YES!
(While I realize the law may differ in other states, in Cali you can be ANY AGE and enter a bar SO LONG as it has an adjoining restaraunt and they have the proper papers.)
Most of the karaoke business in my town comes from 'lil kiddies just like me who love to sing and so a lot of the restaurants around here realize that and make karaoke available to the younger crowd. Not that it's gonna matter much longer to me cuz 21 is only 3 mos. away!!

You know, when I used to live in Marysville, and Loma Rica, we would hang out at this little place....... I don't recall the name of it. It was a little Mom n' Pop place.... I'm sure that place has greatly changed since I lived there..... but it was right at the bottom of the bridge when you went from Marysville over into Linda.... on the right, right before PV Ranch & Home. Anyhow, I was 18-19, and it was a tiny bar that also had a small dining area- and we would go in there and play pool and listen to the jukebox. IN the bar. There wasn't even a cut off time to get out, we'd be there some nights until pretty late. I forgot how Cali was like that, until I read your post. But we could- hang out in a bar/restauraunt...... just couldn't order drinks. (we kept our own in the truck bed outside, ) :D

Wow, kids and teens can go into the bar area and sing and hangout? There's seldom any problems with this? That's great if it works.

So what is the legal drinking age in Alberta? Can you describe your favorite
hangout up there Crystal?

As a KJ that follows a VERY strict rotation..here's what I do. If the song is a TRUE duet and not just a sing-a-long with so and so, I will allow up to 2 times per rotation. Let's say Trish has a song in and Trish and Mary have a song in. I will allow the duet to go under Mary's name while still keeping a spot for Trish. And again, that is only if it is a true duet. If they just want to sing "Friends In Low Places" together...it counts as both singers turns.

here in Alberta it's 18
I think it's 19 everywhere else.
My favorite hangout? It's a pub/pizza place called Rosario's (I tried to find the website, but it's not workin)
They have pool tournaments and stuff there regularily, so half of the place is filled with about 15-20 pool tables and the other half is tables n booths and a HUGE projection screen for karaoke... The crowd USED to be a little older.... 30-somethings, but they got a new DJ so now it's quickly becoming a college age crowd (which kind of sucks.... cuz those are usually the stupid drunk people that annoy me) The DJ is pretty decent .... though not as good as the old one...and the song selection is definately better than most places. The thing I like most about it is that you can sing any style and it doesn't matter. I've been to some bars where everyone sings one type of music and if you don't sing that music, you're ignored. There's a pic of me singin' at Rosario's in my album
what I HAFTA do is find out where the old DJ went and go THERE!

It's a matter of remebering faces and names. If the three girls put up songs together with me and when I called the first 1 up the three showed up to sing then the other 2 would be put at the back of the rotation and all their slips would be piled together so the three would come up only once in a rotation. So trick me and I'll trick ya back LOL

Sounds like everybody's kept happy at ypur hangout. That's good, as long as the noise from the pool players and other talkers doesn't bug the singers too much.
The bar section of the Denny's in Canby really isn't big enough and if you're not into karaoke, you're gonna get pretty bored. There's friendly people and some pretty good singers though. :)
I like nights when there's a variety of song styles going on. I don't want to hear all rock, country, hip-hop or whatever. So to you, the song selections and KJ is more important than the place its self (assuming the place isn't a complete dump)? LOL

I usually switch up the rotation a bit here and there to get a good mix going. And I'm usually to loud to be bothered by talkers and pool players.

depending on how slow the night is I'll allow this but after the second song, i'll assume the other two are going to come up and place that slip near the end of the rotation. When asked I'll tell them that normally I only allow one song per singer and when you all come up that counts as your turn. It's going to get harder for me to police this once I go to kiosks as each singer can slip more than one name without me realizing it.

I understand both arguments. I hate seing the same people over again and I don't want people thinking I'm playing favorites but when I'm at a bar as a singer with some friends who are to scared to sing by themselves, they ask me to help them. Well don't want to tell them no but I also want to sing the songs I want to sing.

when I went on vacation we stopped in at a karaoke bar. The KJ
had an older couple there in their 80s. They must have been regulars.
It was a small bar with very little singers. he would let the older couple sing 2 songs in a row. At first it didn't bother me. I figured they were old and it was hard for them to get up and down a lot. And that they would leave early. Wrong - by the end of the night the old couple were singing 4 and5 songs in a row while everyone else got one song. Talk about annoying. We left.
