I always use music while calling up the next singer.  Just loud enough to hear but soft enough to be able to talk over.  Never a full song, it starts when the singer leaves the stage - if it's a long outro song I just let that continue, I call next singer, they get up on stage, fill music fades out their song starts.  
Most of our singers rather like it because I use songs that are in the book most of the time & not often done & it reminds them - OH YEAH or I forgot about that song!  Then they try that song.  It IN NO WAY takes away time from the singers AT ALL!  I just can't stand dead air of any kind - no matter how little & it keeps a flow going.

If I do a private party I'll use filler music until they come to the stage. I find when I do it in the bar they start singing along and want the song to play out. I just don't have time for it. Sometimes it causes the problem of people who don't sing wanting me to play songs like a dj. It is a karaoke bar - big time. If they want a dj they'll have to go somewhere else.

Never had that problem, like I said the transition music doesn't get up to regular volume, just an underlying volume while I call next singer & make bar announcements.  Very rare occasions I will get the "let it play" & I tell them, write it up & sing it - half the time, they do just that or will find someone that will!

I'm not saying its wrong to use filler music - it is just wrong for my bar.

Absolutely! What works in one bar won't work in another. Lonnie's right, though, in that the background music shouldn't be light, unless you're making a statement with the music. Sometimes to mix it up, I've been known to bring up a country song when a headbanger just played, or the opposite. Sometimes a comedy sketch, othertimes soft music... anything to change the pace. But never so loud as to be the same volume of the karaoke music.

Another thing is no matter how you do it, you are training your regulars. Once they learn your system, it won't be a thing!

I'm not talking about interlude (traveling) music.     I'm talking about the people that play a set of regular music.    3-5 songs.   After every rotaion.   Or sooner.    I just heard about a KJ that has a record contract.   He absolutely will not start no matter what time it is until he has 5 singers.     If he's 1 1/2 hours before they get 5 ... oh well he waits.     No wonder the bar will be out of business by next year.    It happens to be a bar I quit because of a threatening customer.   The one that pulled a gun on someone a few months after I quit.     I don't play anything but the song that is being sung.    My next in line already has a mike in hand before the other song is half over.    The song starts to fade out I say that was so & so.   They start clapping and the next song starts.    Bang, bang, bang.   I use 3 cordless mikes so if there is a duet the next singer still has a mike in hand.   Calling people up after a song ends just wastes singing time.   Less talk more music.

not being a K J, i have a different point of view, i like it relaxed, i hateeee haveing to run to the stage with the song already going, my voice is cold already then to rush it to?  i understand ur point, but each person wants to do his best and being behind the 8 ball before u even get there makes it worse, i like the low music in the background,  when i'm rushed like that i feel the K J must be getting paid per singer....i mean if some lady steps in front of u while ur heading up,  u can't just knock her out of the way so u don't miss the beginning of the song....i have seen it that rushed before, if i get up and the songs already started and i'm late on the words knowing i did my best to get there i'll ask him to start over, r i'll walk off...if i walk off, just think he just saved over 3 min. time....l...

i think a K J is there to please the people, make them happy, i'm betting not 1 person would complain with 5 to 10 sec of free time to spare to get focused,  at the end of the night u only lost what? 1 to 2 min.?
