Wait a minute, maybe I won't shut up....

Milo and Billy can't be ranked on the same scale as "Joe average Karaoke hack", it's not possible.  You two are 8's on a bad day... averaging closer to 9 compared to most in Singers Showcase,  there are a couple among you that are really talented,  and such ability should be ranked on a competitive scale of Pro-amateur talent level vocalists... Not we hacks....

OK, Badsinger, make room, I'm going back and revising my score !!

Another scale is the Badsinger category. there I am the KING LMAO

Here's a question. When you rate yourself is it how you perceive yourself
or how you think others do?

Its how I see myself. there are people out there who say nice words but don't really mean it. There are those who say nice words about the singing (and mean it) but don't know what  good singing is all about.

not at all....you are a pro singer....it shows....your experience and raw talent shows through on everything you sing....i'm not even a wannabee pro singer....to even get a song to sound half way decent i have to work hard on it, songs rarely come easy to me....i'm just pleased when i do well on the occasional one....

For knowledge of lyrics, I'd give myself a 10... :whistle:  (that memory bank of mine LOL)

As a singer though, somewhere around 5-6...better on some songs

Oh Jean,  this is bull dinky.. LOL

You were one of the few 10's in SS.....  Let anyone listen to your rendition of "Heaven", and NOONE will think you are less than a 9, or are just a wannabe... that's not realistic.. Your score over in SS compared to those in SS is pretty realistic... Yet granted, on a scale of industry pro's, things would be tougher... Yet you'd still rank up there with them, Billy too even tho he's kinky...

I rank myself based on what I think of myself...

There's a lot of fluff in SS and the scores I get from competitions are too varied...

Lyric's I'd give myself a "1", or "near braindead".. It took me two week's to memorize "Behind blue Eyes", and even today I strain something trying to recall them.  70's took it's toll in some respects  :(

Today's a good day, I just got a vision,  first two words in "Amanda" by Boston

Babe, Tomorrow's...(pretty good eh?, I like this song alot too)

I used to like playing Elton John stuff on the piano alot, yet some of his lyrics were tough to recall, and after "your song", I just never cared to memorize the lyrics of some of his bizarre stuff, like "Philadelphia freedom" and "Don't let your son go down on me".

bull dinky?    :shock:    did you come up with that or is that the work of the censors here?  bull dinky, i like that..... LMAO

awwww 'heaven' was just a fluke....let me send you the 'blues' song i attempted tonight, i think i missed my calling   :no:

nahhhhhh, i'm serious steven....there are a few songs i'm pretty well pleased with, but i'm not at all consistent with turning out great songs IMO....buttttt on the other hand i do value your opinion very much so what do i know?  we have talked before about singing in a club and i think i would do well in that kind of enviroment butttt i'd have to get down and serious about it and do some majorly serious work on my singing first...the main thing i lack is confidence and that prevents me from really 'letting loose'.....

billy kinky?  nahhhhhh i'm sure i don't know what you mean    :whistle:

*getting out thesaurus to find words that mean serious.....unless you just wanna go ahead and clue me innnnn  ;)

Jeanne, NOONE has the ability to sing EVERY SINGLE style of music they like and produce a "9" in ALL genre's of music from Broadway musical's to Blues Ballad's to Opera, etc..... There's ALOT of different styles and vocalists out there, if nothing else, we are limited by our God given range... A talented Soprano for instance couldn't easily sing stuff that sounds good in the low Alto range, assuming she's expecting to emulate the original creator....

My biggest problem with my subs is catching the cues in the music to start singing.  I can't record and show the lyrics...

It's funny how when you're recording a sub, even with the lyrics right in front of you, cerebral flatulence can make you forget a song you've heard a couple hundred times easy.  When I subbed "Promises", I KEPT messing it up and re-recording.

9 = near perfection
8 = very good
7 = good
6 = above average
5 = average performance

Isn't this absurd ?   Can someone please tell me what sense having "above Average" is when the next rank up is just a nebulous word like "Good" ?   What the heck does "Good" mean ?  Sorry, I don't know what "Good" means when compared with Above average. This is a bizarre why to calibrate... I could understand having

5-average
6-above average (which IS good)
7-very good (which of course is "good" too)
8-skilled performance entering professional sounding (this of course is "good" too)
9-Excellent/ Polished and near perfect   (this is good too of course)
10-I can't conceive of this being performed better.   (which is good)

Currently Singer's Showcase ranks on a 10 scale go something like this

8+++
9
9
9
9
10
10
10
10
10

Clear voice, good phrasing, strong prescence. Limited range. Creative style, unusual interpretation. Best when song calls for a bit of a jagged, rough, unpolished style--particularly blues and swing songs. Get many compliments at karaoke bars from people I've never met.

I'd rate my voice somewhere around an 8. Within the confines of the music styles I sing. I'll never try Sinatra or R & B song that require a smooth, polished voice.

But in terms of blues or swing tunes, I beleive I sound as good, if not better than many of the singers I hear on blues and swing CD's. So I'd say my singing is competitive with many blues/swing singers that are on published recordings.

You guys have heard my subs. What do you think? And do you think I should pursue putting a blues/swing band together. Particulary since Ive had ZERO experience in the context of joining/running/leading a band. Cant even read music. Plus I'm 47 and it's kinda late to learn how to do all those things.

Next question do you think I should try publishing my original lyric sets that I  sub on SS at  BMI/ASCAP? As to the writing I think its as creative and competitive with any other thats out there.

Be BRUTAL!!

HAMMER AWAY!!

But SPARE the "DONT QUIT YOUR DAY JOB" line----I already KNOW THAT!!  LOL

Maybe that's how Weird Al Yankovic and Cledus T. Judd come up with their stuff LOL

I've only noticed the tendedncy to space out on the words while I'm recording...half the time, when I'm singing live, if it's a song I know, my eyes are closed, and I'm just singing from memory.
