Please curtail superfluous dilatory.
(If you understand this without resorting to a dictionary, or asking your mother, you're old enough to partake)
not to mention there's already a thread about nothing in here ! I'd hate to be redundant

Being that dilatory is an adjective, I have no clue what you are saying.
Am I missing something obvious?

Not at all twansenne, Kudo's in fact, I made a mistake, and you caught it ! I thought dilatory was a synonym for obscurant diatribe. In fact I was meaning that sentence in a sarcastic context, but you caught it, excellent ! and thanks ! I tripped myself this time. Even when I joke around like this, I like to learn things.
Last year I pulled this same type thing in a different online area, and Jdmeister corrected me ... I used incorrect word form in that particular case. Yet the truth is I do try to expand my vocabulary, (even using terms and form correctly). I just checked a dictionary, and I did screw up.

Along these lines, It seems that over the past 40 years certain rules of sentence structure and grammar have slowly become more lax. Less formal. When I took English, you never could start a sentence with a conjunction such as "and'. An English teacher told me that today, there ARE cases where it is in fact allowable to begin a sentence with words such as "That", or "and". Properly spoken english today tends to sound prudish, people don't seem to adhere to the old school of proper composition.. How many people will walk over to a stack of book's and ask..
"Are these, they ?". Yet that's correct
So much for guileful farcicle feigning of superlatives for perfidious pseudo-pedantry.
Maybe I should switch to math ?

I thought a dilatory was something you used to get rid of unwanted body hair!
No, wait. I'm thinking of a depilatory.
Never mind.

Does anyone remember the episode of friends when Joey wrote a letter for MOnica and Chandler to the adoption agency.
This is my version of something like this. The first part is the original letter, the second is after using the thesaurus and reference in Word to try and make it sound smarter. Enjoy!!!
Greetings Mother and Father,
I am having so much fun at engineer camp. We had to find the right angle of the swimming pool prior to swimming.
I look forward to returning home in the very near future.
I love you,
Your poor poor child,
Sharon

If you think recalling spelling, and correct usage of basic principles such as homonyms gets tough now at times, wait another 15 years. Punctuation, apostrophe use, and alot of this stuff becomes near impossible. Regardless of how frequently we write, or use these basic principles, sentence structure, and grammar isn't easy to retain for some odd reason... It's amazing how much younger kid's seem to retain of this stuff...(Either that or it's amazing how the memory goes, but I prefer to not look at this in those terms.. ). The longer we're out've school, the tougher this stuff gets. It's strange too, I write ALOT more now-adays than I ever did in High School, I couldn't care less about this stuff in school, yet in High School I remembered how to spell and I retained word definitions, etc. Kid's minds are in most cases well-tuned mechanisms. I suppose there is a much greater propensity for teenage kid's minds to retain what's absorbed, yet seemed after 30 for me, I started to forget alot of both math and verbal concepts I'd once learned...I almost never bother with spellcheck, and it's scary how I find myself making the same mistakes over and over.

With the advent of computers and cellphones, you would think we'd be moving ahead, academically. But with text messaging and emails. it's amazing how fast we're moving backwards. I get so agravated when I see messages like this:
"hi, how r u doing. im looking forward 2 c-ing u again. i hope 2 c u 2 nite. ttyl."
I see that all the time (including on this board). I guess we are so lazy that we can't take the extra 10 seconds it takes to spell out a word anymore. But I'm afraid that it will become common practice, and we'll become a nation of illiterates. Or maybe I'm just over reacting.

Quote: But I'm afraid that it will become common practice, and we'll become a nation of illiterates. Or maybe I'm just over reacting.
As to the "over reacting", I think it depends Roy. Fear of us becoming a nation of lazy illiterates certainly would be a founded concern. Calculator's to do math, word processing to compose our essay's, even computer's to tune and perfect our music... Assuming a person isn't provided with a basic foundation and principles your concern isn't overreacting.
Yet some that are very talented, and extremely intelligent just hate typing. Don't type well, or even have the time to concern themselves with sentence structure. Many opt to use a type of shorthand and say what they have to say however they choose to say it, and while there was a time that I might've assumed this was usually sophomorish years back, In "internet chat speak" it's often shorthand for some that can't be bothered with formalities of composition, and haven't taken the time to really sit down and type at a rate as fast as some of us, to do-so is quite time consuming !! Not all that chat in these rooms are author's or editor's, and writers... Some wish to exchange knowledge, yet don't have years of english comp, or have forgotten alot of it...yet for the most part, many just don't care...They get their message out as simply as possible, in their own signature style I suppose... Presentation while important to some, isn't as important as content to other's... They just do their thing, and underneath the "abbreviated" post is a brilliant, and talented person that just can't be bothered with worrying about formalities or presentation. Only reason I'm saying this is that many of my closest friends type using a shorthand... What's important to me, isn't important to others...To me what's most important is the person behind the type, not the presentation... While a post such as this took me literally under a minute to type, it's also about 12 years of practice typing, and awareness of presentation, yet it's MY choice... I don't expect others to share my values.... There are some great people that hate to type, can't type well, still do the two finger typing, yet love to socialize none-the-less... Who they are, isn't their quick post style in here...
Now if these were 11th grade kids writing an english thesis, or philosophy paper, yeah I'd freak !
I like to know who's behind the content, initially presentation is never an indication, while I thought this at one time, on the internet, it just isn't the case. Given a sample of 100 adults, we'll notice 100 different presentation styles. Yet ALOT of the time, the one that present's themselves the best in type, is nowhere near the brightest of the bunch... The brightest might very well be a math wizard that loaths typing, and doesn't have the time to learn 13 wpm... One never knows..
I grew up with parents overly concerned with pedantry, all I kept hearing is, "People that don't know you do in fact judge you by your presentation", now while this became a source of great anguish, and I couldn't stand hearing it...In SOME cases it was true, so those that don't know me in here, perceive me as a "pseudo-erudite redundant bloviated blathering jackass without a life" yet I present it well ~~~

Mine did that too sometimes. I just ignored it at first because I figured it was some sort've tantrum to get attention ! I never succumbed to that stuff. I let my head know who wears the pants around here early on. Transcend your head and detach, set it free ! Yet sometimes this can be a headgame, especially if your head is humming and it won't go because you don't know, the piper's calling you to join him.
