with something like this.  And sometimes the bigger musical outlets have great prices on packaged deals, as mentioned in the posts above.

And finally, if your budget is tight, remember that you don't have to have a monitor right at first.  Buy it later down the road, as your venues get bigger!  :)

It would work, however you will need a separate amp.

Yeah, it's Shure clone I picked up on ebay but I tell ya, they sound just as good as Shure at 1/3 the price. There is no reason to use expensive mics when they can be damaged. They sound just as good and is cheap, gets my vote. I already had it dropped a couple of times but they survived so far. I bought 5 of them so I can just replace them on the fly.

They are available here. Just check out model ES-58. I got the one with switch on the mic, they hae two versions, and it works great.
