Karaoke Forums

For those of you that have a web site for your Karaoke business did you, or a friend design it or did you go through a web design company? Can you suggest a good web design company? thanks  

I got an HTML for dummies book (actual title Learn HTML in a weekend) & learned it from scratch - literally the bassics in a weekend, at least enough to get going - I am actually doing basic design sites for a couple businesses now as well.  Edit everything in Notepad - no Front Page type programs.  Design companies are expensive (sometimes worth it, but then you have to pay to have it maintained as well - for many companies anyway).  Learn how to do it yourself, it's cheaper & you can generally get good results.  There are also templates you can find - some for free, some cost money.  Learning yourself you can also manipulate these free templates to work for you as well.

I agree with Lonman.  Learn to do it yourself.  It may take awhile (it took me 3 months to build my site -- and I knew NOTHING!)  but it's worth it in the long run; you don't want to keep paying the web design co. each and everytime you want to change or add to your site...

There's many good resources online for learning to do web design.

Also you could find a company that hosts websites that also provides WYSIWYG design tools (FortuneCity is one, GODaddy another)

I was going to suggest a DIY as well.  But don't start from scratch.  Get a book to understand concepts, jargon, terms, etc if you need to- it would help of you're not familiar with how this stuff works at a high level.

Go with a hosted site --  GoDaddy, etc.  There's a gaggle (no not a google) of these.  8-)   Hosting is fairly cheap for a content-only type of site (e.g. not an ecommerce site)    $10 or less a month (according to godaddy-- I'm not pushing them just did a quick look-see).   Plus some of them will register your domain name for you as well-- also can be cheap.

Most popular hosting places have tools that can help you create your own site based off of templates you can modify.   They can also include things like photo albums, guest books, blogs etc.  

You could also look for a free-hosting.  e.g. say host your site on a blog site like blogger-- but that's a bit of a kludge.  You'd still want to register your own domain name.

Google hot dog  It is an editor that I have used for years.  For any html questions just google the term ,same for script (for example table)  Last week I upgraded my host provider and put another site I have had reg with Go Daddy for awhile but never parked it. I then moved my dot com tp another provider and then bult a phpbb2 forum Just now learning how to put mods and hacks in it.  So right now I have 2 web sites and 2 forums... One is bad enuff

Did my webpage with MS Frontpage...If you can use the other MS products you can use this...It's sooo darn easy...If you know someone who already knows how to build a page ask them to teach you the basics...For The rest you can use a good Dummies book and you'll be just fine....Once you have the base built then all you have to do is updates...

I started out with geocities, a free site from yahoo.

But I grew impatient with the limitations there... ended up transferring it to my own domain, found a great hosting company, and I've been doing the simple pages in html after converting the geocities one. Finally, I just do it on the fly on my domain's control panel...

My site was done by myself with a friend's help on some stuff, mostly for flash animation. I used Dreamweaver because that's the tool I used to create several web sites in the past.

However, you can use any tools to create a site. If you are user of a Mac, the new iWeb from iLife 06 is a great tool to use to create new web site without seeing a single line of HTML. You are limited to few pre set "themes" but you can get it up and running in a few minutes. I used iWeb for my personal site because it had an easy to use blog feature on it. I was too lazy to do it on Dreamweaver.

I checked out your site-=--  the Bump Me Up thingy is too funny.  What I didn't see was the -- "you're still not moving up" line  

yeah, that was being sent around on the karaoke forums a few years ago. I liked it so much I put it there! !

I use geocities free website as well...  Amazingly, you can put a lot of stuff on here and it's simple to use.  The problem with my free site is that every once in a while it goes over the Data Transfer Limit.  But hey, if my traffic increases I can upgrade to the geocities pay site for less than 10.00 a month and not have any other problems.  Just another Tax Deduction in the karaoke business.

A lot of your servers will offer free space to host a website. I
use Earthlink.  The program is Trellix site builder. It is so easy to
build your own site. I did it in one night. They make it really easy.
You can build your own or use their premade ones where you just
add in your your own stuff. I mainly just use mine to host pictures.

if you think that less than $10.00 a month is fine... then you should go ahead and get a domain and have it hosted!

I spend $40 a year on mine, with a $5 a year domain renewal. That's it.

For that, I get 500mb of storage, over 7GB of data transfer (and I use my site a lot for storing and transferring files such as .pdfs, my new forum, etc). You get unlimited email accounts, 1 free database, sub domains...

Yep, you can get a web site hosted for about $7 per month plus $7 per year on domain renewal anywhere. My account is a bit more extensive. I pay $20 per month for mine but for that I get:

3 domain names
45GB of space
10,000 email accounts
750GB of data transfer
20 SEQ databases
40 FTP accounts
15 sub domains
tons of extras like forums, shopping carts, CC processing, etc.

I have to pay $7 per year on domain name renewal but overall it's pretty cheap considering what I get. Using the account can't be easier. They have icon based installation web page that you use to add sub domains, install forums, see the stats, add features, etc.

Now days web site is a commodity and if you shop around, you can get some great bargains.

Interesting.  So how easy is it to build then?  I'm pretty ignorant when it comes to building webpages with anything but the Yahoo PageBuilder.  Time is also a factor, I need something quick and easy.  I'll check your site out later... (when I'm not at work, ...)

I used the yahoo pagebuilder at first too! All I did was edit the html (but not save it on pagebuilder), then pasted the html on the various pages... you'll have to edit out the yahoo specific codes, such as their "lines"...

I've put together a conglomeration of html codes, such as colors, etc.

I just shifted over to blue host  (google blue host) Its the best I have found yet for the price and tech support. Just built  a forum (phpbb2) in the same format as this one...

  With an editor like it an expansive programming knowledge is not needed. My sites are not for making money they are just something to keep this old man occupied for awhile...

Most of the hosting sites have GUI based web builders available. Or they will have some kind of extensions for popular web program software like Dreamweaver, GoLive etc. So, you don't even know how to use HTML to build web sites.

Bluehost looks very impressive, and I like the fact it's hosted in the states, rather than abroad. The sheer storage space alone looks fantastic.

One thing that's happened with the huge expansion in the web area is what was perfectly acceptable as a standard three years ago, it's just nothing now.

When I started with icdsoft.com, thiey only offered 333mb of space. But at the time, it worked for me, and the hosting solution was terrific, and I couldn't beat it.

Competition and cheap storage space has really changed the world. Now I personally don't see what you're using 10GB of space for... I have 500mb of space, and still only use 89 of it! !

But as with all things, if you build it for folks, they'll find a way to use it!
