Hello, I am thinking of getting a decent microphone for home use.  Not professional recording, I just want to record myself singing on my PC.

After reading a bit around the net, I've narrowed to three main choices.
The tried and tested (it seems) Shure SM-58
The Sennheiser 835
The Electrovoice N/D767a

I am currently leaning on the Electrovoice based on what I've read, but having done a search here, I haven't seen it mentioned much here. The Sennheiser 835 is the cheapest, and if I wanted to be fair, I would mention the 845 with the others. But I haven't seen the later mentioned as much online, so I don't know how they are.
The Electrovoice and the Shure are roughly the same price. Is one better than the other?
I am also open to other suggestions in that price range, keeping in mind I live in the UK and may not have access to every brand out there. I would like to keep the cost in this although I admit I have been looking at the Beta-58 too.

I have been using Samson R21 mics for a few months now.  Only $49 for 3 of them in a carry case and they sound excellent on my system.

I only use the Shure SM58,  had 3 of them running 7 nights for nearly 14 years.  They've been dropped, thrown, swung, tapped, the paint is worn off yet they still sound as good as they day they were opened.  I replace the mic ball every few months & that's about it!

I use the same 3 on one of my systems, and love em.  Cheap price, sturdy, and sound good.

Unless you are a POWER singer, I would not recomend the sure SM58 for recording, but that is just my opion.

Yeah, I work in a rowdy place, and they have been put to the test for sure.  One of them has a little ding on the top of the ball...bout it.

I love Sennheiser 835's I feel they have a much better frequency response than a Shure 58. The Impedance is also less creating a higher output.

Senneheiser 835 Frequency Response 40 - 16,000 Hz Nominal Impedance 350 Ohms

Shure SM 58 Frequencey Response 50 - 15,000 Hz Nominal Impedance 400 Ohms

I love Shure don't get me wrong I own a Handful of SM 57's, SM 58's and Also Wireless 58's, I just think the Sennheiser is a better microphone.

The Shure SM58 is a tried and tested standard. The only thing I would add is that all microphones sound just a little differant and offer something unique about each brand and model number.  Depending on your voice and your musical tastes what sounds GREAT to one type of singer might not be for you.

Go to a local store if possible and take your favorite CDG and test out the three mics you mentioned and maybe 1 or two others.  If you stay to the $100 range you should be able to find the PERFECT mic for YOU.

Thanks. The Shure SM-58 seems to be the most tried and tested indeed.

But a few people have commented that though they are good, they are mostly still used today because they are near indestructible. This is not a big concern for me.

The EV have got good user review here, although fewer people have had experience with them (but most of them claim to have had experience witht he SM-58):

Lastly though I know a beatboxing site may not be the de-facto place to look for mic reviews if you are not going to be beatboxing, the review here (http://www.humanbeatbox.com/forum/showt ... hp?t=17222) suggest that the EV may be better for singing.

Thats why I curious to see if there are any opinions of the EV here - it looks like it is not as tried and tested as the Shure though

I currently use wirless Shure 87A's, hoiwever when I first started I went with the corded Shure 58A Beta.  Better sounding than the SM58 and no mic switch to worry about.  You control that with your mixer.

The EV's are good mics sound wise, not very durable though - at least the couple our band owned.  One was dropped once, the other took 3 drops & they were both dead.

I'm surprized you haven't looked into Audix they make one of the best dynamic touring mics, the OM7 has one of the highest gain before feed back and they have a $45.00 "fix everything wrong with the mic" policy that is awsome, so even after warranty runs out it only cost you $45 to have a good as new mic.
Rat Sound has a great price on blemished mics or if you want one that has a flawless finish thier price is still better than any I have found elswhere.
