First a comment... man, some of the songs mentioned in the thread are scary to sing.
Jane - Starship. That's glass shattering high
Alot of Boston Songs are way high/hard too
How about Donny Iris - Leah-- yikes.
Anyway, I'd self-rate myself a 6 or 7 overall.
Vocal talent- 5-6
Stage Pres./Energy - 8
But-- I've gotten comments from total strangers like-- great singing, I'm in pain from hearing you sing that high (usually after I do "Have a Drink on Me- AC/DC"), "You're scary, you sing with such abandon."
I also get a good share of high-fives and applause from strangers (family and friends just think I'm nuts..
So what does that all mean? Dunno, have fun, do ok and people enjoy it. That's why I karaoke-- Plus there's the rush of doing it live in front of a crowd.
My subs aren't that good a measure since I pretty much goofed them up ... think its me not knowing recording/mixing from shinola.
But what does that really mean anyway? Our frames of reference are prolly way different. There's general public 1-10 (bad to good). Then there's probably Karaoke bar 1-10 ... :D
1 = can't carry a tune in a paper bag or stay on key and doesn't know words when they're right in front of them (spewing on stage, falling down drunk, etc. are all in the < 0 category)
5 = carry a tune, stay on key, sing the right words.
9-10 = can be a pro-- as good or better (e.g. you made it your own song) than original
