I miss my dog.  A blue-merle collie...Pepper.  She'd be 20 this year.  She was a goofy, silly, fun, smart dog.

The funny thing was, I wasn't that interested in getting a dog...my younger brother and sister were the ones pushing for a dog.  I was 14, and had other things catching my interest.

But when Pepper came home, I was the first one in the family that she really warmed up to.  She was the "family" dog...but we had a bond.

I just took an unwanted parakeet around 1995 on a whim..  I never had a bird, and my first thoughts were,  what the hell do you do with one of these stupid things besides clean it, feed it...etc.. I'd promised myself after experiencing the pain of alot of pet loss earlier on in life, NEVER AGAIN.  It was just too agonizing for me...

What I didn't know about birds, I'd never have learned if I didn't take this one.. What an amazing smart little thing...and for an animal that doesn't have understandable facial features, I saw emotion, and bonding from this animal, that I've not seen from many dogs...but training took ALOT of time and perseverance. She came when I called her by name, even from across the condo in a different room,  I'd just call her without even whistling and she'd land on my shoulder and start pecking at my cheek... She didn't even need to be caged... She earned her freedom, didn't mess up the condo, and stayed between her cage where she ate, (and used the bathroom..hehehe), and her hanging birdhouse where she slept at night. and would start dive-bombing everyone right at 8:30 PM either when they were in HER space, or if she wanted someone to be quiet and turn the lights out so she could crawl into her birdhouse and sleep...12 hours later around 8:30 AM,  If I wasn't awake the chirping would slowly start, and escalate to tantrums if I didn't respond..  What I learned is that when you get a pet bird, especially when you allow them to live at a higher elevation than you... Is that their leadership abilities kick in...  The people owners become part of their "innate" flock instinct... In the mornings they start calling for you, to make sure you weren
t snagged by a predator... It's a morning ritual among birds... In the wild they have a role call to make sure their friends and relatives haven't been taken by predatory animals... If a bird calls for you in the morning, and you don't acknowledge it, they get scared and upset...This one would start throwing tantrums,  she knew I slept in the bedroom, and didn't want her disturbing me in there, so she'd start staring into the room from a picture on an outside wall, and talking,  -she'd raise the chirp to more audible sounds after about 10 minutes,  than faithfully, she'd start chewing and peeling wooden frames....and SHE knew that was a no-no, (and fortuneately never went to work on any of the costly wooden instruments, yet I expected it, and was willing to accept it, it's just what birds do).... In time regardless of rules, she'd fly into the bedroom and land on my face....obnoxious as hell, she'd first start circling my head... It
s funny, but you really get used to certain things with pets...Her presence was known, she made certain of that !

You can also teach a small bird alot of tricks.. With Millet spray she'd "roll over"....Just amazingly smart little animals....and do they get jealous, WOW...  I told the story here someplace of how she'd bully female visitors that were in the living room....she'd get between me, and whomever I was talking to.  and start grabbing my lip with her beak...  She wanted me to talk to her....Not another female....Funny thing is, she wasn't jealous of male friends, she didn't like females....

Anyway,  I had her for 6 years,,, She started laying heavy clutches, several eggs a month for years..  I think that did her in early,  very stressful for a hen to lay heavy clutches.... Yet she was an amazing pet....and an animal that was unwanted, and ignored the first few months of her life by her initial owners...I'm glad I took her...

A few years later I adopted a cockatiel,  I friend had a 3 year old ignored bird, and she was relocating to teach in San Diego...This bird never really adapted to me...Never really warmed up, and the screech drove me nuts....she was VERY loud and raspy sounding... I lost the Budgie in 2001, the Tiel in 2003... I felt bad that I never was able to get as close with the Tiel because she just wasn't an animal that was easy to bond with...It's ashame when people get pets (like birds) and leave them to themselves for 18 hours a day..... Never paying attention to them.

OOhhh yeah -
I love my cats - I have 2 hairless Sphynx. Kibby and Salem are my
exotic babies. They are dogs in cat bodies. This breed is nothing like what you think a cat is. They are in the window right now sun bathing. Maybe they think they're people.

My mom had a parakeet when we were little. It's name was tooter....

An amazing and funny little bird.  It used to do a cat call when my mom would walk in the room.  My mom had a special wistle to call the dodg and the bird learned that whistle as well.  The bird would call the dog and the dog would go nuts trying to figure out who was calling him...LOL...It was so funny, I swear I saw that bird laughing in his cage........ LMAO

Got 2 cats, and 2 dogs.  The newest one is a tweeny-daschund.  He really thinks he is a BIG DOG, tried going after a rot one day while on a walk.  He has absoutly NO FEAR!

Its sleep most of the day; its very active at nite.
And it sleep almost any where, tho it has a huge cage by the coner of the living room.
Its more of a cat, rather than a dog, it hiss rather than meow, and have long sharp retractable claws.
Eat mostly fruits, banana and papaya and some meat.
The only track it can do it that it can walk on wire and a very good jumper.

I like the dachsunds..  I came very close to getting one.. They come in three variety's I think.... Don't they come in three sizes ?  Standard down to Toy ??  Problem is I tried to pick one up a few times, and the thing would yelp.. Poor thing has a vulnerable back...I suppose it makes sense.... Yet the owner would yelp eve louder....  YOU'RE HURTING MY MITZI'S SPINE   :(

Felt I needed to take a special course just to learn how to pick those dogs up...They are adorable however... I really do like that breed,  I was thinking of Dachsy, or Pug....  Bab's those Canadian Hairless Sphinx kitties are adorable... I wonder if if anyone ever bred such a species prior to their recognition as a species in 1986... I wonder how tough it was to push that breed into the "pedigree" category of Cat..LOL

I think parakeet's do have senses of humor Sharon..  I swear mine goofed on me quite a few times... I have studies stating many species of bird are as smart as the hominids.. "Bird Brain" is FAR from factual in the "slow" sense, Parrotlet's and Parrots are smart little critters,  They even pick their locks to the cage often-times.. LOL ... Eileen Pepperton's Parrot (AFrican Grey) at the University of NM animal behaviour lab is a fulltime study,  Go look up Dr Pepperton and Alex (the parrot), Alex has favorite TV show's and pull's a chain at the same time daily to turn on his soap opera....He calls a banana "long yellow" and can apply reason to what we once believed might just be mimicry among birds..... Can place shaped and colored pieces in appropriate hole sizes and locations...etc.. Alex is very very smart...hehehe...

Jian,  I wonder why people in the states don't often have that pet.. I've never seen a civet at a petstore, of course that doesn't mean they don't exist in petstores.. My guess is that a few people MUST have a couple of those pet's around....Yet not sure how importation laws are...PRobably what the problem is....Laws... regarding that species to and from Asia..

Steven, I saved that civet from being eaten. I brought it back with the intention of giving it to the rehab center. It was then only a few months old. No one at the center know how to take care of it or have the experience. They ask me to care for it. It was never difficult cos I know the animal well.
This particular civet has no protection status and can be kept as pet without a licence. I know of on one that have this species as pet.
It is easy to house-train, and in a few weeks can recognised him name.

Jian,  You are the only person you know that has one as a domestic house pet ?  That's pretty interesting !

Good for you.... I'd be afraid to take such a risk !!  I'd figure if noone else has such a species as a house pet,  there's a reason for it.  Especially considering some of the crazy exotic species some of these people have.... I'd be afraid of returning home and finding the thing has eaten everything, or dug into the walls, floors.....and has converted a once comfortable room into sawdust of something.

Butterfly - no fair, your cheating. LMAO  Looks like your little cutie is going to be a rock star.

YIKES What's civet?

Kappy - sorry my babies aren't Canadian. Kibby's ancestors came from the United states and Salem has a Europian back ground.

I have 2 King Charles Cavilier Spaniels (M+F). Names Patches, and Rocky. Following the Hurricanes Katrina, and Rita. We wern't watching them too well. 2 Months later.........Surprise........5 pups. We sold 4 of them for $2000.00 each, and I kept the smartest of the litter. I swear, this critter (Shane) is 8 weeks old now, and he is smarter than his Momma, & Pop combined.

I didn't want pets at this point in my life, but they did me right....

You guys are making me want a puppy again. I don't have a dog. Well, my hubby has Banjo.... I named him, and he may as well be MY dog.... he likes me the best. But he's not mine.

I had a golden lab retriever for about 6 years, she was the best dog ever... loved kids, great family dog, but she wouldn't let ANY stranger come near me if I was with her. Very protective of me. She used to sit at the end of our driveway and wait for me to come home after work.

Then, we moved to a new house.... right ona rural highway..... and she got hit trying to cross the road to my brothers property. Guess I should have tied her, but she woulda been heart broken.... I never tied her up..... I think that's cruel.

And so far, I haven't allowed myself to get another pet.

Butterfly .... YOU are making me want another baby, hahaha.    Let's not go there though.... I don't have a willing father. I'll have to be content on waiting for my grandbaby to get here in July.

Cats.... I hate them. I have absolutely no use for the little hairball creatures, unless I have a mouse problem. I've just never liked them. I could never handle having one in my house. I know most women- and many men- oohhh and aahhhh over cats- but I literally hate them.   :puke:
