Hello,

I think I might have damaged my throat or something while I was kind of yelling to reach the higher notes. Right now, it's a bit hard to swallow water and I have a little bit of pain right below the little bump on my throat. Do I need to go see a doctor or is this okay to leave it alone?

Thanks.

You must have blown out a tonsil.    Just one of the very unfortunate injuries associated with this business.    It's not all fun and games.

Like your handle says.....?   Many a damn good KJ has gone down in history.    It's not all glory.    A few have struggled and sacrificed, paving the way for many.    SHHHH.... Listen carefully you can hear the bagpipes playing in the background.    It will be pretty painless, things will start getting dark, you will begin to shiver, you will begin to see the light.   When it reaches maximun brightness and you hear the choir singing "Amazing Grace", its time to let yourself go and let the angels take you out of this world.   KJ heaven is a really nice place.   They have every song, in your key.   The rotation is fair.    You are always up next, no waiting.    You always sound perfect.    No slips to fill out.   Every song you sing "gets the crowd going".    You are sooo lucky to be going there sooo young.   If I could I would gladly take your place.    Turn in a slip for me and tell them I'm on my way, I'll be there in a few years.

Are you sure the bump in your throat didnt used to be a bump in your pants? maybe you screamed so hard you relocated something trying to hit that high note?

They used to remove boy's lil bumps to enable them to hit all those high notes.

Just a thought :)

Could be a vocal nodule or a polyp.  If you can truly feel a "bump" in your throat, you should go see an ENT or a trained Speech Pathologist and ask to have videoendoscopy of your vocal folds.

Neither is a good thing to have, but a nodule can go away if you practice vocal rest and a good vocal hygiene plan.  A polyp could result if you continue to abuse it ... and that would require surgical removal.  Good Luck, pants!

Kappy posted a really good post on Vocal health in the Singer's forum.
You might want to look at that.

The boys are just teasing you. I would go to a doctor if it doesn't get better in a few days.

Shame on you boys - Karaoke Heaven LMAO

I agree with Babs........ SHAME on you boys for picking on someone asking a serious question.

Mr. Pants.... I dunno what to tell ya..... but like Babs said, give it a couple days, if it doesn't clear up, maybe go get it checked. I incure all kinds of throat issues, I can't tolerate smoke, I sing too much/too loudly/too often.... And I usually self medicate too. (honey in warm water works wonders..... so does olive oil..... but that can be icky to gargle & drink) Good luck to ya.

And since we have so many dang doctors in the house, dishing out free sarcastic advice, I have a little problem too, maybe you can help ME out?

Thing is, I think I may need a new butt. I was  checking mine out the other day, and I realized I have a crack in it.    :D

can i add a bit of seriousnrss to this thread?   ok, you're right.  probably not, but here goes the effort anyway

vocal cords are actually thin membranes that vibrate causing the noise that comes out of your mouth.  it's called your voice.  the lower you try to sing the slower and farther these membranes move.  the higher you sing, the faster they move.  think of taking a piece of paper and blowing on the side of it.  as it vibrates it creates noise.  the faster the airflow, the higher the pitch.  your membranes are much more delicate though and it you strain or sing too loud or too high, the membranes can tear  causing pain and difficulty talking.  fortunately, the membranes heal themselves fairly quickly.  just take some time and rest your throat.  it may seem like an old wives tale, but lemon honey will help soothe your throat.
