I recently purchased a SoundTech S20 PA system . i was looking at the instruction manual and it says...... Microphone Input (XLR, Balanced) it says all microphone inputs have a phantom power of +15V for condens or microphones. Therefore, do not connect any unbalanced dynamic mic as they may be damaged
S20 AMPLIFIER
output power................80 watts RMS at 4 Ohms
frequency range...........20-20Khz
THD.............................0.2%
S.N Ratio......................51 dB
Master EQ:
Low..............................k15db/80hz
Middle..........................k15db/800hz
high.............................k15db/12khz
Inputs:
2 x mic........................4.5mV/2Kohm
2 x line........................20mV/200K ohm
1 x tape in....................200mV/100K ohm
S20 SPEAKERS
description: full range 2-way
componentry: woofer: wf-302P a-sts
tweeter: kp-306
Power Rating: 80w rms
160w max
Frequency Response: 60Hz- 20Khz
According to all the specifications listed here, i was wondering what are some good choices for a corded microphone that you could recommend to go good with this system. thanks

there are tons of choices on microphones. If you can answer the questions below we could narrow it down to a few good choices:
1. Are you going to want more than 1 or 2 mics on your initial purchase?
2. Wired or Wireless?
3. How much are you willing to spend for the above?
If you want an excellent quality microphone for for home or professional use I would suggest Shure SM58 wired mic, about $99ea and then you will need an XLR 25ft cord, about $25ea. You can certainly purchase cheaper microphones, but if quality of vocals are your goal eventually you will be upgrading down the road. If you can afford Shure's quality now I would suggest you buy the SM58 first.
Another wired mic I like is the Audix OM1 or OM2 as they are virtually bulletproof and they have a great vocal sound as well.

Agree with the Shure SM58 for quality & reliability - these are my first choice. The Sennheiser 835 aren't bad either.

my system came with a soundtech mic, but the cord is only like 6 ft. long, and also would like something better, i initially had a radio shack mic but it does not have an xlr cord. i do not plan on using wireless. I definitely want quality mics for vocals. i just want to make sure the mic is also compatible with the specifications of my pa system because its not a high powered system like kj's would use, it's only 160 watt max system. thanks

The Shure is fine for your system. As long as it has XLR connectors.

Soundtech you mind as well go buy a $20 Radio Shack Mic.
J/K...
The Shure 58 is the most common used.
I personally Like The Sennheiser 835.

If you want to save a bit of $ on Shure, check this site out on ebay
ES-58
I own 4 of the mic and it sounds just as good as SM-58 not according to me but a couple of professional musicians who heard it. They cost a lot less as well. One model of the ES-58 has on/off switch on it, which I believe SM-58 does not. I am happy with it and if someone drops one and damages it, no big deal, I get another one at half the price of SM-58.

One thing I have found is that people can say anything they want on ebay and many folks will believe them until they actually get the product in their hands and then they know the real truth.
On ebay you don't always get what you paid for even if you think you are buying shure brand. There are alot of knockoffs out there.
My suggestion is to buy Shure locally from a reputable dealer or one of the online sponsors of this site.
By the way....Sennhieser is an excellent product as well. I have used their wireless units before and they make a great product.

now now liquiddye,
what's wrong with a soundtech system?lol, i'm on a budget here, and was lucky to get that with hubby griping at me! He says Karaoke is a waste. Of course i would love to have an expensive professional system, but i have to admit my little SoundTech S20 sounds much better than my memorex from wal-mart!

I noticed the comment about the SoundTech system too!
I'm on a budget too and I'm glad that family and friends will be able to do karaoke.

this soundtech system is way better than what I had when I purchased my first home karaoke system.
It was a Aiwa NSXV51G which was a 40watt bookshelf system that they made (2yrs only)that was specifically built for karaoke. It had a 10 step key changer, 2 mic inputs, mic volume and echo controls, 3 disc changer, dual tape deck w/record function and 2 speakers. I literally wore that system out with my friends. I still use it for listening to FM radio and cassettes in my garage. I thought it kicked a** until I purchased my professional system. Then I could never go back.
His soundtech system is just right for his budget. Everyone has to start somewhere and this is a great start.
Be sure to give us some feedback once you get it set up and running!

Flipper, guest what?
I have that same Aiwa unit I assume.
My Granny bought it from Rich's years ago.
We used it to play CDs.
I noticed it had the word karaoke on it years ago.
I never did use the karaoke function.
The unit was an ok cd player.
One of the speaker outputs in the back has stopped working.
It's used now for camoflauge (SP?) on a shelf.

I put a J/K Just Kidding.
Just pulling your chain. Actully the new SoundTech stuff is not so bad. As far as powered mixers go I'd take a Soundtech over a Behringer or Alesis.

Dont worry about the kids using it this mic is the workhorse of the industry. They can take quite a beating. you can allways replace the wind screen ball if it gets dented.
Why not let the kids sound as good as they can sound even at that young age. If they use a cheap mic and the sound isnt that great it may discourage them.
Enough of my Dr Phil Approach.
Just my 3 cents

hi flipper,
I absolutely love my Soundtech Pa system! I have the system set up in my upstairs bonus room (1100 sq. ft.) for now i have the memorex hooked into it, i should be getting my new player tomorrow. For the price i paid, (under $400.00 including new karaoke player) i am very satisfied. This type of setup is definitely the way to go instead of buying one of the all in one units, imo, and i could always sell it on ebay and update my system in the future, but just starting out this system really rocks for me! I have not noticed any distortion or feedback from these speakers, they are nice sounding and plenty loud enough for me! i am so glad i found this forum after sending the all in one vocopro unit back. I really appreciate all the suggestions and help from everyone!

Mr.October,
well they must be some tough mics then, but my 3 year old,Emma likes to slobber all over the mics though, . I might ought to wait until she gets a little bit older.
