I like the dachsunds..  I came very close to getting one.. They come in three variety's I think.... Don't they come in three sizes ?  Standard down to Toy ??  Problem is I tried to pick one up a few times, and the thing would yelp.. Poor thing has a vulnerable back...I suppose it makes sense.... Yet the owner would yelp eve louder....  YOU'RE HURTING MY MITZI'S SPINE   :(

Felt I needed to take a special course just to learn how to pick those dogs up...They are adorable however... I really do like that breed,  I was thinking of Dachsy, or Pug....  <<<SNIPPED>>>

Yeah they come in 3 sizes...
Full
Tweeny
Mini

The tweeny (between) is a cross between mini & full

The back on a dachund is vulknerable, buy usualy only at OLDER age, or if the dog is overweight.

Don't nee a special course on how to piuck em up, they are TOUGH!!!!  THe breed was used to hunt badgers and other ground animals, so if they can handle a badger, I don't the you could hurt them too bad.  Just cary them like a baby, but on their belly (support the length of the dog).

The only problem I have found, like I said b4, they have NO FEAR.  ALso, they take a bit longer to potty train than most other dogs.  Other than that, they are a wonderful breed, this is the 2nd one I have had.  THe other was when I was kid.

Several years back a friend of mine who lives in the country was cutting down a tree and when it fell he found a dead mother coon and a baby male so young that it had just started walking.  So,... the wife and I took him in.  Named him Lil' Chief (of course)  Bought a portable dog cage big enough for a great dane and that was his home at night.  He ate just about anything.  Would sometimes sleep in the bed along side our female Min Pin.  They would wrestle like to kids.

Lil' Chief would get up with me in the morning and climb in the shower with me.  He would stand there under the spray washing himself.  He loved playing with polished stones and Fisher Price toys.  He had one that had buttons on it that made sounds like a car starting; horn honking, etc.  That lasted until he decided it was more fun to play with it at 3 in the morning.  He would sit like a human on the couch and eat out of a ceral box like a kid.  Once in awhile he didn't like going back in his cage and he would for sure let you know.  We had him about two years.  He had never been out side.  He bolted out the door one day when some freinds came over.  We couldn't find him.  6 am the next morning we heard a gun shot.  He had went two doors down to an elderly ladies house who had 5 cocker spaniels.  Lil' Chief decided that night to make the dogs sleep outside of their dog house.  The lady got up the next morning saw him in the dog house and didn't know what to do; so she shot him with a 22.  She didn't know he was a pet.  She felt bad; we felt awful. End of story.

Kelly,

How horrible :(   I don't know if I'd ever be able to forgive the person despite the fact she didn't know she killed a domestic pet.  Some things are just too painful. Sorry !   That's awful  :(  Tragic story.  Pet's do get loose,  Who can blame them ?
That's what Racoons do.  They are curious by nature.  VERY smart animals, and to keep one in around the mating season must be VERY VERY tough.. From what I've heard the males especially have a REALLY strong mating need...

All the lady knew is that for some reason her dogs slept outside their doghouse the whole night.  You would have thought she could have at least called the animal patrol officer rather killing him.  He wasn't do anything damaging.  Yes it hurt. probably more so than any dog I have ever lost.  The lady still feels bad about it to this day.  I just feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to live with an animal that most people only see lying dead along the road.

On another note.  Once long ago I had the opportunity to eat some barbequed coon.  It was propably some of the best wild meat I have ever tasted.  Of course now I would look at it as though you were offering me cat or dog.  Never again.

I can understand that Kelly.  After having birds eating poultry lost it's appeal to me.

People who've had pet skunks love them too.  In Jr High a bus driver had a pet skunk, and everyday the skunk drove to and from school with him..REMARKABLY docile animal. Had no fear of people,  even a bus full of crazy kids.

Dr. D.  are you in a surrounding area of NO ?  An area that wasn't severely affected by the last storm ?  I'm just thinking that having to evacuate with even two dogs could've been really tough !  Hope you didn't need to.

I live in a surburb of new orleans, about 15 miles outside the city on the west side. We did have to Evacuate, and were not allowed to return for almost a month. When we did return last December, it was like a third world country. No place to buy gas, no food, water and services was limited. It is a lot better now. MRE's wernt actually all that bad.

I had pet raccoons growing up also. We lived next to a ranger station. Starved Rock in Illinois, it is a beautiful place. We would get them as babies, usually stranded by the mothers. We kept them all outside except for one. I loved playing with them in the wade pool when I was little. I remember one destroying my brothers sterio speakers. Their claws are sharp. The last one we had ran away after a big storm. I
begged my parents for another one, but mom had had enough of coons.

I felt horrible when I heard yours was shot. We had one accidently hang himself, he fell out of the tree house on a leash. I cried for days.

MY daughter is VERY good with animals, of any kind. Every since she was very small, she's wanted all these little creatures around us. But she always babies the heck out of them. She got a chick once from a school project they had done (when it was over, the teacher let Cheyenne have the chick to bring home)... and this thing was unlike any chicken I had ever seen. It followed her everywhere, perched on her shoulder, it would curl up and sleep on her belly in the yard. It was comical. But...... off track here..... my point was- for the year and 1/2 or so we had that chicken, and the multiple others she bought at the farm store to raise...... she would NOT touch chicken meat. She thought it was cruel to eat it.  LOL

Quite a few years ago, my father in law had one. He knew had to de-scent them, and when he found a baby one alone, he took it home and did that....... and it ended up being part of the family to his cats. Very cute little thing, it was really tame. But.... it was ODD seeing a skunk stroll across the yard, and the kids playing with it and petting it.  When I was a youngun, skunk meant.............. RUN!!  LOL

Dear Dogs & Cats,

The dishes with the paw print are yours and contain your food. The
other dishes are mine and contain my food. Please note, placing a paw
print in the middle of my plate and food does not stake a claim for it
becoming your food and dish, nor do I find that aesthetically pleasing
in the slightest.

The stairway was not designed by NASCAR and is not a racetrack.
Beating me to the bottom is not the object. Tripping me doesn't help
because I fall faster than you can run.

I cannot buy anything bigger than a king sized bed. I am very sorry
about this. Do not think I will continue sleeping on the couch to
ensure your comfort. Dogs and cats can actually curl up in a ball when
they sleep. It is not necessary to sleep perpendicular to each other
stretched out to the fullest extent possible. I also know that sticking
tails straight out and having tongues hanging out the other end to
maximize space is nothing but sarcasm.

For the last time, there is not a secret exit from the bathroom. If by
some miracle I beat you there and manage to get the door shut, it is
not necessary to claw, whine, meow, try to turn the knob or get your paw
under the edge and try to pull the door open. I must exit through the
same door I entered. Also, I have been using the bathroom for years
-canine or feline attendance is not mandatory.

The proper order is kiss me, then go smell the other dog or cat's rear
end. I cannot stress this enough!

To pacify you, my dear pets, I have posted the following message on our
front door:

Rules for Non-Pet Owners Who Visit and Like to Complain About Our Pets

1. They live here. You don't.

2. If you don't want their hair on your clothes, stay off the
furniture. (That's why they call it "fur"niture.)

3. I like my pets a lot better than I like most people.

4. To you, it's an animal. To me, he/she is an adopted son/daughter who
is short, hairy, walks on all fours and doesn't speak clearly. Dogs and
cats are better than kids... they eat less, don't ask for money all the
time, are easier to train, usually come when called, never drive your
car, don't hang out with drug-using friends, don't smoke or drink,
don't worry about having to buy the latest fashions, don't wear your
clothes, and don't need a gazillion dollars for college - and if they get
pregnant, you can sell the children.

I wonder what my towns ordinance is regarding Pot Bellied pigs as pets.  I didn't realize a person can't just go out, and get a pet pig in many locations.  Your town must allow such pets.

Haha, Steven, I live in a little ol' hicktown....... I could probably take my little piggy "to market" with me and nobody would bat an eye.  LOL

Pigs are not allowed in Hurst TX....That's where I live...The dispute over the pig got so heated that it actully went to the polls...I personally voted FOR the pig to stay but he didn't win and was exiled out of the city...Poor thing....

Steven,

Absolutely love your letter and posting on your front door!!  However, our puppies seem to be attached to us with an invisible string so we have no time alone and haven't closed the bathroom door in the master bedroom since I don't know when (our previous set of puppies and our current set feel that is the best time to be spoken to and get a quick rub  LOL )

Re: the posting on your front door - when Richard and I had our "rehearsal dinner" (another term for "everyone come on over, we want to spend as much time together while we're in the same town as possible") we made sure everyone knew we had two dogs (our first set) and they would be in the house as well.... Nope, not willing to banish our puppies to the backyard or garage... Now, however, with the grandchildren we've had to (looooooong story) which means we don't have the grandchildren over as much as we would like... :(

Susie :)

My friend had two cats, names My Cat and My Other Cat.  One night we were sitting in his living room when one the two was scooting it's but across the floor the jumping up really high with a mew of death.  After watching this (and laughing our arses off) for about five minutes, my friend picked up the cat to check it out.
Apparently it had eaten a rubber band and had only passed just enough to kinda hang out.  So when he scooted his butt across the floor and relax his butt muscles, the rubber band snapped back, hence the meow of death!!!

Incidently this thread also includes Tropical Fish.   Do the companies Metaframe, and Pilot still exist making tanks ?  or are they long gone ?  Is Supreme still around ?
