My wife is a nurse in a care center here in Portland and they are dealing with the virus you are talking about in the other rest homes in the area. It appears that the virus is being transmitted via the ambulance drivers from infected patients.

The care center she works at is now placing all new admits into a 5 day quarantine in a remote room in the center away from the general population. If they are known to be positive for the virus they are re-assigned to the hospital they were transported from to prevent spread of the virus to their patients.

Aparently this is a nasty virus....So far no infections on new admits

I think the center you are referring to is in Beaverton.

Steve you make some very valid points, and I can't disagree with anything you said in your last post. The bird flu could easily mutate into a strain that wolud easily be caught, and spread by humans, (though it hasn't happened yet, thank God) and I don't mean to minimize that risk. People can and do die every year form the flu viruses that are going around now. My only point was that, like HIV, salmonella, and ebola, the vast majority of people are unaffected and remain healthy. I don't mean to minimize the seriousnes of any of these maladies, but I don't think it's the end the human race, or even of karaoke as we know it.

Man has been around for a long time and I don't forsee any of these things killing off "half the population" as BigDog put it. I could be wrong, but I hope I'm not!

Just my opinion. Feel free to disagree. I'm sure badsinger will! :)

You bet

I'm just glad we know about it now and the potential threat it causes.
At least we can be prepared for it. Look at how many deseases have hit us
and we didn't even know they were coming.

I always wondered about aids and mosquitos. I don't think a mosquito can carry enough of the virus to infect a human. I do know that their is a small percentage of people who get aids and they have no idea how. Their are children in the record books who of course have not had sex yet, they haven't been exposed to a person who has had it and has not had a blood transfusion.

You know what's strange about this Type A flu (H5N1)..  One of the dangers is hemorrhage. I didn't see any analogies being made to Dengue Fever, which was also considered Hemorrhagic fever (I think).  Dengue fever was transmitted via air from mouse feces.  I saw no mention of rodents transmitting Type A virus..  I wonder if Dengue Fever was Type A, or similar ?   It hit quickly, and killed quickly.. BadSinger, you know if Dengue is similar ?  That also hit asia LONG ago...

The only reason it is not a pandemic, is because the health authority in those countries that get affected, take GREAT precautionary measure to contained the spread.

It just take One dead bird in a farm, ( my country) and any farms within 2km radius will be quarantined. If the result is positive ALL domestic birds will be kill within the 2km radius. You can see those guys with guns and those crazy suit every where. Road block maned by armed police. It is no joke. My State is still free from the virus.

only thing I know is if I think I've got the Bird Flu, I'll probably have an undesirable urge to sh*t on someone's windshield!

Badsinger is right on this one.  This avian flu strain is much more virulent than the Type A influenzas
that we are accustomed too.  Our immune systems would have very little experience dealing with
this variant.  Plus influenza viruses in general can live on inanimate objects for many hours
making it easier to pass on.  The Ebola virus and the HIV virus can not live long outside of the host.
Ebola runs it's course so quickly, killing it's host in the majority of cases, so it dies off fairly quickly its self.  If the infected
population can be quarantined, the spread can be stopped.  Right now, the destruction of
the bird population within a 2km. region of infected birds is the best course of action to help prevent further spread.
Anti-viral medications may help a bit, but we need a prompt and all out effort to get a vaccine going and in
mass production.  Hopefully the strain will not continue to mutate and evade a vaccine.

If this is the strain I'm thinking of it's not severe at all. Doc gave me pills for it, but
the urge passed (after the first few times I tried flapping my limb only to fall out've the tree with my pants around my ankles) even without taking the pills. It wasn't hitting the windshield I was really fixated on however when I was cra**ing. It was saving the binoculars from breaking during the fall.  Different strokes I suppose. Some call it a sickness, I called it a social life !

It's the Swine flu that's dangerous !  I was passing thru Kentucky when I had that

Do a little more research.    The regular flu kills thousands a year in our country, mostly old and very young.   My ex-wifes dad died in the last flu epidemic in the 70-80's.   He was 45.   All I said was if it gets to the everybody's getting infected stage nobody will be at karaoke spitting on the microphones.

Personally the disease I worry about most of all, that claims loads of lives, and has been a threat for a long time isn't a virus of this sort as we know it, it's cancer.  This is of utmost concern to me.  It claims MANY of our family members, and is an imminent threat at some point to MANY of us !  That's the disease that freaks me out !
